### **Non-Surgical Solutions**
- **Emsella®**: “[Emsella®](https://bodybybtl.com/solutions/btl-emsella/) consists of high-intensity focused electromagnetic stimulation (HIFEM) that is similar to MRI magnetic technology,” Dr. Rajagopal explains. “It stimulates and enhances the function of the pelvic floor muscles.” She says the treatment is ideal for those experiencing urinary incontinence and/or an inability to achieve strong orgasms. The non-invasive treatment (you sit on a chair-like device that stimulates the muscles) calls for six 30-minute sessions in a three-week span.
- **Botox**: Yes, you read that right, Botox for vaginal health. The neurotoxin is used off-label for the treatment of [vaginismus](https://aedit.com/aedition/botox-injections-for-vaginismus), a medical condition that causes involuntary vaginal muscle spasms that can make inserting tampons and penetrative sex painful —  if not impossible. ## **3. Candidates Vary** 
As with any procedure, those interested in vaginal rejuvenation should consult with their provider to ensure their preferred procedure(s) is right for them. As we mentioned, treatments that address vaginal health and appearance aren't one-size-fits-all, nor should they be. “With each treatment, we have an examination first to see who is a viable candidate,” Dr. Rajagopal explains. Topics such as medical history and overall health and wellness should also be discussed during the examination process. Women may also want to consider whether or not they are planning to have children or want to further expand their family. ## **4. Sensitivity Can Be Compromised**

But what about the mons pubis? While both males and females have a mons pubis, it is more prominent in females — and a variety of factors can impact its fullness. 

Sometimes referred to as ‘FUPA’ (a.k.a. Fat Upper Pubic Area), excess skin and fat can occur as a result of weight fluctuations, pregnancy, hormonal changes, or genetics, leading to aesthetic and functional concerns. ## **What Is Monsplasty?**
Also known as a mons pubis reduction or pubic lift, [monsplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/monsplasty) can remove excess skin and/or fat for a firmer and more contoured mons pubis (i.e. the area of fatty tissue located directly in front of the pubic bone). “Mons pubis reduction is more common than you may think,” says [David Shafer, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/david-shafer-md-153), a double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York City. “There are even acronyms such as FUPA — Fat Upper Pubic Area — to describe the condition.” 

As he explains, such patients report “an unsightly or uncomfortable fullness in the pubic area, which is disproportionate to the rest of their body.” That fullness can show through clothes, make wearing tight garments difficult, and, in some cases, interfere with sexual intercourse or urination. “Good candidates for mons pubis reduction are those that are otherwise healthy and in shape but have concerns about their pubic area fullness,” Dr. Shafer notes.

### **Benefits of Monsplasty** 
Monsplasty can involve liposuction (to remove fat), surgical excision (to remove skin), or a combination of the two. “The planned procedure depends on the patient's anatomy and expectations from surgery,” Dr. Shafer shares. For patients who are concerned about “localized fullness,” he says liposuction is often enough. If skin laxity is a concern, surgical excision may be necessary.

Because the mons pubis sits just below the lower abdomen, patients may wish to address both areas at once. “If the patient's lower abdomen is also protuberan or if there is a step off or bulge between the lower abdomen and pubis, then a [mini-abdominoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/mini-tummy-tuck) may be the best option to give the smoothest result,” Dr. Shafer explains. 

While [tummy tucks](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty) and [liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/tumescent-liposuction) (back and/or abdominal) are often combined with monsplasty to improve the final result, they are not the only [pairings](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-aesthetic-procedures-to-combine-to-maximize-appointments). At his practice, “patients also take the opportunity to get other procedures done while in the operating room – such as [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-solutions) or [breast reduction](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-reduction-and-revision-solutions),” Dr. Shafer adds.

### **Monsplasty Procedure**
Depending on the technique employed, a monsplasty surgery can last one to two hours. In the case of a lipo-only procedure, tiny incisions are made and the fat is removed via a liposuction cannula. The outpatient procedure takes about an hour. If a surgical excision is required or if a tummy tuck is being performed in tandem, the procedure may be closer to two hours. An incision is made in the hairline of the pubic mound (around where a [c-section incision](https://aedit.com/aedition/invasive-non-invasive-procedures-to-fix-appearance-of-c-section-scar) is usually located). Excess skin and fatty tissue is removed before the site is closed with sutures.

In both cases, surgical drains may be placed to help reduce swelling and discomfort. They will be removed a few days later during a follow-up appointment.

