The practice of sitting together inside a cave has been around since, well, before humans walked upright. Fast forward through centuries of evolution and we’ve landed in the same place—but now, we call it self-care. Modern salt caves or salt rooms are now being manufactured using halogenerators (which distribute high levels of microscopic salt particles into the air) and are often built with walls of salt. These spaces are visited by folks seeking out the reported mental and physical benefits of “halotherapy” or salt therapy as part of a holistic health regimen. 

Halotherapy has existed since the 12th century when Eastern Europeans traveled to naturally occurring salt caves to improve their health. The modern attitude toward salt caves began to develop in the [1800s](https://www.lung.org/blog/promising-placebo-salt-halotherapy), when Polish salt miners found themselves healthier than their neighbors, with fewer respiratory illnesses such as common colds and coughs. Later, after WWII, German doctor Karl Hermann Spannagel noticed an anecdotal improvement in health in his patients who had hidden in salt caves to avoid bombing. But you don’t have to get on a plane to experience halotherapy — manmade salt rooms exist everywhere from [Albuquerque](https://optimumhuman.com/biohacking/salt-room/) to [Yellowstone](https://yellowstonevalleywoman.com/balance-and-harmony), and you can often sign up to spend time in one for a [surprisingly affordable price](https://www.montauksaltcave.com/pricing-services).

As noted above, salt therapy rooms use a tool known as a halogenerator to crush sodium chloride and disperse it into the air in particles tiny enough to enter the lungs through the nostrils, mimicking the environment of a natural salt cave. Though many spas tout the benefits of beautiful pink Himalayan salt rooms or may layer salt onto their floors or walls as decor, the halogenerator is the key ingredient in any salt room.  

## **WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A SALT THERAPY EXPERIENCE**

A typical salt therapy session is 45 minutes, says Carol Oldmixon, the owner of [Montauk Salt Cave](https://www.montauksaltcave.com/) in Huntington, New York. “We use a halogenerator to pump the salt into the room, and you just lay back and breathe for 45 minutes,” she says. She plays meditative music in her salt cave to help clients relax, and the room is heated (or cooled, depending on the season) to about 70 degrees. You can wear your regular clothes—minus your shoes since the floor is made of salt.  

According to Oldmixon, you can feel an immediate difference in your body when you step into a salt therapy room. “It really supports the body. It’s a natural treatment for conditions such as anxiety, sleeplessness, allergies, asthma, inflammation, and the common cold,” she says. “It shrinks inflammation, which opens up your sinuses and allows everything to drain…you’ll see an immediate difference in your sinuses.” Clients often visit Oldmixon’s salt cave weekly, especially when dealing with chronic conditions like allergies or arthritis. For most folks, there are no side effects to halotherapy, though she directs concerned clients to check with their doctors before entering a salt therapy room. Typically, she advises people who are currently undergoing chemotherapy or who have recently had an organ transplant to avoid halotherapy. Folks of all ages visit her salt cave, and she even has a family room set up for parents and children to enjoy together. 

## **WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF HALOTHERAPY?**

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding halotherapy from spa lovers and wellness practitioners, board-certified physicians aren’t ready to confirm any definite physical boons to halotherapy. “A lot of wellness centers and spas tout all kinds of benefits stemming from halotherapy, alluding to how salt, with its anti-inflammatory properties, has been used for centuries to do everything from improving asthma and treating COPD to improving eczema and acne,” says [Omer Ibrahim, MD, FAAD](https://www.instagram.com/chicagoskindoc), a board-certified dermatologist at [Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology](https://chicagodermatology.com/our-providers/omer-ibrahim-md). “While studies on how halotherapy can help improve respiratory issues or even work to complement allopathic medicine exist, there are very few of them, they are limited in the number of subjects, and the results have been inconclusive.”

According to the [American Lung Association](https://www.lung.org/blog/promising-placebo-salt-halotherapy), more research needs to be done before doctors can be certain of the therapy’s respiratory benefits. Dr. Norman Edelman, the ALA’s Senior Scientific Advisor, believes that inhaling salt could at least provide relief for certain respiratory symptoms. "When fine salt particles are inhaled, they will fall on the airway linings and draw water into the airway, thinning the mucus and making it easier to raise, thus making people feel better," Dr. Edelman told the ALA. "Also, these environments are allergen-free and thus good for people with allergies affecting their lungs." Internist and gastroenterologist [Dr. Niket Sonpal](https://tourocom.touro.edu/do/faculty/sonpal-niket.php) points out that “many people report feeling better after sessions, especially those with respiratory issues, [but] the scientific community has not fully validated its effectiveness through large-scale, rigorous clinical trials.”

