PRP) to [regrow their hair](https://aedit.com/procedure/plateletrich-plasma-prp-for-hair-loss), [rejuvenate the skin](https://aedit.com/procedure/vampire-facelift), or help heal an injury about their results, and you'll almost always be greeted with a resounding, ‘It's a game-changer!’ The standard PRP method has been around for years across medical specialties and involves drawing a sample of blood and separating the plasma from the rest. Just like everything else in the world of aesthetics, there are always new advancements that make way for bigger and better treatments and results – and PRP is no exception. Enter: so-called ‘supercharged’ PRP. Here’s what you need to know.

## **PRP Basics**
PRP has gained a significant following in the last few years and quickly rose to aesthetic stardom. Initially, it was an adjunct for wound healing. But, once skin-rejuvenating vampire facials (i.e. [microneedling with PRP](https://aedit.com/procedure/microneedling-with-prp)) made their way into our living rooms — you can thank Kim Kardashian for that — and onto social media feeds, they started to be an in-demand, top-performer in doctor's offices from coast to coast. And then Kim’s sister Kourtney let us all in on her [PRP for hair loss treatments](https://aedit.com/aedition/kourtney-kardashian-prp-injections-to-treat-hair-loss) after a too taut ponytail caused a bald spot, officially mainstreaming one of PRP’s most effective use cases.  

Platelet-rich plasma is a blood plasma-based protein solution packed with platelets and some white blood cells and growth factors. Extracting the PRP from blood allows the growth factors to assist in healing and rejuvenating purposes. Originally, PRP was used in orthopedics to speed recovery from injuries and then made its way to skin and hair applications, says [Macrene Alexiades, MD](https://www.nyderm.org/), a board certified dermatologist in New York City. Now, almost every surgical and pain specialty utilizes PRP to help heal injuries (especially joint and spine), rejuvenate tissue, speed healing, and reduce surgical pain and scarring, notes [William Yates, MD](https://www.dryateshairscience.com/dr-yates-hair-transplant-surgeon-chicago), a board certified surgeon and hair restoration specialist in Chicago. 

In aesthetic medicine, its fandom stems from the fact that it offers non-surgical rejuvenation. “Minimally invasive PRP has become increasingly popular in recent years since it is a natural way of addressing signs of aging,” says [Samuel Lin, MD](https://www.linplasticsurgery.com/about/dr-samuel-lin/), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Boston. While fillers and neurotoxins are great (don't get us wrong, we love them), for those who aren’t too keen on the idea of injecting a foreign substance into their skin or are simply looking for additional options, PRP offers a natural alternative since it uses your own blood. Beyond the skin-boosting benefits, PRP injections are also a godsend for anyone [experiencing hair loss](https://aedit.com/procedure/nonsurgical-hair-restoration-solutions), thinning, and impeded growth. 

### **PRP Treatments**
Regardless of the treatment area, the basic principles of a PRP procedure are relatively the same from one to the next. First, blood is drawn from the patient's arm and put into a centrifuge where it spins out and separates the platelets from everything else in the blood. The centrifuge portion of the treatment is as significant as administering the solution itself because the concentration of platelets can vary greatly and impact efficacy (more on that in a minute).

For PRP to become activated and put healing into action, there must be an injury of some kind. For example, Dr. Yates explains that injecting PRP with a needle into the scalp puts the wheels in motion for the powerful growth factors to do their thing. The growth factors contained within the PRP are the secret sauce since the platelets quickly and effectively regenerate the skin and heal injured tissues. The platelets are a rich reservoir of growth factors that have many benefits, including combating hair loss, restoring the synovial fluid in the joints, and stimulating collagen in the skin, says [Michelle Henry, MD](https://www.skinaestheticsurgery.com/), a board certified dermatologist in NYC. “Traditional PRP is less concentrated than the supercharged version in terms of the platelets and, in theory, it has fewer growth factors,” she notes. 