### **Monsplasty Recovery & Results**
While the [type of anesthesia](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-anesthesia) you receive will depend on your surgeon and preferences, you should plan to have someone help you get home after surgery. The recovery process will largely depend on the type of monsplasty procedure performed. “If treated with liposuction, the patient can expect a few days of downtime but a quick return to normal activities and work,” Dr. Shafer says. 

Excision and tummy tuck patients will need to take it easy a bit longer and should anticipate about a week of downtime before heading back to school or work. From there, it’ll be at least a month before a full resumption of normal activities. “Returning to [exercise](https://aedit.com/aedition/when-to-start-exercising-again-after-cosmetic-surgery-procedures) and other strenuous activities can take four to six weeks to allow time for healing,” he explains.

As with any surgery, [swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery) is one of the most common post-op side effects, and it may cause the pubic area to look even fuller than it did before. But, not to worry, the swelling will significantly subside in the first few weeks and then continue to resolve over three to six months. Incision site [scarring](https://aedit.com/aedition/minimizing-scars-after-surgery) should fade over the course of a year. The results of monsplasty are considered permanent (assuming there are no large fluctuations in weight), though the skin will continue to age naturally.

Let’s be honest, the thought of an injection in the vulva is somewhat terrifying. Add in the fact that the shot involves [platelet-rich plasma (PRP)](https://aedit.com/aedition/prp-and-stem-cells-are-changing-the-face-of-the-cosmetics-industry), and you may be even more ready to jump to another article. But women have found the rejuvenating results of such injections to be worth any momentary discomfort. Intrigued? Here’s what you need to know about O-Shot for [vaginal rejuvenation](https://aedit.com/procedure/vaginal-rejuvenation-solutions).

## **What Is O-Shot?**
O-Shot refers to an “injection of platelets into numbed areas of the vagina, clitoris, and labia,” says [Jason Emer, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jason-emer-md-722), a board certified cosmetic dermatologist in West Hollywood. The purpose is to heighten orgasms and improve sexual dysfunction. “This process uses your own body’s growth factors to stimulate healing and rejuvenation,” he explains.

The most well known version of the treatment is the Orgasm Shot®, which was coined by Charles Runels, MD — the same doctor that popularized the [vampire facial](https://aedit.com/procedure/vampire-facelift) with Kim Kardashian and the [P-Shot](https://aedit.com/aedition/p-shot-prp-penis-injections-erectile-dysfunction) (i.e. PRP injections into the penis). Although it’s gaining attention as a treatment option, there remains a lack of research into the use of PRP for [women’s sexual health](https://aedit.com/concern/female-sexual-wellness). In a [2014 pilot study](https://www.longdom.org/open-access/a-pilot-study-of-the-effect-of-localized-injections-of-autologous-platelet-rich-plasma-prp-for-the-treatment-of-female-sexual-dysfunction-2167-0420.1000169.pdf) that did not appear in a peer-reviewed publication, improvements in patient satisfaction and pain were noted but not considered statistically significant.

## **How Does O-Shot Work?**
While it may sound hard to believe, O-Shot is one of those things where the knowledge of what’s happening is actually more painful than the experience itself. “With the topical numbing cream, they should not experience anything more than a little discomfort, if any at all,” Dr. Emer says. 

Like a PRP treatment used for other aesthetic and therapeutic purposes, the procedure involves drawing a blood sample (usually the arm or some other non-invasive locale) and putting it into a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma, which is packed with healing growth factors. The PRP solution is then injected into different parts of the vulva with a fine-gauge needle.

Depending on the patient’s preferences, the PRP can be injected into three major areas: 

- The labia
- The internal vaginal canal
- The clitoral hood 

When injected into the labia majora, it helps maintain volume and improve overall appearance. Injecting into the vaginal canal and clitoral hood, meanwhile, is thought to provide the functional and sensorial benefits. O-Shot boosts blood flow to the treatment area, which may heighten sensitivity to stimulation and increase libido. Some patients also report an increase in vaginal lubrication, as well as improvement in urinary function and incontinence.

The entire procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes, though it’s not a one-and-done thing. “O-Shot requires a series of treatments first, typically monthly for three treatments,” Dr. Emer says. After the initial three sessions, the patient can come in every three to six months to “maintain results and prevent the symptoms of aging in this area,” he adds. 

