*I feel my temperature rising.* Not just the opening lyrics to Elivs Presley’s 1972 classic “Burning Love,” it is also how I feel all summer in New York City as the rising mercury and dew point leave my complexion anywhere from a little too dewy to straight up drenched in sweat. The result? The makeup I carefully applied to yield a subtle, summery glow looks shiny and smudged not long after leaving the cool confines of my apartment.

While I might not be venturing into the sweltering subterranean subway as often this summer, COVID-19 face coverings provide a new challenge for keeping makeup and skin looking fresh during the warm weather months. To combat the shine-inducing side effects of summer’s steamy temps, I knew I needed to call an expert — in the form of Urban Decay global makeup artist [Steve Kassajikian](https://www.instagram.com/udstevek/?hl=en) — for advice.

## **Summer Makeup Made Simple**
“Summer is about looking really fresh and glowy,” Kassajikian tells me over email, unknowingly confirming that he fully understands my ideal aesthetic and, hopefully, how to maintain it for longer than a New York minute. As he describes it, some of the simplest and most versatile summer makeup looks involve: 
 
- Natural skin
- Bushy, feathered brows
- Warmer tones on the eyes and cheeks
- Bold lashes

With that in mind, Kassajikian shares three pro tips for keeping your makeup in place and skin naturally radiant all summer long.

### **1. Set Yourself Up for Success**
Longwear makeup tends to leave my skin a bit more matte than I would like for the summertime, but Kassajikian offers a couple ways to extend the lifespan of any complexion product without an overly dry or mattifying result:
 
- Mix a pump of your face primer into your foundation to ensure long wear
- Wet your beauty sponge with setting spray when applying foundation

Bonus points if you still apply a primer *before* foundation and setting spray on top. Just because I am concerned about radiance veering into shiny/sweaty territory doesn't mean I can’t still add a bit of (strategic) luminosity to my look, Kassajikian says. “Prep the skin with a beauty oil before applying foundation to hydrate and make the skin look luminous,” he explains, adding that the [Drop Shot Oil](https://www.urbandecay.com/drop-shot-facial-oil-urban-decay/ud882.html) by Urban Decay works particularly well because it’s specifically formulated to complement foundation. 

While the oil trick will provide an all-over glow, Kassajikian also has a tip for making key parts of the face shine bright like a diamond — in a good way. ### **3. Don’t Be Afraid to Touch Up**
Truth be told, there is no surefire way to keep makeup in place all day, but there are plenty of ways to touch it up without messing it up. Summer is here! While we welcome the warmth and sunshine, we have a love/hate relationship with the heat and humidity. Are you with us? When it comes to your skin, it’s important to adjust your skincare regimen to the temperature and humidity change in order to keep it hydrated, glowing (read: not sweaty or shiny), and protected. 

“The biggest skincare goals for summer are to prevent collagen damage from UV rays and to focus on lightening and brightening the skin,” says [Adriana Lombardi, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/adriana-lombardi-md-12670), a board certified dermatologist and founder of Skin Cancer and Cosmetic Surgery Center of New Jersey.

With those ideals in mind, we asked Dr. Lombardi and Ron Robinson, a cosmetic chemist and founder of [BeautyStat](https://www.beautystat.com/), to name their must-have skincare ingredients for summer and provide tips on how to use them.

### **1. Zinc Oxide**

**The Skinny**: Zinc oxide is the most popular mineral sunscreen ingredient because it physically blocks harmful UVA and UVB rays. “Mineral SPFs are having a moment,” Robinson says. “Studies done on chemical sunscreens show that they can absorb into your bloodstream and that they aren’t safe for coral reefs.”   
**How to Use It**: The general rule of thumb is to apply a shot glass (about two ounces) worth of sunscreen to each area of your body that’s exposed to the sun. As we covered extensively in our [SPF report](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-apply-sunscreen-and-not-miss-a-spot), most people don’t use enough. Opt for an SPF of 30 or higher and don’t forget to reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming. ### **2. Vitamin C**