## **All About Supercharged PRP**
Not all PRP is created equally. PRP versions vary based on the concentration of platelets within the solution, says [Miguel Mascaró, MD](https://www.instagram.com/drmascaro/), a double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Delray Beach, FL. “That means that in order to see an effect, there needs to be a concentration that is four times over baseline,” he explains. The potency obtained in standard centrifuge machines average a PRP solution with about five to six times platelet concentration. Its more powerful cousins — the so-called ‘supercharged’ versions of PRP — can feature 10 times the platelets or more. The more concentrated form of PRP provides additional benefits due to its higher levels of growth factors, which signal the body's cells to swarm to the area and speed up the healing process, says [Audrey Kunin, MD](https://www.instagram.com/draudreykunin/), a board certified dermatologist in Kansas City, MO. 

But it’s not just the processing that supercharges the PRP. It’s also what’s added into the solution. “Traditional PRP contains mainly platelets and plasma, with some residual white and red blood cells left over from the PRP preparation process,” Dr. Lin explains. “The ‘supercharged’ version of PRP – which may mean that the PRP has undergone more processing than traditional PRP to be more concentrated and contain less white and red blood cells – refers to the addition of stem cells, often taken from fat, to the PRP mixture.” As Dr. Alexiades shares, the fat is “mechanically broken down and the stromal cells are obtained and then mixed with the PRP for a highly concentrated mixture.”

Patients need not worry about how rich the platelet count is within the concentration — your provider will take care of that. Dr. Yates says there are hundreds of devices on the market that claim to deliver PRP. “The truth is that most only deliver PPP (platelet poor plasma) versus platelet rich plasma,” he cautions. “The difference is the concentration of platelets and other cells derived from the centrifuge — the system concentrates the platelets at least four to six times the normal blood count.” Systems that only concentrate one to two times the average blood count are less effective. “Plus, they don't deliver the same healing results, requiring more frequent treatments,” he adds.

### **Supercharged PRP Treatments**
To create a more potent version of PRP, a sample of blood is taken (just like in traditional treatments). “This blood is processed using a centrifuge to isolate the PRP, and, in the case of supercharged PRP, the PRP is processed further to concentrate it and remove any residual blood cells,” Dr. Lin explains. This is where the extras are mixed in. “Surgeons may add a patient's stem cells to the PRP,” he notes. Finally, the PRP is administered through targeted injections or topically as part of a microneedling session.
 
So, how are doctors going about pulling the most out of a single blood draw and putting it to good use? It all comes down to the technology used, of course. “There are currently two companies, [Regen®](https://www.regenlabusa.com/), which is my favorite, and [Eclipse®](https://www.eclipsemed.com/prp/) that have perfected their tubes that ‘pull out’ the PRP fraction and have demonstrated, through diligent science, that their PRP is very high quality,” Dr. Alexiades says. Because of the healing properties, some providers are using supercharged PRP for regenerative medicine, too. [Scientific data](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33525977/) shows a connection in animal studies between PRP and fat survival after [fat transfer](https://aedit.com/procedure/facial-fat-grafting).

## **Is More Powerful Always More Desirable?**
Before you cast aside traditional PRP procedures and disregard devices that have less power than their ‘supercharged’ counterparts, we’re here to tell you that all methods can be effective. It really comes down to what your doctor offers, the concerns at hand, and the inherent quality of the blood and its plasma. Dr. Mascaró, for example, prefers to use higher concentrations over baseline for most patients when doing hair restoration or anything that requires more cellular turnover and growth factors. “This may also be the case in laser resurfacing and during facial fat grafting and facelift surgery,” he says. But, during most microneedling sessions, he sticks with “more traditional PRP concentrations.” 

The science is still evolving on exactly what potency is best for what purposes. “There is ongoing research regarding the optimal concentration of PRP,” Dr. Lin shares. “For some musculoskeletal uses, a higher concentration of platelets in PRP is preferred and … in a study of 10 patients, supercharged PRP [shows](https://academic.oup.com/asj/article/40/4/NP177/5492510?login=true) to be effective for improving [male pattern baldness](https://aedit.com/aedition/common-causes-of-hair-loss-balding-thinning-in-men).” But, in other cases, lower platelet concentration may be effective enough.
 
