## **1. It’s Not Just One Procedure**
First things first, the term ‘vaginal rejuvenation’ doesn’t refer to any one thing. “Vaginal rejuvenation is really a combination of vulva rejuvenation along with vaginal rejuvenation,” Dr. Rajagopal explains. Translation: there are options. We break them down below:

### **Surgical Solutions**
- **Labiaplasty**: “To improve the aesthetic appearance of the labia minora and labia majora, we offer a [labiaplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/labiaplasty),” she shares. The surgical procedure can benefit those experiencing discomfort during exercise, urinary tract infections, painful intercourse, and other physical activity. The surgery can be performed alone or as part of a [mommy makeover](https://aedit.com/concern/mommy-makeover).
- **Monsplasty**: For those who have excess skin and/or fat in their upper pubic area that is impacting their quality of life, Dr. Rajagopal recommends [monsplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/monsplasty) (a.k.a. mons pubis reduction or pubic lift). It can involve liposuction (to remove fat), surgical excision (to remove skin), or a combination of the two. 

### **Non-Surgical Solutions**
- **Emsella®**: “[Emsella®](https://bodybybtl.com/solutions/btl-emsella/) consists of high-intensity focused electromagnetic stimulation (HIFEM) that is similar to MRI magnetic technology,” Dr. Rajagopal explains. “It stimulates and enhances the function of the pelvic floor muscles.” She says the treatment is ideal for those experiencing urinary incontinence and/or an inability to achieve strong orgasms. The non-invasive treatment (you sit on a chair-like device that stimulates the muscles) calls for six 30-minute sessions in a three-week span.
- **Botox**: Yes, you read that right, Botox for vaginal health. The neurotoxin is used off-label for the treatment of [vaginismus](https://aedit.com/aedition/botox-injections-for-vaginismus), a medical condition that causes involuntary vaginal muscle spasms that can make inserting tampons and penetrative sex painful —  if not impossible. Botox is injected into the bulbospongiosus muscle (i.e. the muscle that surrounds the opening of the vagina) to relax it and relieve the spasms.
- **Infini™ RF**: If a surgical labiaplasty isn’t for you, Dr. Rajagopal says “you can also have just a labia majora reduction with [Infini™ RF](https://aedit.com/procedure/infini-rf).” When used on the vulva, the RF microneedling treatment can firm the tissue of the labia majora to enhance its appearance and even tighten the vaginal canal after natural childbirth. “We call it a vagi-facial,” she notes.
- **Laser Therapy**: Dr. Rajagopal uses [FemiLift®](https://almainc.com/products/femilift), a fractional C02 laser, to treat patients with vaginal dryness due to age and vaginal atrophy (a condition that can cause painful intercourse). The [intravaginal laser](https://aedit.com/procedure/vaginal-rejuvenation-with-laser-energy) is inserted into the vaginal canal (she assures us the treatment is much more tolerable than it sounds). Some patients enjoy the benefits after the first appointment, but Dr. Rajagopal recommends three sessions in three months for best results. 
- **PRP**: To improve pleasure, the so-called [O-Shot](https://aedit.com/procedure/oshot) injects platelet-rich plasma (PRP) into numbed areas of the vagina, clitoris, and labia to heighten orgasms and improve sexual wellness. For some, the effects are immediate, while an initial series of treatments may be needed for others. Results can last three to six months.

## **2. It’s Highly Customizable**
The vulva is made up of multiple organs – including the vagina – and just about all of them can be addressed. While vaginal rejuvenation is often talked about in relation to childbirth, hormonal changes, genetics, and even stress can impact both the form and function of the genital area. “There can be functional issues that may interfere with her lifestyle and how much pleasure she gets out of sex,” Dr. Rajagopal shares. “There can also be aesthetic issues that she may want to address and that’s what we offer.” 

Many of the procedures listed above can be combined to create a treatment plan that best addresses a patient’s unique anatomy and goals. Consulting with a board certified plastic surgeon or gynecologist who specializes in vulva rejuvenation is the best way to learn more about your options.

## **3. Candidates Vary** 
As with any procedure, those interested in vaginal rejuvenation should consult with their provider to ensure their preferred procedure(s) is right for them. As we mentioned, treatments that address vaginal health and appearance aren't one-size-fits-all, nor should they be. “With each treatment, we have an examination first to see who is a viable candidate,” Dr. Rajagopal explains. Topics such as medical history and overall health and wellness should also be discussed during the examination process. Women may also want to consider whether or not they are planning to have children or want to further expand their family. While some of these solutions treat sexual health concerns, others have the ability to be impacted or undone by pregnancy or childbirth.

## **4. Sensitivity Can Be Compromised** 
Although it’s uncommon, a decrease in sensation is always possible after cosmetic procedures – and vaginal rejuvenation is no exception. There is no surefire way to prevent this, though cosmetic gynecology performed by a highly skilled provider who specializes in the practice is the best way to ensure a safe and effective outcome. Recovering from surgery is a bit more involved. Depending on the procedure, a few days to a week of downtime may be needed. Side effects of most vaginal rejuvenation surgeries include swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Infection is a greater risk due to the nature of the area, so practicing good hygiene after surgery is key. Pregnancy causes many changes to the body, some which reverse naturally and others that require a little extra help. If you wish to achieve your pre-baby body or sculpt and contour your new physique, a [mommy makeover](https://aedit.com/concern/mommy-makeover) may be the ultimate amalgamation of procedures to do just that.