As with any injection, “sensitivity and irritation are not uncommon or abnormal” after treatment, Dr. Emer says. Patients may feel a bit of pressure during treatment as the solution is injected, and there may be a mild stinging sensation that resolves within 15 minutes or so.

## **Best Candidates for O-Shot**
The ideal candidate for O-Shot is a healthy patient concerned about sexual dysfunction or hoping to increase arousal, lubrication, sexual desire, and/or orgasm. Women with urinary leakage, chronic pain from childbirth, and those who experience painful intercourse may also benefit from O-Shot.

## **O-Shot Recovery & Results** 
After an O-Shot treatment, patients can engage in sexual activity the very same day, though Dr. Emer notes that “some sensitivity in the area should be expected for a day or two.” As a result of the needle, there may be mild bleeding or spotting, but it typically resolves in less than 24 hours.

In terms of when you can expect to feel the results, everyone is different. “Some of my patients see results almost immediately, while others may have to wait three to four weeks to see any sort of difference,” Dr. Emer explains. So, how long do results last? While it depends on the patient, Dr. Emer says it’s usually between three and six months, at which point, you can come in for another treatment.

### **3. Who Is a Good Candidate for Vaginoplasty?**
As mentioned, there are a number of factors (both physiological and aesthetic) that lead women to pursue vaginoplasty. “Anyone who is unhappy with the outer apperance of their vagina (perhaps there is loose skin or sagging), anyone who has desire to improve their sex life, or anyone who wishes to tighten the vagina” is a good candidate, according to Dr. Emer. Those with symptoms of urinary incontinence or pelvic floor issues are also good candidates, though, he notes, they may need more complex treatments. In such cases, the patient can “have a cosmetic improvement performed at the same time as a medical functional treatment,” he says. When there are medical concerns, they should first be evaluated by a gynecologist.

On the flip side, you are not a good candidate for vaginoplasty if you are still planning to have children. “The layers of repair will most likely be injured with another delivery,” Dr. Patel says. She does, however, recommend vaginoplasty for “any woman who has completed childbirth and is seeking pleasure during intercourse again.”

### **4. How Do You Prepare for a Vaginoplasty?**
“Prior to the surgery, I like to recommend to my patients that they start stool softeners to avoid straining post-surgery,” Dr. Patel says. “Even if they don’t suffer with constipation, some may have constipation from narcotic use for post pain management.” Additionally, essential preparation before *any* surgery involves smoking cessation (if applicable), as well as discontinuing the use NSAIDs and medications with anticoagulant properties, “including [supplements and vitamins](https://aedit.com/aedition/vitamins-supplements-to-avoid-before-cosmetic-surgery) such as fish oil, garlic, turmeric, vitamin E, and red wine, for at least seven days prior to the surgery,” she explains.

Needless to say, cosmetic gynecology addresses a sensitive area, so it’s something to approach with an educated perspective. After the first seven days, patients can get up, walk around, and resume most normal activities, but heavy lifting and working out are off limits for the first month. “By three weeks, 50 percent of the swelling is down, by six weeks, 80 percent is down,” Dr. Judge explains. “By three months, that last little bit is gone.” Many doctors will also prescribe a course of antibiotics to prevent infection.

Vaginismus is a rare medical condition that causes involuntary vaginal muscle spasms. It can inserting tampons and penetrative sex painful — and, in some cases, impossible. For some, it is a condition they have always had, while others can develop it later in life due to hormonal changes (i.e. menopause), emotional trauma, or no obvious reason at all. 

Until recently, treatment often involved a combination of talking therapy sessions to address the emotional aspect of the condition and physical therapy and vaginal dilators to help the muscles adapt. The goal? Make intercourse possible or, at the very least, more comfortable. Now practitioners are using Botox® to paralyze the muscles that contract as a result of the condition with promising results. 

Here, we outline everything you need to know about the procedure and hear from two patients about their experiences.

## **How Does Botox® Treat Vaginismus?**
Botox® is a brand name for BoNT-A, which is a neuromodulator that relaxes muscles when it is injected. It is used therapeutically to treat a number of medical conditions, as well as being used for cosmetic purposes. For vaginismus, Botox® is injected into the vaginal muscles that contract to cause pain and prevent penetration. By paralyzing the muscles, it effectively treats involuntary contractions — such as those experienced by people who have vaginismus. There are three main groups of muscles that can be affected by vaginismus, but Botox® is generally injected into the bulbospongiosus muscle (i.e. the muscle that surrounds the opening of the vagina).