For cosmetic applications — particularly hair growth — there may not be enough evidence to make everyone a ‘supercharged’ believer. Dr. Lin says that while there are few studies on supercharged PRP, its applications and benefits are likely similar to standard PRP. What's still up for debate is the longevity of the results and if a more potent concentration of PRP, plus the presence of fat-derived stem cells, leads to longer-lasting results. But it is something that many patients experience. ### **TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM**
One of the most common signs of stress-induced hair loss is telogen effluvium. As Friese describes, telogen effluvium is “when stress causes the roots of the hairs to be pushed prematurely into the resting state which is followed with the hair falling out.” This can happen in one specific area of the head or all over. “When this happens all over the scalp as opposed to in one area of the head, it is called diffuse hair loss,” she adds.

If the body experiences some sort of trauma or shock, as many as 70 percent of scalp hairs may shed — but the effect isn’t immediate, Friese shares. Instead, the loss usually manifests about two to three months after the ‘trauma’ occurs. “This sudden increase in hair loss, which people usually describe as ‘the hair coming out in clumps or handfuls,’ is acute telogen effluvium,” she explains. While the shedding can be dramatic, the thinning is usually temporary and hair should grow back once stress is under control.
 
### **ALOPECIA AREATA**
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that results in unpredictable, patchy hair loss on both the scalp and body. “This is when there are visible spots on the scalp that don’t have hair,” Friese says. “Some describe them as ‘crop circles.’” The hair loss, which is sudden, occurs when the immune system attacks the hair follicles. While research indicates the likelihood of a genetic predisposition for alopecia areata, it is believed that the hair loss can be brought on or worsened by stress.
 
Mild cases of alopecia areata often resolve without treatment within a few months to a year, though both immune-suppressing and topical hair growth medications may be prescribed.

### **TRICHOTILLOMANIA**
You may have joked that a difficult situation made you want to figuratively pull your hair out, but such events lead some to literally do so. “Trichotillomania is an irresistible urge to pull hair out from the scalp, eyebrows, or other areas of the body,” Friese says. While stress isn’t the only trigger of trichotillomania, it “can be a way that some people deal with stress, anxiety, tension, loneliness, boredom, frustration, and other negative feelings,” she adds.

Hair follicles damaged during the process of pulling the strands out may never regain full function, but some people experience little to no permanent hair loss or balding after they stop hair pulling.

### **SCALP PSORIASIS**
When you think of [psoriasis](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-live-with-and-treat-psoriasis), you probably think of the skin. Psoriasis is a chronic condition that causes patches of red, dry, flaky skin. So, why are we talking about it here? Psoriasis most commonly appears on the elbows, knees, lower back, and, yes, scalp. The causes and severity of psoriasis varies depending on the patient, but stress is known to trigger flare ups for many with the condition. 

Symptoms of psoriasis on the scalp can include itchy patches of fine scaling that looks like dandruff or thick, crusted plaques that cover the entire scalp. It can often be treated with over-the-counter and prescription topicals (think: medicated shampoos), light therapy, and/or oral medication. While scalp psoriasis does not directly cause hair loss, heavy scratching or brushing callously through the scaling can lead to damage and shedding. 

## **Other Ways Stress Impacts Hair**
Hair loss isn’t the only side effect of stress. During stressful times, “the body deprives the hair follicle of essential nutrients and hinders both cell production and healthy hair growth,” Reslan notes. As a result, chronic stress “eventually leads to weaker and thinning hair,” she says, and it can also cause other hair and scalp concerns: 

- **Itchy, Flakey Scalp**: Emotional stress can be behind an itchy, flaky scalp. Not to be confused with psoriasis, stress may lead to dandruff due to increased sebum (read: oil) production. “Dandruff, which is caused by an excess amount of oil on the scalp, can be a side effect of stress,” Friese says. - **Greasiness**: Speaking of oil production, “stress can cause an overproduction of sebum that may add to the oiliness of the scalp and hair,” Friese says. As a result, your locks may be greasier than normal during emotionally challenging times.
- **Gray Hair**: A [recent study](https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/how-stress-causes-gray-hair) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that stress leads to premature graying in mice, and the same may be true of humans. “It has also been discovered that, when a stressful event is over, the gray hairs may go back to their original color,” Friese adds.
- **Texture Changes**: While not as common, stress may also impact the texture of your tresses. “High levels of [cortisol] can, in some cases, cause changes in texture and appearance because it does affect follicle function,” Friese notes.