Some salt therapy proponents also claim that the practice can be beneficial for immune system support. Arash Akhavan, board-certified dermatologist and owner of [The Dermatology and Laser Group](https://dermatologyandlasergroup.com) in New York City, agrees that “some anecdotal reports indicate that salt room therapy may provide mild benefits for inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis due to its potential antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.” The salt exposure may also offer mild exfoliation, Akhavan says, which can help with conditions like acne. Still, “any observed improvements are likely temporary and not a substitute for evidence-based dermatological treatments.” 

Though halotherapy itself is not yet directly linked to skin benefits, there are physical rewards to a regular self-care practice. “Stress reduction and self-care can have a profound impact on skin health,” says Dr. Akhavan. “Chronic stress leads to elevated cortisol levels, which can exacerbate inflammatory skin conditions like acne, rosacea, and eczema. Engaging in relaxing activities, such as halotherapy sessions, may help regulate stress responses and in turn, improve skin appearance by reducing flare-ups of stress-induced conditions.” 

## **WHAT ARE THE MENTAL BENEFITS OF SALT ROOM THERAPY?** 

Though the physical benefits of halotherapy require more study, salt rooms also provide a calming, refreshing space conducive to meditation and quiet reflection. Studies show that [mindfulness](https://www.apa.org/topics/mindfulness/meditation) leads to diminished stress, anxiety, and depression and makes it easier to regulate your emotions. Making regular time on your calendar for a wellness treatment, whether a full-blown spa day or an hour in a salt cave, can help integrate self-care practices into your daily life and work as a reminder to tend to your mental health. There’s a solid chance you’ve never heard of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide—that’s probably because you know it by its widely-used acronym, NAD+. Over the last several years, the naturally occurring enzyme has taken the health and wellness industry by storm. “Decreased ATP can accelerate aging and degeneration of all tissues in the body, including and perhaps most visibly, in the skin. Research suggests that NAD+ helps maintain skin elasticity by promoting collagen and elastin synthesis, improving tissue hydration, and supporting adequate nutrient delivery by supporting the skin’s microvasculature,” explains Kahn. “NAD+ also activates the Sirtuin family of longevity-associated proteins that promote cellular repair and reduce inflammation, both of which contribute to slowing down and possibly reversing the aging process.”

In addition to its anti-aging benefits, many report that the popular treatment boosts energy levels and enhances cognitive function. By supporting mitochondrial health and regulating oxidative stress and inflammation, NAD+ can also improve focus, memory, and mental clarity.

- **Oral Supplements:** NAD+ supplements are available in capsule and powder form and are marketed for their potential to boost energy and support longevity. While they offer a more convenient option compared to IV therapy, their effectiveness is patient-dependent since they must first be absorbed through the digestive system. Though, Kahn prefers precursors of NAD+, such as nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), over direct oral NAD+ supplementation because they are easily accessible over the counter, are bioavailable by mouth, and are efficiently transported into cells. For optimal results, supplements must be taken consistently. As with all supplements, there are potential side effects, such as nausea, headaches, itching, and sweating.

- **Injections and Patches:** While less common than IV therapy and oral supplements, NAD+ can also be administered through intramuscular injections and transdermal patches, either in-office or at home. Intramuscular injections provide a quicker method for NAD+ absorption and are typically administered in a clinical setting. Transdermal patches, on the other hand, deliver a slow and steady release of NAD+ through the skin.

When you consider that the experience of a sauna (infrared or otherwise) has long involved a trip to the spa or gym where you physically sit in a room for an extended period of time, it can be hard to wrap your head around the idea that you may be able to recreate that experience anytime, anywhere with a relatively portable tool.

## **What Is an Infrared Sauna Blanket?**
In simpletest terms, an infrared sauna blanket is a tool that is designed to deliver the benefits of a traditional infrared sauna in blanket form. “Sauna blankets use infrared heat and work in the same way as an infrared sauna cabin,” says Lauren Dovey, the founder of [Heat Healer](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fheathealer.com%2F). 

For the uninitiated, infrared saunas (of any kind) differ from dry Finnish saunas in that they don’t heat the air. Instead, they use infrared lamps to warm the body. “Compared to a Finnish sauna, they are a more gradual and comfortable heat,” Dovey shares. When you enter an infrared sauna, you don’t feel hot right off the bat. As you spend time in an infrared sauna, your body will gradually warm. “This means most people can tolerate the heat for a longer period of time, which can extend the benefits they receive,” she notes.

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at what this technology can do for your mind and body.