**The Skinny**: Sun exposure leads to hyperpigmentation and collagen damage. [Vitamin C](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-topical-vitamin-c-in-skincare) is a powerful antioxidant that both inhibits the enzyme that produces melanin in the skin and stimulates collagen to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. “Vitamin C should be in your regimen all year, but it’s especially important during the summer months,” Dr. Lombardi shares. “It helps to brighten and lighten the skin.”
**How to Use It**:  Dr. Lombardi recommends using it twice per day. **The Skinny**: “[Hyaluronic acid](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-hyaluronic-acid-in-skincare-dermal-filler) is a powerhouse ingredient for attracting moisture to the skin,” explains Robinson. “It’s a good ingredient to have in your regimen all year round, but is great for summertime because it’s not as heavy as oils and butters and gets the job done.” The humectant is known to retain over 1,000 times its weight in water and won’t clog your pores.
**How to Use It**:  Look for a serum or lightweight moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid. If you choose the serum route, apply it twice a day after cleansing but before moisturizing.
 
### **4. Alpha Hydroxy Acids**

**The Skinny**: [Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-topical-alpha-hydroxy-acids-in-skincare) are a class of ingredients known to gently exfoliate the top layer of your skin on a chemical level. They include glycolic, lactic, and citric acids (to name a few). “I recommend using an AHA like glycolic acid during the summer months because it will peel away dead skin cells from the surface without over-drying the skin,” Dr. Lombardi explains.

## **One More Thing...**
You may be wondering: What about [retinol](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-vitamin-a-retinol-retinoids-in-skincare)? It’s a valid question. Because retinol is an aggressive exfoliant, it makes your skin more sensitized to the sun.  If the powerhouse ingredient has been part of your regimen for a while, continue to use it instead of AHAs — though you may want to scale back your routine to a couple of days a week and load up on sunscreen (even more than you usually would) on the mornings after use. 4 Ingredients To Add To Your Skincare Routine This Summer

Summertime and living is easy? Well, not if you’re prone to pimples, as many can attest. While summer brings with it longer days and more time outdoors (hello, beautiful sunshine!) it also comes with sweat, humidity, and the oh-so-dreaded breakouts. Experiencing a higher level of acne breakouts during the summer is extremely common on both the face *and* the body. While the flare ups are undoubtedly annoying, it is also very treatable. Since June is [Acne Awareness Month](https://aedit.com/aedition/category/acne) – and the official start of summer – The AEDITION spoke with leading dermatologists for tips on how to treat and prevent summer breakouts from head to toe. 

## **What Causes Acne Flare Ups in the Summer?** 
“Heat and humidity cause increased sweat and oil production in the skin leading to clogged pores and increased breakouts,” says [Morgan Rabach, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/morgan-rabach-md-17913), a New York City-based board certified cosmetic dermatologist. While the culprits behind those comedones and cysts are primarily rising temperatures mixed with humidity, your skincare routine may not be helping matters. “The use of winter skincare, such as oil-based emollients, can be too thick for summer months,” explains board certified dermatologist [Amy Spizuoco, DO](https://aedit.com/provider/amy-spizuoco-19341). 

## **Treating Acne In The Summer** 
Don’t let this trifecta of heat, humidity, and occlusive beauty products undermine your lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer (while [lathered in sunscreen](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-apply-sunscreen-and-not-miss-a-spot), of course). Here are five ways to beat summer breakouts. 

### **1. Change Your Skincare**
Just like you put your turtlenecks and sweaters away for the summer, you should move your winter skincare routine into semi-retirement. “You should use lighter, water-based ‘lotions,’ not oil-based ‘creams,’” Dr. Spizuoco says. Humectants like [hyaluronic acid (HA)](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-hyaluronic-acid-in-skincare-dermal-filler), for example, offer hydration without the risk of clogging pore — especially when paired with clarifying products.

Dr. Rabach suggests using a cleanser with salicylic acid (we’re fans of the [La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser](https://www.ulta.com/effaclar-medicated-gel-cleanser-acne-prone-skin?productId=xlsImpprod11241001)) to break down impurities followed by a toner (like [Glossier Solution](https://www.glossier.com/products/solution))  to dry up oil. Gentle-yet-effective exfoliating products are also key. “Exfoliators with alpha and beta hydroxy acids and retinoids can help,” she says. [Retinol](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-vitamin-a-retinol-retinoids-in-skincare), one of the most common forms of vitamin A, increases cell turnover and decreases the likelihood of acne (in addition to treating fine lines and wrinkles), but it can increase sensitivity to the sun. If you’ve never used a retinol before, consider waiting until fall to introduce and try [AHAs and BHAs](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-topical-alpha-hydroxy-acids-in-skincare) instead. 