## **So, How Do You Treat Stressed Hair?**
Now that you understand the negative effect stress can have on the hair, it’s time to talk about what you can do to counteract it. Needless to say, reducing stress (we know, easier said than done) is perhaps the most important step you can take to restore your mane, but there are other remedies to help boost your blowout:

### **1. Determine the Cause** 
If you’re seeing a prolonged or really drastic change to your hair, don’t rely on Dr. Google — seek professional help. “The most important thing to do when excessive hair loss is present is to determine if an underlying cause for the problem is present,” Friese shares. For some, the shedding may be the result of a medication, illness (hi, COVID), or hormonal change (think: [postpartum](https://aedit.com/aedition/managing-treating-postpartum-hair-loss-thinning)). In such cases, Friese says, the condition tends to be temporary and does not require treatment. 

If the trigger is not clear, a professional will be able to take a closer look. “Blood tests may need to be done if the cause is not obvious,” she notes. It can show things like a mild vitamin or iron deficiency or an underlying condition that was not previously known.

### **2. Try a Topical**

We hate to break it to you, but patience will be required. “Stress-induced hair fall can occur anywhere from three to four months after the onset of a stressful period and can continue for a few months,” Relan noets. Once hair returns to its normal growth phase, you will notice new hair in about six months. All in, you are probably looking at upwards of a year for total restoration. “Shedding usually slowly decreases over several months (three to eight) once the cause for the hair loss is no longer present,” Friese says. “For example, it is believed that, if childbirth is the cause for the rapid hair loss, it usually returns by the child’s first birthday.”

Dealing with thinning hair and [hair loss](https://aedit.com/concern/hair-loss) can be a huge stressor for anyone, and pinpointing an exact cause can be tricky. Genetics are one thing, but studies have shown that there is a strong connection between [hair health and lifestyle choices](https://aedit.com/aedition/common-causes-of-hair-loss-thinning-shedding-in-women), especially when it comes to food. “Diet can absolutely impact hair growth,” says Denver-based nutritionist [Sydney Greene, MS, RDN](https://www.sydneygreenehealth.com/about). As she explains, hair health is dependent on adequate nutrient intake, particularly B vitamins, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and fat-soluble vitamins (think: A, D, and E). “If your diet is deficient in these nutrients, you will be susceptible to hair loss, limp hair or thinning,” Greene notes.

## **1. Reconsider Your Low-Fat Diet**
“Gone are the days of fat-free living,” declares Greene. If you’ve ever adopted the fat-adverse food trend, you may have noticed that your tresses took a turn. “Women on intensive low-fat diets can see their hair become brittle and lifeless, so forget about all the low-fat foods and seek out full, healthy fats instead,” recommends [Lars Skjoth](https://www.harklinikken.com/pages/about-us), founder and lead researcher at [Harklinikken](https://www.harklinikken.com/). It’s not just your strands that will enjoy the benefits. ”Your hair, your skin, and your overall health will thank you,” he says.

## **2. Evaluate Your Processed-Food Intake**
You knew this was coming. Greene is reluctant to label any good as “bad,” but she is quick to note that “consuming foods that lack nutrients — like highly processed snacks, high sugar foods, alcohol, empty carbohydrates — can take the place of nutrient-dense foods in a diet.” Those substitutions “will affect hair health,” she says. 

When working with clients, Greene works to shift their perspective of their evolving diet. Rather than “eliminating” anything, she focuses on “adding nourishing foods.” That mindset usually makes the transition easier. In fact, it might even occur without you noticing. “By adding in more plants, complete proteins, and healthy fats, less nutritious foods will likely be crowded out of someone’s diet,” she says, which is a win-win for the entire body.

## **3. Rapid Weight Loss Is Not Beneficial (for many reasons!)**
“Fad diets, crash diets, and substantial weight gain or loss usually result in some type of hair or scalp disorder and, sometimes, both,” warns David Adams, a New York City-based trichologist and co-founder of [FOURTEENJAY Salon](https://www.fourteenjay.com/). A key piece of the consultation process is evaluating what someone eats. “When I have a client with hair or scalp issues, one of the things we discuss is their diet,” he says. “Everyone says they have a healthy diet, so I ask them to keep a food diary for two weeks.” That journaling tends to turn up some unexpected results. “When we read the diary together, quite often, the first comment is, ‘Oh, my diet is not that great!’” he notes.