The term ‘mommy makeover’ is a catch-all for correcting any changes to a woman's body after childbirth, says [Lauren Chmielewski, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/lauren-chmielewski-md-143), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York City. A traditional mommy makeover typically involves a tummy tuck, liposuction, and breast surgery (breast augmentation, breast lift, or [both](https://aedit.com/aedition/combining-breast-augmentation-with-breast-lift)). Yet, today's mommy makeovers are more inclusive than ever. More women are opting to add [additional procedures](https://aedit.com/procedure/mommy-makeover-solutions) that include fat transfer to the breasts, vaginal rejuvenation, Brazilian butt lifts (as is found in the so-called ‘[hourglass mommy makeover](https://aedit.com/aedition/hourglass-mommy-makeover-with-bbl)’), and even arm and thigh lifts.

Just as important as finding a qualified plastic surgeon who can achieve the results you're after is to understand (yourself) the ins and outs of the highly involved surgery and what the recovery entails. Although most mommy makeover patients are thrilled with the outcome, getting there is not always easy. Often, the [mommy makeover recovery process](https://aedit.com/aedition/mommy-makeover-recovery-healing-process) is downplayed – especially on social media. Therefore, patients need to have realistic expectations when it comes to the steps they need to take to achieve optimal outcomes, says [Gregory Buford, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/gregory-buford-md-1015), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Lone Tree, CO. “Proper healing requires planning and attention to detail, like attentive wound care, compression, restriction of various activities, and careful attention to what you eat,” he shares.

Generally speaking, three weeks of taking it very easy is recommended, but that’s not always feasible – particularly for moms with young children. The more time you can take to recuperate, however, the better, since bleeding, breakage of internal sutures, and the opening of wounds are possible if you try to do too much too soon, cautions [Mark G. Albert, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/mark-albert-md-77), an NYC-based board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon.

There's plenty to know about a mommy makeover that all too often flies under the radar. Here are 10 things to know before getting a mommy makeover.

## **1. Numbness Can Last Months, If Not Longer**
It's not uncommon for the skin to feel numb for months (even upwards of a year) after the [tummy tuck](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty) portion of a mommy makeover. It is a normal – albeit disconcerting – part of the overall [healing process](https://aedit.com/aedition/tummy-tuck-recovery-healing-process), and there's no need to worry about a lingering lack of feeling. It is related to trauma to the nerve endings and swelling. During an abdominoplasty, your surgeon lifts and removes excess skin to tighten the abdominal wall and muscles. “In doing this, we cut the small nerves to the skin, and it takes time for these nerves to grow back to the skin surface,” Dr. Albert says. As a result, there can be little or no feeling through the abdomen during the regrowth period. It's a waiting game as the nerves repair, reconnect, and regenerate independently.

Usually, this process takes a few months, and Dr. Albert says it is incredibly uncommon for someone to have permanent numbness after the procedure. “Any numbness generally subsides as the swelling goes away, which can take up to six to 12 months before completely returning to normal,” Dr. Chmielewski adds. However, some patients never regain 100 percent sensation, and some degree of numbness may always exist in the abdominal area. So, if you feel the urge to scratch an itch with little relief, that’s why. 

## **2. Walking – Even Around the House – Is Difficult at First**
Getting up and mindfully moving is essential in the first few days after a mommy makeover since gentle movement promotes circulation and proper blood flow. Dr. Chmielewski says walking helps lower the chance of developing a blood clot or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after surgery. Many plastic surgeons advise purchasing a walker (do this [before surgery](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-plastic-surgery-recovery-nurses-centers-products) and have it ready to go when you get home), since mobility is somewhat limited and the extra support is helpful. 

If you find it difficult or painful to stand upright, it is due to the newly created tightness in the core. Any discomfort is temporary. Some surgeons instruct their patients to walk hunched over with the help of a cane to prevent [unnecessary strain](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-reduce-tension-scarring-after-cosmetic-surgery) on the stomach incisions, which can force them open. But not every surgeon takes this approach nor agrees with it. “I find this unnecessary and believe it creates more back pain than one would have from the procedure alone,” Dr. Albert shares. “Therefore, I encourage my patients to sit and stand upright and be up and walking the day of the procedure.”

To make sure you keep moving, you’ll want to create a simple walking schedule and have a family member, friend, or partner make sure you stick to it. “Walking for 10 minutes every two hours while awake is a great way to ensure you’re getting enough movement in,” Dr. Chmielewski shares. As for when your movement will feel less encumbered, Dr. Buford says patients usually walk fully upright by week two or three.

## **3. The Shape & Position of the Breasts Will Evolve**
If you opt for [breast implants](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-implants) to correct deflation, decreased volume, or droopiness, don’t freak out if you don’t like how your new breasts look the first time you see them. Your first impression will not be your last. The breast implants usually sit very high on the chest [following a breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-implants). To help the implants settle into place, Dr. Buford recommends his patients wear a breast band and perform breast implant massages. This settling process (sometimes called ‘drop and fluff’) generally resolves over the coming months. 

It's also normal for the breasts to feel tight and swollen initially. But as the tissue stretches and relaxes and the implants soften up and descend the chest over the next few months, they begin to take their final shape and become more symmetrical and natural looking. “This is a completely normal part of breast augmentation with or without a breast lift,” Dr. Albert says.