When it comes to applying both the morning and evening skincare routines, layer your products by their weight starting with the lightest (toners and serums) and building up to the heaviest (lotions and sunscreen) before proceeding to makeup. 

### **2. Swap Out Your Sunscreen**
Speaking of sunscreen, it’s a non-negotiable. But, for those with acne-prone skin, the idea of slathering on a greasy SPF sounds anything but enjoyable. Dr. Spizuoco suggests using an oil-free sunscreen (try [Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40](https://supergoop.com/products/unseen-sunscreen)) and washing your face, chest, and back more frequently to prevent breakouts. Powder-based sunscreen formulas, like the [Brush On Block Translucent Mineral Powder Sunscreen](https://brushonblock.com/collections/order-brush-on-block/products/brush-on-block), can also provide a lightweight option for touching up (and mattifying!) the skin.

### **3. Update Your Makeup Routine** 
We recommend approaching your [aesthetic needs by season](https://aedit.com/aedition/invasive-plastic-surgery-non-invasive-cosmetic-procedures-for-summer), and beauty products are no exception. “Mineral makeup is best to prevent breakouts,” Dr. Spizuoco says, adding that you should avoid using “heavy, thick products” during the warm-weather months. High quality mineral makeup ([bareMinerals](https://www.bareminerals.com/), [Jane Iredale](https://janeiredale.com), and [PÜR](https://www.purcosmetics.com) to name a few) is usually free of oil, fragrance, wax, and other additives that clog pores. As for the products to avoid, steer clear of any ingredient that might cause irritation such as fragrance, emollients, and sulfates, which will only further aggravate the skin.

### **4. Drink More Water** 
It may seem counterintuitive, but oily skin does not equate to hydrated skin. In fact, dehydration can lead to increased oil production and, in turn, more breakouts. From a dry scalp to flaky knees, the water intake — or lack thereof — shows up on the skin. Staying hydrated is a requirement year-round, but increased sweating in the summertime makes compliance particularly important.

### **5. Don’t Forget Your Body** 
Summer breakouts aren’t limited to your face, and there are plenty of products available to help treat body acne. “Fruit enzyme and salicylic acid washes can help keep pores from getting clogged,” Dr. Spizuoco shares. Chest and back acne are normal and can often be treated with exfoliating bodycare ([AmLactin](https://amlactin.com/), [Clinique](https://www.sephora.com/product/acne-solutions-cleansing-face-body-soap-P196524), [Herbivore](https://www.herbivorebotanicals.com/collections/body-1/products/soap-trio), and [Paula’s Choice](https://www.paulaschoice.com/clear-acne-body-spray/624.html) are great over-the-counter options) and more frequent showers. If the condition proves more difficult to treat, “oral antibiotics prescribed under the care of a board certified dermatologist” will likely do the trick, Dr. Rabach says.

## **How To Prevent Summer Breakouts**
It’s far easier to prevent breakouts than it is to treat them, so Dr. Spizuoco recommends having a plan of attack to help the skin adjust just in time for summer’s heat and humidity. “Avoid using products with fragrances,” she explains. Though [aromatic beauty products](https://aedit.com/aedition/fragrance-free-beauty-skincare-for-sensitive-skin) sound lovely, the added fragrance can cause rashes, itchiness, and hives. Changing out of sweaty clothes as soon as possible is a good way to prevent body acne, as is finding the right balance between keeping the skin clean and overwashing. Too much cleansing can be counterproductive. “Avoid exfoliating too often, which can lead to [mechanical acne](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-acne-caused-by-covid-19-masks-face-coverings) caused by friction and irritation,” explains Dr. Spizuoco. “Keep skin hydrated but not overly moist.”   