### **Skin-Boosting Benefits**
From a skin perspective, “the heat from the blanket opens up pores and causes sweating, which releases toxins, bacteria, dead skin cells, and other impurities,” Dr. Engelman explains. All of that can help “you achieve clearer skin,” she adds. But that’s not all. “Infrared sauna blankets also improve circulation and slightly increase heart rate, simulating the effects of a light-to-moderate workout,” she shares. Such exercise “is known to have benefits for the skin,” she says, adding that “improved circulation may also help to boost collagen production.”

It should be noted that infrared light does not [damage the skin](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-to-treat-sun-damage) the way ultraviolet (UV) light does. “There is little risk of developing cancer as a result of exposure to the infrared rays in a sauna blanket,” Dr. Engelman says. “It is more likely that you will suffer adverse effects from dehydration or accidental thermal (heat) damage if your body is not used to the higher temperatures of the blanket.”

### **Health & Wellness Benefits**
We all know saunas have both mental and physical effects, and infrared saunas are no exception. “Other pros of infrared sauna blankets include elevated endorphin levels, lower stress levels, and a better night’s rest,” Dr. Engelman shares. Below are three of the most notable mind-body benefits:

1. **Mood Boost**: “Heat therapy sends signals to our brains to release feel-good chemicals including serotonin, endorphins, and dopamine,” Dovey says. For maximum effect, she advocates for “stacking” wellness practices like meditation and breathwork while in the sauna or blanket to “stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system” and encourage the body “to press pause on the release of stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine.” The result? “This double whammy effect may help promote an even greater feeling of calm, focus, and peace,” she shares.
2. **Calorie Burn**: We know that infrared saunas can get your heart rate up, and Dovey says that, during a session with the Heat Healer blanket, you can burn up to 600 calories. “Heat therapy, like sauna use, can be a mimetic for exercise and has a similar effect on cardiac output, which means that – just like when you exercise – your body is also going to burn calories,” she explains. “This is what leads to longer-term weight loss.”
3. **Pain Relief**: Research has [found](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21742283/) that infrared saunas can reduce muscle and body pain related to fibromyalgia, endometriosis, nerve conditions, arthritis, and more. “Because infrared saunas increase blood circulation, they can support the body to heal, particularly when repairing inflamed joints,” Dovey says. It can also be used as a recovery tool. “The infrared sauna is a great way to relax and ease sore muscles after a workout by increasing blood circulation and assisting muscle repair,” she adds.

## **Infrared Sauna Blanket Safety**
Infrared saunas and blankets are generally considered safe and effective, but there are a few things to keep in mind. “There is some risk relating to dehydration due to copious amounts of sweating while in the blanket and possible thermal damage if temperatures are raised too high for your skin/body to tolerate,” Dr. Engelman reiterates. To avoid this, she recommends drinking plenty of water before and after treatments and not falling into the trap of trying to do too much too soon. “If you’re a beginner to infrared sauna blankets, start at a lower temperature and shorter amount of time than recommended,” she says. By gradually working up to the recommended settings, you’ll avoid stressing out your body.

It goes without saying, but always be sure to follow the instructions to a T – from what you wear in the blanket to how much time you spend in it. It’s always best to consult with your healthcare provider before beginning a new therapy, and this is especially important if you are pregnant, under the age of 16, sensitive to heat, or have certain skin or medical conditions.

## **How Do Infrared Sauna Blankets Measure Up?** 
The most obvious benefit of infrared sauna blankets? They are significantly more convenient than the standard sauna cabin. “Sauna blankets heat up quickly, are cost-effective to run, convenient to have in your home, portable, and easy to store when not in use,” Dovey says. You also have a bit more flexibility when it comes to how you utilize your time during treatment. “A benefit we hear from our customers is that having your head out of the blanket makes it much more comfortable than a sauna cabin,” Dovey shares. “You can lay there and relax and listen to your favorite meditation, weekly podcast, catch up on that Netflix show you’ve been wanting to watch, or just sit in silence as the infrared heat works on your body.”

While you’ll enjoy pain relief and relaxation (mental and physical) immediately, you’ll need to develop a consistent routine to reap some of the other results. “For longer-term benefits such as weight loss, cardiovascular health, and collagen production, it is recommended to use at least three times a week for 30 to 60 minutes a session,” Dovey notes, adding that you should limit usage to no more than an hour a day.

If it works, it will stand the test of time – and there’s no truer example than the practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). While we often look to modern innovations to solve ailments that come with having a body (think: headaches, sore muscles, low energy), it’s often because we’re seeking a quick fix. When it comes to TCM and, more specifically, acupuncture, however, the remedy isn’t a bandaid and it certainly isn’t one and done. The treatment doesn’t just focus on the pain point, but rather its root and how to treat it long-term. 