## **4. An Electric Recliner Will Make Standing Up & Sitting Down Easier**
Post-mommy makeover, patients may find it cumbersome to get in and out of bed or a chair. That's why some plastic surgeons recommend recovering in an electric recliner, which makes sitting and standing much easier on the body. [Resting in a reclining position](https://aedit.com/aedition/sleeping-better-after-cosmetic-surgery-aesthetic-procedures) (you can sleep in one at night, too) helps take the pressure and strain off the abdominal wall, which is important since unnecessary stress or a pulling feeling can cause an incision to open.

If you don't have a recliner, you may want to purchase one or borrow one from a friend or family member. If an electric recliner is out of the question, consider using a wedge pillow for additional back support when sleeping or resting and use a small pad or lumbar support under the knees for extra support. ## **5. Your Plastic Surgeon Can Remove an Existing C-Section Scar**
If you delivered your baby via c-section, it's okay to have a mommy makeover once your doctor deems you ready for surgery. However, one of the most commonly asked questions among c-section patients is if a secondary scar is necessary. In most cases, creating a tummy tuck incision below an [existing c-section scar](https://aedit.com/aedition/invasive-non-invasive-procedures-to-fix-appearance-of-c-section-scar) (they're shorter and smaller than abdominoplasty scars) removes the original one. “Many patients have existing scars from previous procedures on the abdomen,” Dr. Chmielewski says. “So, depending on the operation, it is usually possible to have a tummy tuck and use these scars.”

There are some instances where you may not be able to trade a c-section scar for the [hip-to-hip tummy tuck scar](https://aedit.com/aedition/scarring-after-body-plastic-surgery), like if the c-section scar is too low. “When this is the case, it may not be possible to have the abdominoplasty scar placed below the C-section scar,” says [Adam Schaffner, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/adam-schaffner-md-33), a double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon in NYC. 

## **6. A Compression Garment Will Be Your New Favorite Accessory**
When you wake from surgery, you'll be wearing a tight-fitting [compression garment](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-compression-garments-after-cosmetic-surgery) in at least one area. Although it is uncomfortable, it helps limit swelling in the abdominal area and promotes healthy healing. Dr. Buford calls compression “a necessary evil,” adding that “it can mean the difference between an amazing result and a ho-hum outcome.” He also says that compression enhances local lymphatic drainage and reduces the risk of fluid collections ([seromas](https://aedit.com/aedition/risk-of-seroma-after-cosmetic-surgery)) beneath the skin.

Dr. Albert says that patients know that any compression will stop as soon as they remove the garment, and they will get swollen again. “Typically, patients use the compression garment I give them in the OR for about a week and then switch to a tighter compression garment as the swelling subsides,” he notes. Every plastic surgeon has their recommendation for the length of time that patients should wear compression garments, and most stay in one for at least the first six weeks post-procedure. Throughout that process, you can size down as [swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery) resolves to retain some degree of compression until you reach your final shape and size. If you do not wear a compression garment or have a manual [lymphatic drainage massage](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-lymphatic-drainage-massages-after-cosmetic-surgery) performed, it may lead to prolonged swelling.

## **7. Make Sure You Are Done Having Children**
While there is nothing stopping you from getting pregnant again after a mommy makeover, it certainly will [impact the results](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-pregnancy-affects-cosmetic-surgery-results). “The idea is to make your stomach as flat as possible and the skin as tight as possible, which can stretch again if one has another child,” Dr. Albert says. Dr. Chmielewski agrees and usually advises her patients to wait until they are finished having children to proceed with a mommy makeover. “Cosmetic surgery is an investment, and patients should be at or close to their goal weight for the results to be long-lasting and achieve the best results possible,” she says.

Moreover, getting pregnant following a mommy makeover may have implications on the way the body responds to pregnancy. “If a tummy tuck is performed in which the rectus muscles are tightened (plicated), a woman will likely feel a tighter sensation than prior pregnancies,” Dr. Schaffner says. “There is the theoretical risk of restricting the growth of the fetus.”

## **8. You’ll Need a Laxative (or two) to Get Things Moving Again**
A mommy makeover requires [anesthesia](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-anesthesia), and the trade-off for comfort during surgery is constipation in the days following it. For this reason, a laxative is a must for your post-recovery shopping list. Any over-the-counter laxative will do, but, if you’re taking one that you have never used before, it’s best to test it three to five days before your surgery to make sure your body responds well. This way, you can get an idea of how fast-acting it is and any potential side effects. Another way to ensure a smooth transition following surgery is to eat plenty of fiber-rich foods while recovering, which always helps make the bowel movement process a little easier.

## **9. Pay Attention to Your Diet During Recovery**
You are what you eat, especially when in recovery mode. The food you consume while at home recouping from a mommy makeover should be fiber-rich and anti-inflammatory to promote healing. Dr. Buford says surgical nutrition is where patients and many practitioners fall short. But, if you keep to a healthy and clean diet before surgery (along with regular workouts), your recovery will likely be easier and faster — and you'll feel pretty good, too.

Protein is also crucial for recovery. A diet that lacks enough protein may lead to poor wound healing and a lack of energy, Dr. Schaffner says. Steer clear of salty foods, which can cause unnecessary water retention. The same goes for soda and processed and fried foods. They offer no nutritional value, but these inflammatory foods can lead to prolonged swelling. ## **10. You May or May Not Need Drains**
For years, drains were one of the downsides of a tummy tuck. Patients don't like emptying them, and their removal can be uncomfortable. Today, not every plastic surgeon uses drains, and it all depends on your provider’s technique and preference. As Dr. Schaffner explains, progressive tension sutures minimize the need for drains. “We also use medications before and after surgery (such as gabapentin, Celebrex, and Tylenol) and during surgery (such as long-acting anesthetics) to [minimize the need for opioids/narcotics](https://aedit.com/aedition/opioid-free-plastic-surgery-pain-management) and shorten recovery times and minimize the development of complications,” he adds. Drainless tummy tucks make the recovery process a bit easier with [better scarring](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-reduce-tension-scarring-after-cosmetic-surgery), too.