## **4. Embrace a Protein-Rich Diet**
Proteins are the “building blocks” of keratin, which support hair strength. “A protein-rich diet is so important to help grow strong hair,” Skjoth says. “Your hair loves nutrient-dense, unprocessed foods, like healthy fats found in avocados, fatty fish, nuts, and yogurt.” 

He recommends fatty fish, like wild-caught mackerel, herring, sardines, bluefish, and salmon, because “these fats heal and are great for your hair.” An added bonus? The omega-3 fatty acids found in seafood will also help give your hair megawatt shine, according to Greene, who tells her clients to eat fish at least twice a week. 

If fish isn’t your thing, Skjoth says to opt for lean, grass-fed meat, eggs, plain Greek yogurt, lentils, and beans instead. All of these foods will “arm your body with protein to promote strong and healthy hair,” he shares.

Equally important is ensuring your body is well-positioned to soak up all these nutrients from lean proteins and green leafy goodness. “In order to make sure you are properly absorbing vitamins A, E and D, it’s critical that you include healthy fats in your diet,” Greene explains. She likes to add a handful of nuts, seeds, or olives to meals, and she says to cook with olive oil when necessary. All of this works to support vitamin absorption.

## **5. Sugar Is a Protein Killer**
One more time for the cheap seats in the back: Hair is made of protein. Without it, you can kiss healthy hair goodbye. “[Sugar](https://aedit.com/aedition/the-impact-of-candy-sugar-sweets-on-teeth-and-skin) destroys protein and starch turns into sugar,” Adams cautions. If you ate well throughout the day, but ended the night with a piece of cake, you’ve essentially negated the protein you had earlier. “Hair is fed by the bloodstream,” he says, “so everything we consume ends up in our hair at some point.”

## **6. Drink Mineral Spring Water** 
Thanks to its high levels of natural, unprocessed essential trace minerals, “mineral-rich spring water is very valuable,” Skjoth says. But it should be noted that all mineral waters are not created equal. “Be selective and check for the source of the water,” he says. “Springs in France, Italy, and Iceland in particular have excellent mineral-rich springs. ## **7. Enjoy a Big Breakfast**
Eating more for breakfast and lunch and less for dinner (especially late-night snacking) is very important, according to Adams. “The later we eat, the harder it is for our body to digest the food properly,” he says. That means you could be missing out on some of the benefits of that hard work you’ve put into your diet. 

## **8. Prioritize Your Gut**

Basically, if you focus on optimizing your gut health, the rest of the body will likely follow. “Making sure you get enough fresh vegetables and fruit, incorporating antioxidant foods, and taking a daily probiotic will help keep a healthy gut,” she says. After all, there’s a reason doctors often refer to our gut as our ‘second brain.’

## **9. Supplements Are Not Silver Bullets**
If you find your diet is still lacking, popping a [hair supplement](https://aedit.com/aedition/hair-growth-supplements-for-hair-loss) may seem like a magic wand. But Skjoth reminds us that when something seems too good to be true, it probably is. “Taking a supplement can benefit overall health, including hair health,” he explains. “However, supplements will have little to no effect on hereditary thinning, which is the most common type of thinning women experience.” It’s vital to understand the root cause of your hair loss before self diagnosing and prescribing, which leads us to…

One way to get a sense of why you may be experiencing hair loss and thinning is with blood testing. “After a blood test, you will know the areas you are deficient in,” Adams says. ## **11. Cut Back on Alcohol**

On the flip side, it may also cause someone to make poor food choices, decreasing the overall, necessary nutrient intake to maintain healthy hair follicles required for growing thicker hair. Friese adds that drinking too much alcohol regularly or using recreational drugs “can affect our bodies on a cellular level and actually cause hair loss.” 
 
## **12. Going Vegan or Vegetarian May Stymie Shine**
When a diet changes significantly — especially switching from one that includes meat to one that is plant-based (hi, vegans and vegetarians!) — it may initiate hair loss or lead to dullness, Greene says. To avoid or minimize such a circumstance, she recommends consulting with a dietician before making any big dietary changes. This will help to ensure your nutritional intake remains adequate and balanced during and after the transition.
 