## **The Takeaway**
An increase in oil production and sweat during the summer causes clogged pores that need to be treated differently than how they would be during the cold, dry months. Taking a more seasonal approach to both your beauty and skincare routines, cleansing often, and staying hydrated are just a few of the ways to keep skin clear and radiant year-round. So many of us have a love/hate relationship with summer. We relish the idea of long, lazy days in the sun, but we’re reluctant to bare too much skin for reasons ranging from [premature aging](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-procedures-treatments-to-correct-sun-damage) and [skin cancer concerns](https://aedit.com/aedition/category/skin-cancer) to feeling self-conscious in our swimwear. When it comes to cosmetic procedures, summer sun can have adverse effects on results — but not everything is off limits. In fact, summer can be the ideal time to touch up minimally invasive treatments, schedule invasive surgeries that require prolonged downtime, or start planning ahead for fall.

With much of the country emerging from [COVID-19 stay-at-home orders](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-plastic-surgeons-and-cosmetic-surgery-patients-are-coping-with-covid-19), many states have given the green light for both aesthetic treatments and elective surgery. Below are some of the best invasive and non-invasive procedures to consider in the summertime.

## **Summertime Cosmetic Surgery**
For some, summer can be an ideal time to schedule a cosmetic surgery procedure. Anyone who’s on a break from work or school or who has vacation time to spare can take advantage of the seasonal slow down and recover on the down low. This is true for moms, too. “With kids out of school, moms find that there is a little more flexibility in their schedules, since they are not running around doing pick up, drop off, and after school activities,” [Lisa Jewell, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/lisa-jewell-md-814), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon at South Bay Plastic Surgeons in Torrance, California. “Everyone's schedule seems to open up a bit.” 

### **1. Breast Augmentation** 
In her practice, [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-really-like-to-get-breast-implants) is the most popular summertime surgical procedure, as patients can enjoy their results relatively soon post-op. “Our highly skilled surgeons use a variety of techniques in order to minimize recovery, so patients look and feel great very quickly after surgery,” she says.

### **2. Liposuction**
[Liposuction](https://aedit.com/aedition/high-definition-liposuction-techniques-for-body-contouring) is also sought after this season, with patients seeking to address fat pockets resistant to diet and exercise. “Liposuction has minimal downtime and you can return to most things within a couple days,” Dr. Jewell explains. Bruising and soreness is typical, but generally subside in a few weeks. “While it can take months for patients to see their final result from liposuction due to swelling, patients will notice an immediate change after surgery — and it only continues to get better,” she says. “The incisions are also very small and easily hidden when at the beach.”

### **3. Rhinoplasty**

### **4. Body Contouring**

Summer is here. We look forward to it all year and with those long vacations as well as summer Fridays, it can be the perfect time to fit some cosmetic treatments into our busy schedules.But before you book, there are certain procedures you should avoid this time of year. Some treatments can cause sensitivity to sunlight and the higher temperatures can actually delay the healing process in some others. Steer clear of these five treatments and with anything else, check with your provider before undergoing any cosmetic treatment.

## **1. Chemical Peels**

[Chemical peels](https://aedit.com/procedure/medium-depth-chemical-peels) remove the dead layers of skin cells to improve the skin’s overall appearance. In other words, they're really powerful exfoliants. Typically, a board certified dermatologist will apply a chemical solution tailored to the needs to your face. Next, the top layer of the skin will shed off, revealing a new layer underneath. As a result, patients will have fresher and smoother-looking skin within a quick span of time. Chemical peels are ideal for those who suffer from acne scars, sun spots, discoloration, and general signs of aging.  

While that sounds great, why shouldn't you get one during the summer? According to board certified dermatologist [Cheryl Karcher, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/cheryl-karcher-md-4323), “a chemical peel removes the dead skin of your epidermis or outer layer of skin, which makes the skin underneath more sensitive to the sun. [Sun exposure](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-you-need-to-know-about-sunscreen) can cause hyperpigmentation and can take many months to go away.” 

After a [light chemical peel](https://aedit.com/procedure/superficial-chemical-peels), the skin will flake on days three and four and Dr. Karcher suggests not going into the sun for at least two weeks. After that, she advises patients to wear an SPF with a minimum of 50 every day. We understand though that sometimes you just need to get a chemical peel during the summer. If that is the case, there are a few precautions you can take. First, apply sunscreen liberally throughout the day and try to avoid the sun when possible. Keep in mind that you can burn at all hours of the day, even when you think you are protected by clouds or the windows of your car. Second, assuming you work an office job, try to book your treatment earlier in the week. That way, when the weekend comes around, your skin will not be as sensitive. Lastly, consider opting for a “light” rather than a “deep” chemical peel. A light chemical peel only removes the most superficial layer of skin, unlike a [deep chemical peel](https://aedit.com/procedure/deep-chemical-peels) that removes the mid and lower layer of skin cells as well. Because a light chemical peel is much less powerful, it has a shorter downtime period, meaning you can enjoy the sun sooner. On the flip side, it does require more maintenance.