They include breast surgery (either a [breast lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-lift-solutions), [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-solutions), or [both](https://aedit.com/aedition/combining-breast-augmentation-with-breast-lift)), liposuction to remove obstinate fat, and a [tummy tuck](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty) to delete excess skin and repair the abdominal muscles. “The hourglass mommy makeover, as well as a traditional mommy makeover, usually involve the aesthetic improvement of breasts, abdomen, and other areas affected by the weight fluctuations of pregnancy,” explains [John Layke, DO](https://aedit.com/provider/john-layke-645), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Beverly Hills and co-founder of [Beverly Hills MD](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fbeverlyhillsmd.com%2F). “It can also include the [thighs](https://aedit.com/concern/leg-shape-and-size), [arms](https://aedit.com/concern/arm-shape-and-size), and [neck](https://aedit.com/concern/neck-and-jawline-definition).” 

Of course, depending on a patient’s needs and wants, plastic surgeons can perform any combination of procedures. The goal is a body that resembles more of what it looked like pre-baby, and, for some women, a mommy makeover gives them the body of their dreams – even beyond what they had before having children.

When it comes to timing, it’s best to wait at least six months after childbirth before electing to undergo any cosmetic surgery. Also, most surgeons recommend not moving forward until you are [done breastfeeding](https://aedit.com/aedition/safety-of-cosmetic-procedures-during-pregnancy-breastfeeding), are close to your ideal weight, and have finished growing your family. These factors help to ensure the most optimal and lasting result.

## **What About the Fat?**
[Liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/liposuction) is a key component of the mommy makeover to remove stubborn pockets of fat from the abdomen, hips, waist, and even thighs. With all the fat that plastic surgeons remove, some started to put it to good use by purifying it and transplanting it to other parts of the face or body – including the butt. Adding fat to the buttocks via a [BBL](https://aedit.com/aedition/brazilian-butt-lift-procedure-safety) in conjunction with the standard mommy makeover is known as an ‘hourglass mommy makeover’ for the curves it creates. This variation can still feature all the aspects of a conventional mommy makeover, but it adds new emphasis to the buttocks.

The BBL has become increasingly popular due to current aesthetic ideals in popular culture and the fact that it's a relatively simple procedure to increase volume in the buttocks lost after pregnancy, Dr. Layke shares. It’s part of a larger shift in the goal of the procedure. “The hourglass mommy makeover is everything that a traditional mommy makeover is and includes 360-degree reshaping with fat grafting the buttocks,” says [Jules Walters III, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jules-walters-md-34662), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Metairie, LA. “With advancements in fat-grafting technology, as well as safety, patients realize that they can achieve natural results with fat grafting to the buttocks, which enhances their mommy makeover results.”

After a traditional mommy makeover, some patients realize the surgery does not feel ‘complete’ as the backside of the body is not addressed at all, explains [S. Alexander Earle, MD](http://www.pureplasticsurgery.com/), a double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Miami. “Therefore, after the mommy makeover, patients may return for a BBL because they want to improve their buttocks, backs (especially along the bra line), and hips to achieve a harmonious hourglass shape and round out their new figure from all angles,” he says. 

No rule says you must repurpose the removed fat. Those undergoing a mommy makeover who are perfectly happy with the size, curvature, and shape of their tush and prefer to leave it alone can – but that’s not to say they can’t use the fat for something else. Dr. Walters says patients may instead add fat to the [breasts](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-fat-transfer), [face](https://aedit.com/procedure/facial-fat-grafting), and even [labia majora](https://aedit.com/procedure/labia-augmentation-with-fat-transfer). It should be noted that the fat removal and transfer must happen at the same time. Unfortunately, at the moment, there is no way to bank fat for future use.

## **The Perfect Proportion**
Several changes happen to the body due to pregnancy and age, and it's not atypical for deflation of the butt to occur. It’s similar to what many women experience with the breasts. But only recently have women been more forthcoming about variations to their backside – especially the ‘[hip dip](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-procedures-for-hip-dips)’ area (where the hip and the thigh meet) – along with those affecting the breasts and abdomen. “By enhancing the buttocks with fat grafting, it allows for a smoother transition from the waist to the buttocks, creating an hourglass appearance,” Dr. Walters says. A tummy tuck alone does not create additional volume or contours to the posterior.

The addition of fat to the butt and the surrounding areas gives a more feminine curve to the lower part of the body. While it may seem counterintuitive that adding fat can create a more desirable shape, it most certainly can. Plus, the additional fat makes a lower hip-to-waist ratio that ‘cores out’ the lower back for a more sculpted appearance. In some cases, patients may need to add fat to the buttocks to make their legs look more proportionate to the rest of their bodies, and it may be the opposite for others, says [Constantino Mendieta, MD](http://www.buttsbymendieta.com/), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Miami. 