Now, the majority of us are no strangers to the overwhelming cycle of work, family, and life responsibilities. They can take a toll on not just the psyche but our physical wellbeing, too. It’s a hamster wheel of stress that we often wear on our face with dark circles, a dull complexion, or tired eyes and in our bodies with area tension and pain. 

To find another way of treating these symptoms *and* combating these stressors at their root, I had the chance to try acupuncture at one of New York’s most sought after wellness destinations, [WTHN](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwthn.com%2F), with its co-founder and chief healing officer, [Shari Auth, DACM](https://wthn.com/pages/acupuncture#healers). With some two decades of experience, Dr. Auth was able to explain exactly what the ancient treatment can offer, its lesser-known benefits, and why it’s never going out of style.

## **What Is Acupuncture?** 
“Acupuncture is 3,000 years old and is one of the oldest forms of medicine in the world as a part of TCM,” Dr. Auth says of the treatment. The practice of placing hair-thin needles across specific pain points is known to stimulate the nervous, immune, cardiovascular, endocrine, reproductive, and digestive systems (if the millennia of practice aren’t enough, perhaps the over 4,000 scientific studies espousing the efficacy of acupuncture for concerns ranging from [tennis elbow](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7870184/) to [PTSD](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7328930/) to [skin health](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5653339/) will make you a believer). 

And while acupuncture seems to do it all, this painless healing treatment is capable of so much more. For Dr. Auth, acupuncture is part of a holistic approach to wellbeing. The mission for WTHN is “to make it more accessible and do the education necessary because it has proven benefits. ## **The Treatment** 
The image of acupuncture is very mainstream – tiny needles placed all over the body in a manner that seems simultaneously haphazard and methodical. There is a method to the placement of said needles to truly make an impact. “The needles are placed in acupuncture points, the meeting place of blood, nerve, and lymph,” Dr. Auth shares. Part of the training to become an acupuncturist requires an understanding of where those points are on the body and how they interact.

Prior to my appointment, I filled out an online form to dive into my specific concerns (chief among them: lower back pain, insomnia, and muscle fatigue) to give Dr. Auth a better understanding of what was troubling me. This information is especially crucial when making an appointment to safeguard your experience. 

Now, as somebody who is used to injections (be it Botox® or a vaccine), I was fully prepared to feel the needles. In my mind, it’s a surefire sign that something is happening. However, to say that the insertion was painless would be an understatement. Furthermore, the sensation once they were placed was nonexistent to the point where I was concerned if it would work or not. “Those who are afraid of needles will notice that, after that first needle goes in, it’s not noticeable and not a big deal,” Dr. Auth notes. 

My session was paired with a guided meditation via headphones, so I was able to truly immerse myself in the ambient surroundings. The WTHN space is clean, inviting, relaxing – the antithesis of the busy New York streets. To say that I walked out a new (and more relaxed) woman would be an apt description. 

## **Benefits of Acupuncture** 
From migraines to physical strains and even anxiety, the treatment is beneficial for virtually anyone, and while we are all familiar with these pain points, here are a few more benefits of acupuncture to note.

The tiny needles can be placed over the back of the body or the face, and, while it’s not going to sculpt your cheekbones or give you six-pack abs, it may be a part of your complexion-perfecting regimen. “It’s good for a host of skin ailments from [psoriasis](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-live-with-and-treat-psoriasis) to [eczema](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-products-to-treat-eczema-flare-ups-in-the-winter) and helps reduce wrinkles, as well as boosting collagen and elastin,” Dr. Auth says. Furthermore, Dr. Auth notes that it can address digestive issues (IBS, anyone?) and those that relate to gas or bloating, which can not only feel uncomfortable but impact the skin and over all self-image. 

### **2. Better Beauty Sleep**

As Dr. Auth explains, it provides a boost of “natural melatonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid, which helps to relax the mind.” 

So, was a better night’s sleep in the cards for me? As someone who has a love-hate relationship with bedtime, post-acupuncture, I was treated to a level of rest I hadn’t experienced in months. “Acupuncture is great for inflammation-based pain, as it increases circulation and is good for tight muscles,” says Dr. Auth. While acupuncture is not necessarily recommended immediately after a procedure (hello, healing stitches and limited mobility), it may be beneficial in the months to come to promote healing and minimize pain. I haven’t had any aesthetic treatments lately, but I entered the appointment with sore muscles and lower back pain. The relief was almost immediate. One appointment certainly couldn’t solve my problems (nor did I expect it to), but there’s no doubt in my mind that my session with Dr. Auth provided much welcomed relief and made me seriously consider incorporating acupuncture into my overall health and wellness routine.