### **What Does the Botox® for Vaginismus Procedure Involve?**
The technique is based on the same principle as cosmetic Botox®. The product is injected into muscles that are contracting when they shouldn’t be. Your practitioner will establish which muscle groups are causing the pain and inject them accordingly. On average, 200 units of Botox® are used during a session. 

While needles in the vulva may signal discomfort, procedure pain is rarely a factor. Vaginismus Botox® treatments are carried out under local or general anesthesia. For some patients, general anesthesia is the best option because the condition would make it difficult to inject the local anesthesia that is needed. Either way, the procedure is usually an outpatient procedure.

Generally speaking, it takes patients four to five days to recover from the procedure, and the full effects of Botox® are realized around one week post-op. In some cases, the injection alone will be enough to allow for painless penetration. In other cases, the treatment will be combined with the use of dilators (to address physical discomfort) and therapy — in order to address the emotional issues that, of course, can’t be treated with a procedure alone.

### **How Many Sessions Are Needed to See Results?**
More often than not, just one session is needed for patients to enjoy the full benefits of the procedure. This long-term relief occurs despite the fact that the Botox® only lasts three to five months — the initial treatment breaks the pain cycle associated with vaginismus. Once patients are able to have painless intercourse or penetration, the body tends to relax the muscles on its own. It is possible, however, to have multiple treatments, if results from the first procedure wear off over time.

Doctors report a 90 to 97 percent success rate for the procedure, and side effects are minimal. As with any procedure, there is a small risk associated with the anesthesia. The procedure-specific risks include the potential for bladder issues and, on rare occasions, patients report botulism-like symptoms including blurred vision.

You've likely seen click-bait headlines about 'designer vaginas,' but [vaginal rejuvenation](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-vaginal-rejuvenation) is no passing fad. While the term encompasses an array of procedures (think: vaginoplasty, skin tightening, etc.), the most common component is [labiaplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/labiaplasty) (i.e. a surgical procedure that removes excess tissue from the labia minora, or 'inner lips' of the vulva). 

[According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/documents/News/Statistics/2018/plastic-surgery-statistics-full-report-2018.pdf), more than 10,000 labiaplasties were performed in the U.S. in 2018 alone. Unlike some procedures, which can solely be classified as plastic surgery or solely classified as cosmetic surgery, labiaplasty has both medical and aesthetic benefits.

Excess labia tissue can lead to pain and discomfort during exercise and intercourse, in addition to interfering with other routine activities. Conversely, the appearance and size of the labia may simply not align with a patient's preferred aesthetic. Regardless of the reasoning, a labiaplasty procedure can address everything from sexual health to general well-being.  

## **What Is Labiaplasty?** 
While a vaginoplasty addresses the size of the vaginal opening, a labiaplasty procedure is performed to correct the shape and size of the labia. According to Beverly Hills-based board certified plastic surgeon [Johnson Lee, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/johnson-lee-md-710), there are two types of labiaplasty:

1. **Trim Labiaplasty**: “The trim, or direct excision, method removes the amount of excess labia minora directly along the border of the labia," he explains. "This is perhaps the simplest method for most surgeons and allows accurate reduction of large labia. The downside to this procedure is that the natural darker corrugated edge of the labia minora is removed and the scar line becomes the new border."
2. **Wedge Labiaplasty**: "The wedge excision, which I prefer, requires more measurement and design to ensure a proper final length of the labia," Dr. Lee says. "The wedge excision leaves the natural border of the labia intact. The scar is on the inside of the labia, which is less visible.”

No matter the technique, a labiaplasty is generally an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. According to Dr. Lee, the procedure will not interfere with a woman's ability to give birth, though he does recommend new moms wait at least six months after a vaginal birth "to allow the tissues to stabilize and inflammation to resolve." This, he says, will ensure "the most accurate results.” 

Recovery time for both types of labiaplasty is usually around two weeks, but the downtime is minimal (if any). Patients will likely experience a bit of pain and swelling, which can be relieved with ice pads and medication (as directed by your surgeon). Intercourse and soaking in baths should be avoided for up to 40 days post-op. 

As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks associated with labiaplasty. Dr. Lee says “contour deformities or asymmetry, infection, scarring, pain, sensation changes, and wound healing complications” are the most common post-procedure concerns.