The amount of fat necessary to create these desired proportions varies from patient to patient. On average, a BBL requires anywhere from 250 to 750 ccs (or more) of fat. However, the amount of fat your plastic surgeon can remove via liposuction has to fall under a state's legal limit. For example, Dr. Mendieta says that in Florida (where he practices) the legal limit for fat extraction is four liters. “If there is any sort of cutting involved – like with a tummy tuck or breast augmentation done that same day – the legal limit is one liter,” he adds. Patients need to keep this in mind when considering how much volume they want in their butt. “If a patient does not have a lot of fat, their result may not be as dramatic,” he cautions.

Of course, how much fat exists naturally and the aesthetic someone is trying to achieve influence how much fat to use. For example, Dr. Walters says he sometimes focuses just on the lateral buttocks (i.e. the hip dip) if the patient has a limited amount of donor fat. However, if more significant volumes of fat are available, plastic surgeons can transplant more of it to the butt. Dr. Layke advises that larger volumes of fat can lead to an exaggerated waist-to-hip ratio, so it’s important to discuss your desired results with your surgeon to determine what will be safe and effective.

## **One Surgery vs. Two: Which Route to Go**
A traditional mommy makeover is usually performed all at once (though a patient may choose to break it up). With the hourglass mommy makeover, not every plastic surgeon who performs the surgery chooses to do it all at once. Some, including Dr. Earle, prefer splitting it into two separate surgeries. “It is safer for the patient this way,” he says. In addition, staging the surgery reduces [complication rates](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-cosmetic-surgery-complications), makes recovery easier, and results in less discomfort for the patient, he adds. When operating on the buttocks, the breasts, and the stomach, it can be challenging to [sleep comfortably](https://aedit.com/aedition/sleeping-better-after-cosmetic-surgery-aesthetic-procedures), which is crucial for a [healthy recovery](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-plastic-surgery-recovery-nurses-centers-products).

Another critical reason why an hourglass mommy makeover may be broken up is to increase the rate of fat survival. For the fat to successfully establish itself after transfer, patients [should not sit or apply pressure](https://aedit.com/aedition/brazilian-butt-lift-bbl-recovery-healing-process) to their buttocks or hips for up to six weeks post-op. “This becomes very difficult if another surgical procedure is done to the front of the body simultaneously,” Dr. Earle says. For this reason alone, he recommends doing the BBL first and then, three months later, performing the breast procedure and tummy tuck portions.

Some surgeons may agree to perform the BBL in conjunction with the other two. And since some patients don’t want to undergo surgery twice, they opt to have all three areas of the body addressed in a single surgery. ## **The Ideal Candidate for an Hourglass Mommy Makeover**
Not every woman undergoing a mommy makeover has deflation in the buttocks, nor does every patient want the additional surgery. However, Dr. Layke says he recommends the hourglass mommy makeover to women who have square body frames, a flatter buttocks, and/or fat accumulation in the back and flank region. It's also suitable for those who have lost a significant amount of weight – whether from weight loss or after pregnancy – and see noticeable changes in their bodies.

Of course, patients need to be in excellent health, at their ideal weight, and have the right amount and kind of fat. “Those with too high a BMI (greater than 30) or who have a high degree of visceral fat are not candidates,” Dr. Earle says. As long as there is enough fat to remove and harvest, most women undergoing a mommy makeover can opt for the BBL portion of the surgery, and Dr. Walters says 99 percent of the mommy makeovers in his practice “include fat grafting to the buttocks to optimize the overall shape.” 

For patients who lack enough fat to harvest for transfer, there are alternatives to achieving more of an hourglass figure. But what about the mons pubis? While both males and females have a mons pubis, it is more prominent in females — and a variety of factors can impact its fullness. 

Sometimes referred to as ‘FUPA’ (a.k.a. Fat Upper Pubic Area), excess skin and fat can occur as a result of weight fluctuations, pregnancy, hormonal changes, or genetics, leading to aesthetic and functional concerns. For those looking to refine the appearance of the mons pubis, monsplasty may be the solution. Here’s what you need to know.

## **What Is Monsplasty?**
Also known as a mons pubis reduction or pubic lift, [monsplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/monsplasty) can remove excess skin and/or fat for a firmer and more contoured mons pubis (i.e. the area of fatty tissue located directly in front of the pubic bone). “Mons pubis reduction is more common than you may think,” says [David Shafer, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/david-shafer-md-153), a double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York City. “There are even acronyms such as FUPA — Fat Upper Pubic Area — to describe the condition.” 

As he explains, such patients report “an unsightly or uncomfortable fullness in the pubic area, which is disproportionate to the rest of their body.” That fullness can show through clothes, make wearing tight garments difficult, and, in some cases, interfere with sexual intercourse or urination. “Good candidates for mons pubis reduction are those that are otherwise healthy and in shape but have concerns about their pubic area fullness,” Dr. Shafer notes.

### **Benefits of Monsplasty** 
Monsplasty can involve liposuction (to remove fat), surgical excision (to remove skin), or a combination of the two. “The planned procedure depends on the patient's anatomy and expectations from surgery,” Dr. Shafer shares. For patients who are concerned about “localized fullness,” he says liposuction is often enough. If skin laxity is a concern, surgical excision may be necessary.

Because the mons pubis sits just below the lower abdomen, patients may wish to address both areas at once. “If the patient's lower abdomen is also protuberan or if there is a step off or bulge between the lower abdomen and pubis, then a [mini-abdominoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/mini-tummy-tuck) may be the best option to give the smoothest result,” Dr. Shafer explains. 