## **2. Laser Hair Removal**

[Laser hair removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-hair-removal) is a great option for those looking to remove unwanted hair. Not having to shave or worry about unwanted hair can be really life-changing, but there are certain times of year that are better than others for undergoing laser hair removal. The treatment works by pulsating highly concentrated light deep into the skin, which the hair’s pigment absorbs. This heat kills the hair follicle and prevents further hair growth. The laser responds to pigment, so having a stronger contrast between the skin and hair color yields higher results.

This is exactly why it's not ideal for summer months: sun exposure can negatively affect the procedure’s efficacy. People have more tanned, freckled, or even sunburnt skin during the summer months and, as a result, the laser may not work as well. “The laser is carefully calibrated to deliver energy to the hair and not the surrounding skin," says Dr. Karcher. "However, if there is another pigment present in the skin from sun exposure, that will be picked up by the laser too. This can result in unwanted lightening or darkening of the skin." Sun exposure after the laser treatments can cause darkening as well, since skin that's been treated with a laser is more sensitive. 

Sunburns can result in skin damage and discoloration, which will cost even more money to correct. Dr. Karcher recommends patients avoid the sun for at least two weeks before after laser hair removal or only undergo treatment on areas that are not exposed to the sun, like the underarms. 

## **3. Prescription Retinoids**

Retinoids are a helpful skincare solution to many common problems like acne, warts, fine lines, and psoriasis. While these vitamin A derivatives are quite effective, they commonly irritate your skin, make it more sensitive to sunlight, and can cause sun damage. “If any skin irritation is present, you should avoid the sun due to potential hyperpigmentation, or darkening of the skin,” Dr. Karcher explains. 

As a result, it is recommended that people go lighter on prescription retinoids (Retin A) over the summer or choose over-the-counter versions (retinols), which have a lower concentration of retinoic acid. It is suggested that people using retinoids avoid the sun as much as possible and take sun protection seriously. This includes applying sunscreen liberally, choosing a sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher, wearing protective clothing, and applying moisturizer to prevent excessive dryness. 

## **4. Sclerotherapy**

[Sclerotherapy](https://aedit.com/procedure/sclerotherapy) is a cosmetic procedure that eliminates unwanted varicose and spider veins. The treatment involves injecting a solution into the vein that will cause the lining of the blood vessel to collapse. 

It sounds ideal for swimsuit season, but after the procedure, many patients experience physical side effects that they may not want to show during the summer months. For instance, the veins can become lumpy and more prominent for a few months before they dissolve and fade away. Additionally, discoloration in the form of spotting and ruptured blood vessels can appear and take several months to fade. 

Board certified plastic surgeon [David Rapaport, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/david-rapaport-md-139) explains that because sclerotherapy involves stimulating a blood clot inside the vein, there can be bruising within the veins for over six weeks. “It is possible to have the patient come back approximately 10 days after Sclerotherapy to literally puncture the treated veins and squeeze the blood out,” Dr. Rapaport says. “Nonetheless, there is a real possibility of bruising lasting for up to six weeks following the treatment."

While discoloration and scarring are part of most procedures, sclerotherapy also requires patients to wear compression hosiery for about a week. They are worn to reduce bruising caused by the injections and to keep the veins compressed while they recover from the procedure. While they are not worn for too long, the compression stockings can be hot and uncomfortable, especially during the summer months. 

## **5. Liposuction**

[Liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/tumescent-liposuction) is one of the most effective ways to get rid of unwanted fat cells. While patients do see immediate results with liposuction compared to other body contouring procedures, they may not be able to show it off for several weeks. [Liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/radiofrequency-assisted-liposuction) requires patients to wear support bandages afterward, which can be a nuisance during the summer months. While it depends on the patient and the area being treated, the compression bandage can be necessary for up to a few weeks depending on how long it takes for the swelling to fully subside. 