## **13. Nutrition-Related Hair Loss Can Be Reversed**
Provided that a poor diet is the major contributing cause to the hair thinning or loss, tweaking your diet to become healthier and more balanced and taking doctor-guided supplements (if needed), should help hair bounce back to a healthy state, Adams says. “If the thinning hair is not due to an autoimmune issue, the [hair damage or thinning](https://aedit.com/procedure/nonsurgical-hair-restoration-solutions) can be reversed in most cases,” Friese assures — though patience will be needed. “After the excessive shedding has stopped, it usually takes two to three months for the hair to start growing back,” she notes. At that point, you can expect your locks to grow around half an inch per month.

When you consider hair envy, do you think of a specific color, a style your hairdresser can't replicate, or those curtain bangs you see on your favorite influencer? For me, hair envy is reserved for those with a thick mane that seemingly grows with ease and a hairline that doesn’t waver. 

Like any woman, my relationship with my hair is complicated, and it has often been a source of insecurity. What was once thin and long became thinner and more sparse as my hairline started to show gaps in my twenties. I guess there is some relief in knowing that I’m not the only woman to experience this. The [causes for hair loss and hair thinning](https://aedit.com/aedition/common-causes-of-hair-loss-thinning-shedding-in-women) vary, but approximately 40 percent of women in the United States experience some form of it. Even so, [hair loss](https://aedit.com/concern/hair-loss) can be distressing.

I always knew that voluminous locks were not in the genetic cards for me, but what I didn’t know was that, by my mid-twenties, I would notice more of my scalp peeking through than I would’ve liked. “[Minoxidil](https://aedit.com/procedure/minoxidil-rogaine) belongs to a class of drugs known as vasodilators and is used to help hair growth in the treatment of baldness,” explains [Gretchen Friese](https://fousheesalonspa.com/salon-team/gretchen-friese/), a BosleyMD certified trichologist, when I inquired about the science behind the brand. The star ingredient of the foaming topical product, minoxidil is approved by the [U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)](https://aedit.com/aedition/modern-history-of-us-food-drug-cosmetic-regulation-fda) to treat hair loss in men and women. In 1988, the FDA approved 2 percent topical minoxidil as a treatment for androgenetic alopecia (read: male pattern baldness) in men. The solution was known by the brand name Rogaine. By 1992, the agency had approved the formula for the treatment of female pattern hair loss. “The exact reason that minoxidil works is not fully understood, but, as a vasodilator, it widens the blood vessels which delivers more oxygen-rich blood to the hair follicles,” Friese shares. “It also helps increase the size of hair follicles, which promotes the growth of thicker, stronger hairs.” Needless to say, I couldn’t wait to get started. 

## **Getting to the Root of the Problem**
I knew going in that the root cause of my hair thinning is largely genetic, as I’ve seen other women in my family with manes similar to mine. But I also realized that my lifestyle could be to blame. Stress, bad sleep hygiene, and, at times, poor dietary decisions likely played a role, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Friese agreed that these habits don’t help matters, but there was one more thing I wasn’t considering: [my scalp](https://aedit.com/aedition/scalp-care-for-healthy-hair). “A good [hair care routine](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-hair-care-products-by-texture-color) that focuses on creating a healthy scalp environment is the first place to start,” she shares. 

Friese notes that women and men experience hair loss differently, which is why my hair concerns didn’t look like what I expected. “In men, hair loss starts in the front of the head and recedes to the back until they go bald,” she explains. “Women lose hair from all over their head that starts at the part line.” This so-called ‘diffuse hair loss’ is exactly what I was experiencing. “The hair at the temples may also recede in women,” she adds.

Because the timeline for results depends on the individual (generally about two months to see some improvement), I wasn’t expecting to see any new hairs spring up for a while. It took about 45 days to notice a few new baby hairs sprout up and frame my face. Once I realized that the product was working, I spent more time analyzing each area, waiting for my hair to fill in and for my ponytail to become thicker. Although this product does not always enhance the thickness of the tresses, the idea of having more hair in general was enough to keep me motivated. Around the two-month mark, I noticed the area that I was most concerned with — my temples — having a darker hue as the spotty areas began to fill in on their own. 