While [tummy tucks](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty) and [liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/tumescent-liposuction) (back and/or abdominal) are often combined with monsplasty to improve the final result, they are not the only [pairings](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-aesthetic-procedures-to-combine-to-maximize-appointments). At his practice, “patients also take the opportunity to get other procedures done while in the operating room – such as [breast augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-solutions) or [breast reduction](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-reduction-and-revision-solutions),” Dr. Shafer adds.

### **Monsplasty Procedure**
Depending on the technique employed, a monsplasty surgery can last one to two hours. In the case of a lipo-only procedure, tiny incisions are made and the fat is removed via a liposuction cannula. The outpatient procedure takes about an hour. If a surgical excision is required or if a tummy tuck is being performed in tandem, the procedure may be closer to two hours. An incision is made in the hairline of the pubic mound (around where a [c-section incision](https://aedit.com/aedition/invasive-non-invasive-procedures-to-fix-appearance-of-c-section-scar) is usually located). Excess skin and fatty tissue is removed before the site is closed with sutures.

In both cases, surgical drains may be placed to help reduce swelling and discomfort. They will be removed a few days later during a follow-up appointment.

### **Monsplasty Recovery & Results**
While the [type of anesthesia](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-anesthesia) you receive will depend on your surgeon and preferences, you should plan to have someone help you get home after surgery. The recovery process will largely depend on the type of monsplasty procedure performed. “If treated with liposuction, the patient can expect a few days of downtime but a quick return to normal activities and work,” Dr. Shafer says. 

Excision and tummy tuck patients will need to take it easy a bit longer and should anticipate about a week of downtime before heading back to school or work. From there, it’ll be at least a month before a full resumption of normal activities. “Returning to [exercise](https://aedit.com/aedition/when-to-start-exercising-again-after-cosmetic-surgery-procedures) and other strenuous activities can take four to six weeks to allow time for healing,” he explains.

As with any surgery, [swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery) is one of the most common post-op side effects, and it may cause the pubic area to look even fuller than it did before. But, not to worry, the swelling will significantly subside in the first few weeks and then continue to resolve over three to six months. Incision site [scarring](https://aedit.com/aedition/minimizing-scars-after-surgery) should fade over the course of a year. The results of monsplasty are considered permanent (assuming there are no large fluctuations in weight), though the skin will continue to age naturally.

Let’s be honest, the thought of an injection in the vulva is somewhat terrifying. Add in the fact that the shot involves [platelet-rich plasma (PRP)](https://aedit.com/aedition/prp-and-stem-cells-are-changing-the-face-of-the-cosmetics-industry), and you may be even more ready to jump to another article. But women have found the rejuvenating results of such injections to be worth any momentary discomfort. Intrigued? Here’s what you need to know about O-Shot for [vaginal rejuvenation](https://aedit.com/procedure/vaginal-rejuvenation-solutions).

## **What Is O-Shot?**
O-Shot refers to an “injection of platelets into numbed areas of the vagina, clitoris, and labia,” says [Jason Emer, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/jason-emer-md-722), a board certified cosmetic dermatologist in West Hollywood. The purpose is to heighten orgasms and improve sexual dysfunction. “This process uses your own body’s growth factors to stimulate healing and rejuvenation,” he explains.

The most well known version of the treatment is the Orgasm Shot®, which was coined by Charles Runels, MD — the same doctor that popularized the [vampire facial](https://aedit.com/procedure/vampire-facelift) with Kim Kardashian and the [P-Shot](https://aedit.com/aedition/p-shot-prp-penis-injections-erectile-dysfunction) (i.e. PRP injections into the penis). Although it’s gaining attention as a treatment option, there remains a lack of research into the use of PRP for [women’s sexual health](https://aedit.com/concern/female-sexual-wellness). In a [2014 pilot study](https://www.longdom.org/open-access/a-pilot-study-of-the-effect-of-localized-injections-of-autologous-platelet-rich-plasma-prp-for-the-treatment-of-female-sexual-dysfunction-2167-0420.1000169.pdf) that did not appear in a peer-reviewed publication, improvements in patient satisfaction and pain were noted but not considered statistically significant.

## **How Does O-Shot Work?**
While it may sound hard to believe, O-Shot is one of those things where the knowledge of what’s happening is actually more painful than the experience itself. “With the topical numbing cream, they should not experience anything more than a little discomfort, if any at all,” Dr. Emer says. 

Like a PRP treatment used for other aesthetic and therapeutic purposes, the procedure involves drawing a blood sample (usually the arm or some other non-invasive locale) and putting it into a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma, which is packed with healing growth factors. The PRP solution is then injected into different parts of the vulva with a fine-gauge needle.

Depending on the patient’s preferences, the PRP can be injected into three major areas: 

- The labia
- The internal vaginal canal
- The clitoral hood 

When injected into the labia majora, it helps maintain volume and improve overall appearance. Injecting into the vaginal canal and clitoral hood, meanwhile, is thought to provide the functional and sensorial benefits. O-Shot boosts blood flow to the treatment area, which may heighten sensitivity to stimulation and increase libido. Some patients also report an increase in vaginal lubrication, as well as improvement in urinary function and incontinence.

The entire procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes, though it’s not a one-and-done thing. “O-Shot requires a series of treatments first, typically monthly for three treatments,” Dr. Emer says. After the initial three sessions, the patient can come in every three to six months to “maintain results and prevent the symptoms of aging in this area,” he adds. 

As with any injection, “sensitivity and irritation are not uncommon or abnormal” after treatment, Dr. Emer says. Patients may feel a bit of pressure during treatment as the solution is injected, and there may be a mild stinging sensation that resolves within 15 minutes or so.