Dr. Rapaport explains that areas higher up on the body heal faster. “Specifically, the submental or neck area tends to heal faster than areas that are lower on the body,” he says. “It is unusual to have swelling beyond three or so days following neck liposuction.” With that in mind, patients may want to book their appointments before summer to ensure that they will be ready to show off their new body.

5 Cosmetic Treatments To Avoid During The Summer

The winter months are perfect for hibernation, but once the warm weather hits, our social calendars start picking up again. Summer is the peak season for social engagements like weekend BBQs and weddings. While there are a number of cosmetic procedures that are not recommended during the summertime (mostly because they can cause sensitivity to sun exposure), there are five treatments we highly recommend to put your best foot forward.

## **Body Sculpting**

Body sculpting, also known as body contouring and body shaping, is a treatment that removes fat deposits under the skin. There are many types of treatments that fall under the body sculpting umbrella, but some are more invasive than others. For instance, liposuction is a surgical procedure that permanently removes fat cells and has a longer downtime. Because of its invasive nature, [liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/liposculpture) often requires patients to wear a compression bandage for several weeks to aid the healing process. Fortunately, there are other body sculpting alternatives that will allow you to bounce back quicker and squeeze in more beach time.

Non-surgical body sculpting treatments include technologies like [CoolSculpting®](https://aedit.com/procedure/cool-sculpting), [SculpSure®](https://aedit.com/procedure/sculpsure), and UltraShape®. Instead of surgically removing the fat, they work by freezing fat cells or administering intense heat by means of ultrasound or radiofrequency. “Many patients do a combination of both the fat reducing and skin tightening modalities to hit both issues to improve body sculpting for the summer,” board certified plastic surgeon [Roger Tsai, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/roger-tsai-md-556), shares. “As far as which is better than the other, they are all fairly comparable and will depend on each person's individual goals.” 

It is important to keep in mind that the treatments can take 12 to 16 weeks to see full results and that results will be significant but not as strong as a surgical procedure like liposuction. So make sure to plan ahead – you won't see overnight results.

For non-invasive body sculpting treatments, it can take at least two to three treatments to get the desired results. “Although there is significantly less downtime and patients can go back to normal activities right away, it is not quite as powerful and sometimes takes longer to get the desired results due to the number of treatments it takes to get there,” Dr. Tsai explains. “If the surgical route is performed, this will provide the most powerful sculpting and is done in one shot. However, depending on what is actually performed, it could take one to three months for the body to heal.”

## **Dermal Fillers**

Unlike a lot of other facial treatments, like [chemical peels](https://aedit.com/procedure/medium-depth-chemical-peels), injectables do not have negative interactions with the harsh summer sun, making it a perfect treatment for summertime. [Injectable dermal fillers](https://aedit.com/procedure/cheek-augmentation-with-fillers) are soft tissue fillers that restore volume and smooth out fine lines. They work quickly to reduce signs of aging and have minimal downtime, and last anywhere from six months to two years. Which means you can get back to your summertime activities in no time. 

Board certified dermatologist [Cheryl Karcher, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/cheryl-karcher-md-4323), recommends dermal filler during the summer because it does not matter if you are exposed to the sun or not. “Filling up a little hollowing [under the eyes](https://aedit.com/procedure/under-eye-filler) can make one look very refreshed for the summer,” Dr. Karcher says. “Putting a little [filler](https://aedit.com/procedure/temporary-lip-fillers) where the lips turn down can make one look refreshed and happy.”  

There are many types of dermal fillers, but the most common include hyaluronic acid (e.g. Juvéderm®, Belotero® or Restylane®), collagen, calcium hydroxylapatite (e.g. Radiesse®), and PPLA (e.g. Sculptra®). Dr. Karcher recommends any of them for use during the summer. 

## **Botox®**

Similar to [dermal fillers](https://aedit.com/procedure/liquid-facelift), [Botox®](https://aedit.com/procedure/botox-facial) is another non-invasive way to smooth out unwanted facial lines and wrinkles. Botox® is a brand name for the generic drug botulinum toxin, which works by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles. 

In addition to reducing signs of aging, it can also slim out the face, making it the perfect alternative to more invasive facial slimming procedures.