    I was looking into having some kind of rejuvenation ‘down there,’ but I didn’t know where to start. I consulted my plastic surgeon, who I have been going to for a few years now, and asked her for her advice on the matter. We decided to start with labiaplasty because it would address the changes that bothered me most since I had my children. I do want to say, I think it’s important that women do not feel like they should have to have surgery after childbirth. For me, it was a choice I decided on after giving a great deal of thought, and it was something I wanted for myself.     I was sedated but awake for the procedure with local anesthesia. I felt no pain or discomfort whatsoever during the procedure. The only pain — if you could even call it that — was from the needle they used to put the IV in. I was taken care of very well, and being in a familiar environment with a familiar team put me at ease. I would recommend asking to meet any other members of the provider’s team who will be present during the procedure at your pre-op appointment, if that’s possible. It’s a pretty intimate procedure, so I found it reassuring to be aware of who everyone was in the room while it was happening.

    Are you satisfied with the results of your surgery?

    I am, yes! I achieved the change I wanted to. In all honesty, I just feel more like myself again in that area. It’s something I would urge women to think about carefully. As I said, I think it’s important to consider why you’re considering it. Not that there’s a right or wrong reason, but I just don’t think there should be any pressure for people to feel like they should look perfect unless it’s something that matters to them, for whatever reason.

    What was the recovery process like?

     I had to discuss this carefully with my surgeon because I work as a dancer, so the recovery process was going to be important. I decided to have the procedure when I had a break in my schedule for three weeks because I didn’t want to push my body too hard too soon after surgery. This meant I was able to rest, ice the area, and generally take care of myself to help with recovery. I read up on nutrition and which foods can help aid recovery after a procedure, and I made sure to eat extra clean in the run-up to surgery and while I was recovering. In terms of pain, it wasn’t actually too bad — definitely not as bad as some of the injuries I’ve had in the past. I would say it was about a seven out of 10 at its very worst, so totally manageable. I’m pleased I opted to have the procedure when I had a clear window of time with no pressure to rush recovery. I would have said I could’ve gone back after about 10 days to two weeks, but longer was better for me.

    Oh, totally! It’s just one less thing to worry about. I always feel kind of silly saying that I used to worry about what I looked like. But it’s just nice to know I can wear what I want, I can be confident when I’m dating, and just not have to think about that part of me anymore. It took a little while for me to get used to the new sensations after surgery. It took a little while for sensation to come back at all, and, when it did, it was a bit different. But there hasn’t been any negative impact for me. The procedure was easy to recover from, too, so I’d totally recommend it to anyone who’s considering it.

Over the course of a lifetime, no one is immune to change. When it comes to the vagina: puberty, childbearing, and menopause are all milestone events that have an effect on sexual function, laxity, and appearance. These changes can, in turn, have a powerful impact on sexual pleasure, physical comfort, and self-esteem. As genital cosmetic procedures have become more widely available, it is no surprise that more people are attempting to reclaim their sexual well-being through surgical solutions. 

##**Vaginal Rejuvenation Is on the Rise** 

Statistics show that over the last five years, trends in genital cosmetic surgeries have increased in popularity. Labiaplasty, the reduction of the labia minora, reached peak popularity in the United States in 2016, according to the [American Society of Plastic Surgeons](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/documents/News/Statistics/2016/plastic-surgery-statistics-full-report-2016.pdf). Vaginal rejuvenation, which describes a number of different procedures that enhance either the appearance or the function of the vagina, followed shortly after. Since 2016, vaginal rejuvenation procedures have seen a 22 percent increase globally – the largest increase of any cosmetic procedure over the past three years.

As genital surgeries soar in popularity, the advent of minimally-invasive treatments, including laser and radiofrequency tightening, have only expanded the ever-growing menu of vaginal rejuvenation options. As more people seek out vaginal rejuvenation, the need to define complex terms and reinforce clear medical information has become more important. Rejuvenation is a term that evokes a sense of well-being and restoration and plays a key role within the marketing strategy of rejuvenation procedures.

##**The Different Types of Vaginal Rejuvenation Is and Who It Is For** 

We spoke with [Ryan Stanton, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/ryan-stanton-md-644), a board certified plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, to get to the bottom of the conversation.

** The AEDITION**: *What is vaginal rejuvenation?*

**Dr. Stanton:** [Vaginal rejuvenation](https://aedit.com/procedure/vaginal-rejuvenation-with-laser-energy), sometimes referred to as Vaginal Reconstruction when done for functional medical reasons, can include a whole host of procedures – most commonly [vaginoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/vaginoplasty) and/or Perineoplasty. 