## **Best Candidates for O-Shot**

Wanting your pre-baby body back — after the triumphant wave of the miracle of childbirth subsides, of course — is an extremely relatable sentiment. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) [reports](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/documents/News/Statistics/2019/plastic-surgery-statistics-full-report-2019.pdf) that three out of the five most performed surgical procedures for women in 2019 — breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tuck — make up the crux of the so-called ‘[mommy makeover](https://aedit.com/concern/mommy-makeover).’ 

Despite its cute moniker, it is an intensive surgery that combines multiple procedures into one fell swoop operation. So, what procedures does a mommy makeover include, specifically? Well, that depends on who you ask. “There are a ton of variations to a mommy makeover,” says [David Sieber, MD](https://www.instagram.com/dr.davidsieber/?hl=en), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in San Francisco. “There’s a lot going on, and it’s serious in the fact that it’s a longer procedure because they’re having so much done at once.”

One thing all providers can agree on? There is a lot of room for interpretation. “A [mommy makeover](https://aedit.com/procedure/mommy-makeover-solutions) is a general term to describe a constellation of procedures, but most commonly addresses the patient’s abdomen and breasts,” says Manhattan-based double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, [David Shafer, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/david-shafer-md-153), noting that a stomach’s lingering round appearance months after childbirth is due to the separation of the abdominal muscles ([diastasis recti](https://aedit.com/aedition/diastasis-recti-repair-abdominal-separation-post-pregnancy-weight-loss)) during pregnancy and can only be restored surgically.

### **1. Ask yourself: Do I know what a mommy makeover actually is?**

Your body goals and what you’d like your figure to resemble post-op after everything settles will determine your surgical plan. “The procedures depend on the patient’s anatomy and desired results,” Dr. Shafer explains. 

Take the breasts, for example. “If a patient has small breasts, an A or B cup, then often [breast implants](https://aedit.com/procedure/breast-augmentation-with-implants) are enough to improve the shape, size, and give a slight lift,” he says. But, if the breasts are drooping, “then a lift would be necessary.” For a patient seeking “larger and lifted breasts,” meanwhile, “a breast lift *and* implants are performed,” he adds. No skin is removed during the c-section, so it leaves the stretched skin to sag. “When I perform a tummy tuck or an abdominoplasty, I remove the c-section scar and work to make the incision at or below the level of the c-section incision,” Dr. Shafer notes.    

### **4. Ask yourself: How much time do I have for recovery?**
Dr. Sieber does not mince words when it comes to getting real about recovering from a mommy makeover: “You’re going to be very, very uncomfortable.” Both surgeons say that recovery varies from person to person and is influenced by their age and overall health, but all patients should expect antibiotics and [narcotics](https://aedit.com/aedition/opioid-crisis-plastic-surgery-recovery-pain-management) to ensure that the pain — especially the first few days post-surgery — is tolerable. Dr. Sieber adds that patients “definitely need to plan for a mommy makeover” and will need a 24/7 support person. That person can be a partner, sibling, friend, or [professional caretaker](https://aedit.com/aedition/plastic-surgery-recovery-nursing-concierge) for the first two to three days post-surgery because “you really need to have someone there who can help take care of you.” 

Dr. Shafer has his patients wear [compression garments](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-compression-garments-after-cosmetic-surgery) for six to eight weeks and tells them to hold off on lifting children or heavy items for about six weeks as well in order to avoid engaging the core abdominal muscles while they’re healing. “Most of the [swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery) and [bruising](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-bruising-after-lasers-filler-botox) will resolve in the first few weeks,” he says. “Patients will start to feel like themselves again and get back to work and their regular activities, but still need to do incision care and dressing changes.” In the months following the surgery, Dr. Shafer recommends lasers and other in-office technologies for incision treatment and [scar reduction](https://aedit.com/aedition/minimizing-scars-after-surgery). 

While swelling subsides over the first few months, the sutures Dr. Sieber uses for a mommy makeover last up to six months before dissolving. “So, even though patients are feeling a little better, if they turn a certain way and feel a tug from the suture, they get zingers from the nerves,” he explains. “There are a lot of little annoying things that will randomly happen three to six months after surgery.”

### **5. Ask yourself: Am I planning to have more children?**
If you are looking to [maximize your experience](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-aesthetic-procedures-to-combine-to-maximize-appointments) under the knife, a mommy makeover surgery is the most time-, cost-, and recovery-effective for women who have no plans for future children, according to Dr. Sieber. ### **6. Ask yourself: Am I still breastfeeding?**
“The usual rule of thumb is you want to be done breastfeeding for six months before doing any type of breast surgery,” Dr. Sieber shares. As he explains, you want all the milk glands to be done producing milk because, if you perform a breast surgery when the patient is still lactating, you could get milk in the wound. That “increases the risk of getting a bacterial contamination or other infections,” he cautions. If you’re super eager to get your pre-baby body back, a mommy makeover can be performed six to eight weeks after discontinuing breastfeeding, Dr. Shafer says.

### **7. Ask your doctor: Should I do all the procedures I want at once?**
Since a mommy makeover combines several procedures, it is generally one of the more [time-consuming aesthetic surgeries](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-surgical-and-non-surgical-cosmetic-procedures-to-combine). In fact, Dr. Sieber reserves his entire day when a mommy makeover is scheduled because they can take upwards of five hours. 