Minoxidil works for me, but I want to address that the experience isn’t without its cons. Although the foam goes on clear and has a very light consistency, I noticed my hair had a crispy and lackluster texture at the roots when I woke up in the morning. My other concern was the routine. If I had stopped applying it or skipped a few days accidentally, would that mess up my progress? According to Friese, the product “will not cause permanent regrowth of scalp hair, so you must continue using it every day to keep the regrown hair.” Basically, if I wanted my hair to grow continuously, I had to maintain the routine. As my robust vanity implies, I love a good regimen, but, when initial results take a while to appear, it can be hard to trust the process and not give up. 

## **Will I Keep Using Minoxidil?**
Considering the visibility of the results after just two months of minoxidil use and the knowledge that my hair thinning concerns can be treated with a topical product, I am determined to continue using it to maintain my growth. I realize that it is both a time and financial commitment, but, while the product was gifted at first, I will gladly repurchase it and recommend it to others experiencing similar issues. Hair loss may be common but that doesn’t make it any less stressful. One route to avoid in the quest to restore your mane? “Blindly taking supplements or self-diagnosing by Google to try to treat yourself,” cautions [Jennifer MacGregor, MD](https://www.instagram.com/nyclaserdoc/), a board certified dermatologist at [UnionDerm](https://www.unionderm.com/) in New York City. Not only could it not help your thinning hair, but it could actually hurt your cause, she adds.

So, if your daily hair shedding goes beyond the average 50 to 100 strands, it may be time to consult with an expert. While the healthy lifestyle tips above will do no harm and should be incorporated into your hair care routine regardless, they may not be enough to stop your shedding. If that’s the case, there are an array of non-surgical in-office and at-home hair loss treatments to consider:

### **1. Over-the-Counter Treatments**
“There's not a uniform protocol when it comes to hair loss,” says [Dendy Engelman, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/dendy-engelman-md-312), a board certified dermatologist in NYC. “But there are a number of over-the-counter products on the market that can be really effective in improving hair growth.” She is a fan of the [Prose Root Source Supplements](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fprose.com%2Fpages%2Fsupplements) because they are “customized based on several factors” and made-to-order in small batches that are free of common irritants (think: mineral oils, dyes, and GMOs).

### **2. Prescription-Strength Topicals**
If hair doesn’t respond to the OTC Nizoral shampoo, a more intense Nizoral formulation with 2 percent zinc pyrithione can be prescribed along with a selenium sulfide solution, but Dr. MacGregor warns that these options are *not* color-safe. For significant scalp inflammation, Dr. MacGregor adds pulsed topical steroid solutions into the mix, which is “a stronger topical steroid application” that is limited to once every one to two weeks. “It’s rubbed into the scalp, then you’ll sleep overnight with a shower cap, before washing it out in the morning with one of the medicated shampoos, leaving it on for five minutes before rinsing,” she explains.

### **3. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy**
A favorite of Dr. Engelman, [platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments](https://aedit.com/procedure/plateletrich-plasma-prp-for-hair-loss) essentially use your own blood to stimulate hair growth. “PRP therapy uses injections of a concentration of a patient’s own blood platelets to restore and accelerate hair growth,” she explains. First, your doctor will draw your blood, then it’s “placed in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets, before injecting the serum back into the hair follicle,” she shares. “The plasma contains white blood cells and platelets, which are rich in growth factors and stem cells.”

You may recall [Kourtney Kardashian gave PRP a try](https://aedit.com/aedition/kourtney-kardashian-prp-injections-to-treat-hair-loss) during an episode of *Keeping Up With the Kardashians* to treat an area of her scalp that had thinned as a result of a too-taut ponytail, and [men can benefit as well](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-prp-injections-for-male-hair-loss). Regardless, you should expect to book a PRP therapy appointment every four to six weeks for up to 6 months, depending on the severity of your condition. From there, annual or semi-annual maintenance should do the trick. 