Vaginoplasty surgery is specifically performed to tighten the vaginal canal. It is sometimes referred to as a colporrhaphy, when it is done for medical functional reasons to strengthen the vaginal walls. Once the amount of tightening to be done is determined, a pie-shape wedge is marked to delineate the extra skin to be removed from inside the vagina. Beneath the skin, the tissues are tightened with strong sutures. Once the vaginal canal has been tightened, the mucosal skin is sutured closed. If there is external skin that protrudes, this can be reduced as well for a more aesthetic result.

[Perineoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/perineoplasty), on the other hand, is a procedure to tighten and support the opening (not canal) of the vagina, especially as it relates to the supportive network. This area is frequently damaged either by an episiotomy cut or a tear during a difficult vaginal childbirth delivery. A perineoplasty procedure involves removing any scarred tissue from this area and suturing back together the connective tissue network to recreate a supportive and snug vaginal opening.

**The AEDITION**: *Are non-surgical procedures as effective as surgery when it comes to vaginal rejuvenation?*

**Dr. Stanton**: The various lasers or infrared devices marketed as new minimally-invasive procedures with no pain or downtime to tighten the vagina are somewhat effective to a mild degree and on a limited patient population. They usually require a series of treatments up front and ongoing interval treatments to maintain the results. 

They work by pulsing energy into the collagen layer of the vaginal mucosa, where concentrated thermal heating leads to swelling and some degree of collagen 'shrinkage' and secondary regeneration, producing increased resiliency of the vaginal canal. Tightening may also occur along the base of the overlying bladder, with evidence showing that it may also improve minor urinary incontinence. This is all true with one important and common exception regarding patients seeking tightening and incontinence repair: if the vaginal canal and/or perineum tissues have been mechanically damaged by vaginal childbirth, then these minimally-invasive procedures will more than likely not do the trick and surgery is the only real solution.

**The AEDITION**: *Who are the best candidates for non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments?*

**Dr. Stanton**: The best candidates for [minimally invasive treatments](https://aedit.com/aedition/8-cosmetic-procedures-you-havent-heard-of) include:

- Women who have never had a vaginal childbirth but still feel they may be abnormally large or "loose" inside or may have a partner with a smaller-sized penis.
- Women with laxity after vaginal childbirth who plan on having more children but don't want vaginal tightening until after their final childbirth, at which time they may elect to undergo a permanent surgical tightening procedure.
- Women with mild urinary incontinence.
- Women with only modest vaginal laxity who wish to avoid a surgical procedure.
- Post-menopausal women with dry vaginal tissues who have not responded adequately to hormone replacement therapy.

**The AEDITION**: *Who are the best candidates for vaginal rejuvenation surgery?*

**Dr. Stanton**: The best candidates for surgical options include:

- Women with significant pelvic floor vaginal laxity involving significant widening and muscular separation from multiple vaginal deliveries, a history of vaginal tear and/or an episiotomy during delivery.
- Women with significant urinary incontinence and/or prolapse of the bladder, rectum, or vagina. These women need a surgical repair and a bladder “sling” procedure for those with incontinence.

**The AEDITION**: *How long after a vaginal rejuvenation procedure should a patient wait to resume work, exercise, and sexual activity?*

**Dr. Stanton**: Patients may resume nearly all activities including sex as soon as a couple days following the minimally invasive procedures. However, patients will want to take at least a full week off of work, three to four weeks from exercise, and six weeks from sexual activity following the standard surgical interventions. 

**The AEDITION**: *Do you have any other pre/post-surgery advice for patients to help ensure a smooth rejuvenation process?*

**Dr. Stanton**: Like any medical procedure or surgery, make sure you are going to a reputable physician who you can trust and have good chemistry with. One who explains all the pre-op and post-operative instructions as well as potential risks and complications. Also, it is imperative that the patient follow these instructions to the T.  

##**The Cost of Vaginal Rejuvenation** 

In addition to the physical qualifications for each of the procedures detailed above, an important factor for vaginal rejuvenation candidates to consider is cost. Fortunately, vaginal rejuvenation spans a wide price spectrum. On average, vaginoplasty costs $5,475 and perineoplasty costs $4,150. As for minimally invasive treatments, vaginal rejuvenation with laser energy can cost anywhere between $1,500 to $4,500 and radiofrequency treatment can cost anywhere between $800 to $1,200 per treatment. 

##**A Patient’s Perspective on Vaginal Rejuvenation**