After he aligns with patients on the intense recovery, time in the OR is the next hurdle. “The question to ask is how long it’s going to take the surgeon to complete the procedure,” he explains. “Mommy makeovers can vary a lot, so it can be anywhere from four to seven hours.” Generally speaking, surgeons will only perform the procedures they know they can fit into a six-hour period to minimize risk. “One thing you definitely don’t want is a surgery longer than six or seven hours because the risk of complications gets higher,” Dr. Sieber cautions.

As a result, one surgery for several complicated procedures sometimes isn’t worth the gamble. Dr. Shafer says that it’s “not uncommon to stagger the procedures.” In such cases, a breast surgery may be performed first and then followed by the abdomen procedure six to 12 weeks later. Those with symptoms of urinary incontinence or pelvic floor issues are also good candidates, though, he notes, they may need more complex treatments. In such cases, the patient can “have a cosmetic improvement performed at the same time as a medical functional treatment,” he says. When there are medical concerns, they should first be evaluated by a gynecologist.

On the flip side, you are not a good candidate for vaginoplasty if you are still planning to have children. “The layers of repair will most likely be injured with another delivery,” Dr. Patel says. She does, however, recommend vaginoplasty for “any woman who has completed childbirth and is seeking pleasure during intercourse again.”

### **4. How Do You Prepare for a Vaginoplasty?**
“Prior to the surgery, I like to recommend to my patients that they start stool softeners to avoid straining post-surgery,” Dr. Patel says. “Even if they don’t suffer with constipation, some may have constipation from narcotic use for post pain management.” Additionally, essential preparation before *any* surgery involves smoking cessation (if applicable), as well as discontinuing the use NSAIDs and medications with anticoagulant properties, “including [supplements and vitamins](https://aedit.com/aedition/vitamins-supplements-to-avoid-before-cosmetic-surgery) such as fish oil, garlic, turmeric, vitamin E, and red wine, for at least seven days prior to the surgery,” she explains.

Generally speaking, “patients who are healthy with no major health problems are good candidates,” Dr. Judge explains. “[Smokers](https://aedit.com/aedition/impact-of-cigarette-smoking-vaping-on-skin-hair-teeth-health) are not good candidates, as smoking impairs wound healing.” Women with a longer labia minora that causes discomfort in tighter clothing (think: yoga pants, swimsuits, etc), physical activity, and during sex are all potential patients. ### **3. What Happens During Labiaplasty?**
If you are considering labiaplasty, you may be comforted to know that it is considered a very “predictable” procedure. Labiaplasty is an outpatient surgery that typically takes around two hours. After anesthesia (usually local), surgeons proceed with trimming the excess tissue that was marked prior to sedation. “When the trim is complete, the tissues have been re-approximated with sutures that will dissolve and are hiding within the tissue,” Dr. Judge explains. As a result, you won’t need to worry about having stitches removed. “There is nothing to take out after the procedure,” she says.

### **4. What Are the Risks Associated With Labiaplasty?**
All surgical procedures come with risks. In the case of labiaplasty, the most common complication is wound dehiscence — “a fancy term for ‘your incision opened up,’” Dr. Judge says. Usually, this is prevented by the way the wounds are stitched, which is why it is important to find a provider who has experience with the procedure.

### **5. Does Insurance Cover Labiaplasty?**
Despite having functional benefits, labiaplasty is usually considered cosmetic and, therefore, [not covered by insurance](https://aedit.com/aedition/insurance-coverage-for-plastic-surgery-cosmetic-procedures). However, “a medical procedure is deemed medically necessary when it can improve the health and well-being of a patient,” notes [Douglas Monasebian, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/douglas-monasebian-md-200), a NYC-based plastic and reconstructive surgeon. As he explains, some medical indications for labiaplasty include pain from the labia rubbing against undergarments, discomfort during intercourse, and the presence of infection around the labia minora. “Another soft indication would be psychological disturbance,” he adds.

### **6. What Is the Labiaplasty Recovery Process Like?**
The recovery process after a labiaplasty is, as Dr. Judge says, “fast, simple, and straightforward,” though “you are a couch potato for the first week.” During that period of downtime, patients are advised to shower daily, pat the area dry, and apply antibiotic ointment throughout the day, in addition to icing the area. After the first seven days, patients can get up, walk around, and resume most normal activities, but heavy lifting and working out are off limits for the first month. “By three weeks, 50 percent of the swelling is down, by six weeks, 80 percent is down,” Dr. Judge explains. “By three months, that last little bit is gone.” Many doctors will also prescribe a course of antibiotics to prevent infection. 

### **7. How Does Labiaplasty Impact Sexual Health?**
Though you will not be able to have sex for at least four weeks after labiaplasty, most women report improved sexual experiences after they’ve healed ([two patients spoke to us about their experience](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-labiaplasty)). “Overall, the procedure will not affect fertility in any way, but it may make intercourse and intimate relations more pleasurable,” Dr. Monasebian explains. “If there was any pain during intercourse, this is very often relieved.” That can potentially include enhanced orgasms, too. “Labiaplasty can increase clitoral exposure, leading to easier or more profound orgasms,” Dr. Chmielewski says. “It can also enhance confidence regarding the appearance of the vulvar area.”

### **8. What Kind of Results Can Be Expected from Labiaplasty?**
This procedure yields reliable results. Patients can expect “natural looking anatomy with an almost imperceptible scar,” Dr. Judge says. It should be noted, however, that ‘natural looking’ doesn’t mean perfectly symmetrical. “You will always have asymmetry between the right and left side,” she notes. “That is considered natural and normal.”