### **4. Steroid Injections**
Cortisone shots, performed by a board certified dermatologist, can be used to address some forms of hair loss. It is especially effective for treating the common autoimmune disorder alopecia areata, which is when “the body’s own immune system starts fighting hair follicles,” Dr. Engleman says. We’d be remiss not to mention that it can be a doozy of a treatment though. As many as 80 pricks may be injected during just one appointment. Steroid treatments are scheduled every four to six weeks, with visible hair regrowth usually within one or two months.

### **5. Laser Therapy**
Low level light therapy (LLLT) is a treatment that is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for hair growth. By harnessing the effects of laser and light, it works to “reactivate your hair’s natural growth pattern by promoting blood circulation and collagen production,” Dr. Engelman shares. This in-office procedure works in three stages: stopping hair loss, thickening of current hair, and regrowth of new hair with a stronger, fuller hair follicle that replaces the thin, original follicle. The result? “Increased growth and thickness,” she says.

## **The Takeaway**
There is a good chance you may experience hair thinning at some point in your life. When healthy lifestyle changes and OTC remedies don’t work, it’s time to consult with a board certified dermatologist. Since the causes of hair loss are numerous and complex, now is not the time to multitask. “Make an appointment just for this,” Dr. MacGregor says. “Don’t just mention, ‘Oh, by the way, I’m losing hair,’ at the end of a visit for something else.”

While the exact technique will differ depending on which hair transplant method  — [follicular unit extraction (FUE)](https://aedit.com/procedure/follicular-unit-extraction-fue) or [follicular unit transplantation (FUT)](https://aedit.com/procedure/strip-harvesting) — a patient chooses, the transplantation process usually starts with extracting and harvesting hair from the back of the head, where the scar will easily be hidden by the hair above it. But what about patients who don’t have enough hair for a scalp transfer? A body hair transplant (BHT) may be the answer. 

## **What to Know About Body Hair Transplants**
Oftentimes, body hair transplant patients who have hair excised from a donor site on the body to the scalp are repeat customers. “The number one reason for a BHT is lack of scalp donor supply from previous procedures,” explains [Gary Linkov, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/gary-linkov-md-6976), a New York City-based board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon who specializes in hair restoration. In other cases, patients may need a BHT from the start. “Ideal candidates can also have naturally thin, patchy hair with low density and/or injury to the scalp affecting the normal donor areas,” he shares. 

Either way, typical donor areas include the beard, abdomen, chest, and back. Follicles from the arms and legs are typically not used because hair in those areas tends to be a bit too thin to be moved to the scalp.

Body hair transplants can also work the other way. Patients may wish to transplant hair from the scalp to the face or body (think: [eyebrows](https://aedit.com/aedition/surgical-eyebrow-transplants-for-sparse-thinning-brows), chest, and pubic area). This is a potential treatment option for those who have lost body hair as a result of chemotherapy, injury, and/or genetics. 

### **Body Hair Transplant Procedures**
Prior to a body hair transplant procedure, patients should avoid blood thinning medications and refrain from drinking or smoking. Additionally, the surgeon will advise patients on how to care for their hair in the lead up to surgery. Some donor sites may need to be shaved and regrown shortly before transplantation.

While the length of a hair transplant procedure largely depends on the donor site and how many grafts will be needed, body to scalp transplants can take up to 10 hours, which is longer than the four to eight hours usually needed for scalp transplants. The downtime and recovery associated with both procedures, however, is comparable. Bleeding, swelling, and bruising are to be expected, and the transplanted hairs should be handled carefully for the first five days to allow them to set properly.

The length of procedure, recovery timeline, and aftercare for scalp to body transplants is similar to body to scalp transplants, but Dr. Linkov says a key difference is that scalp hairs tend to grow at a more predictable rate post-transplant than body hair. 

## **Body Hair Transplant Results**
It can be daunting for patients to hear that they won’t see the results of their hair transplants for weeks or even months, but the good news is those results are permanent. Depending on the area that the hair was transplanted to, you may need to avoid strenuous exercise, getting your hair wet, and/or cutting it for five to seven days. After about three weeks, the shafts of the transplanted hairs will start to fall out and hair regrowth will start around four to six months post-op. Patients can expect to see final results for all forms of body and hair transplants within 10 to 12 months.
