As with most innovative beauty tricks, it’s had a long history in the drag scene. 

No matter the technique, there is a learning curve to applying false lashes and under lashing is no exception. Some people aren’t sold on the idea of putting lash glue so close to their eyes, while others struggle to get the placement just right. To clear up any confusion about the safety and efficacy of the under lash technique, we tapped a top expert.

## **How to Under Lash Safely**
Let’s get this out the way upfront: If you are curious about whether or not under lashing is safe, the short answer is yes – with some careful instructions. “It is safe to apply lashes under your lashes as opposed to on top of your lashes because they don’t actually get glued to the skin of the waterline, or the edge of the skin under your top lashes,” explains [Lynn Simpson](https://www.instagram.com/lynnsimpsonmakeup/?hl=en), a celebrity makeup artist at [Facial Lounge](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Ffaciallounge.com%2F) in Corona Del Mar, CA. “They are glued to the lashes themselves.” In case all of those social media videos haven’t made it clear, below are four things to keep in mind for a simpler and more successful under lash application:

1. **Prep Properly**: When it comes to applying false lashes, where you apply them is most important factor to keeping your eyes safe. To ensure you’re not putting glue on your waterline, use a bright light and a mirror. This will give you a full view of your lashes. 
2. **Work in Small Pieces**: While a few brave souls have tried under lashing using a full strip lash, Simpson says it’s much easier to work in smaller sections that are more flexible and easier to line up correctly. For normal hair growth on the scalp, brows, and lashes, those follicles need plenty of oxygen and nutrients. “Lash and brow serums work by directly supplying the hair follicles with vitamins, nutrients, and hair-promoting growth factors by applying with a brush or wand,” says [Adriana Lombardi, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/adriana-lombardi-md-12670), a board certified dermatologist and co-director of the Advanced Laser and Skin Cancer Center of New Jersey.

While women have been seeking thicker, longer, fuller lashes for millennia, modern lash serums were born by accident. “[Latisse®](https://aedit.com/procedure/latisse) was initially and still is a medication to treat glaucoma when applied into the eye,” Dr. Lombardi explains. “We found that patients using this product had significant growth of the eyelashes. Since then, it has been used on a brush applicator to apply to the eyelashes and eyebrows to stimulate growth.”

### **What are the active ingredients in lash serums?**
Most lash growth serums contain two main categories of ingredients: conditioners and growth stimulants. These typically include:

- **Botanical Extracts**: Powerful plant essences that can help hydrate and nourish skin.
- **Vitamins**: The most important of these is vitamin B7 (a.k.a. biotin), which helps turn the food we eat into energy and plays a key role in creating healthy skin, hair, and nails.

You might be wondering if you can just go ahead and swipe your favorite brow serum on your lashes and vice versa. “Brows and lashes are different,”  explains Alicia Grande, founder and CEO of [Grande Cosmetics](https://grandecosmetics.com/). “They have different growth cycle lengths and are different in size.” As a result, product formulations tend to be slightly different, and their applicators are, too. If you are using Latisse®, many experts agree it can be applied (carefully!) on the brows to stimulate growth. 

## **Prescription vs. OTC Lash Serums**
In a nutshell, substances classified as ‘drugs’ elicit some sort of physiological change in your body (in this case, quantifiable eyelash growth), while cosmetic-grade products affect your appearance (shinier, plumper lashes, for example). Drugs like Latisse® undergo thorough examination by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), whereas cosmetic OTC products do not have to go through the same testing protocols.

Whether a product is approved by the FDA as a drug also affects how companies can characterize and market the product. Claims made by a manufacturer are often just as important as the ingredients listed on the packaging. “Prescription products go through full-blown medical studies and can claim growth,” Grande says.

### **How long does it take to see lash serum results?**
We’re all about instant gratification, but patience is a virtue when it comes to lash growth. Why does it take so long for lash serums to work? It has to do with the natural growth cycle of the hair. Regardless of whether you choose a prescription or OTC formula, you can usually expect to see initial results in about four weeks, with maximum results peaking after three months of use.

The catch? As soon as you stop applying the serum regularly, the benefits will fade. But don’t go thinking you can defy Mother Nature with a ‘more is more’ attitude. “We don’t recommend applying the product more than one swipe, once a day,” Grande says of GrandeLASH-MD. “ Our serums are formulated to work based on the growth cycle timetable of your lashes and brows, which you can’t speed up.”

## **Lash Serum Safety**
The FDA considers Latisse® to be safe and effective as long as it’s used under the supervision of a physician. “When patients complain of thinning eyelashes or eyebrows, I do recommend using Latisse®,” Dr. Lombardi says. “It works well and gives patients significant results.”

Like any drug, however, there are potential risks and side effects, including dry eyes, eyelid darkening, and, in rare cases, eye color change. “This was found if the medication gets into the eye and is used for long periods of time,” Dr. Lombardi says of the misconception. When the product is applied correctly, she notes that the risk eye color change is under one percent. A more common side effect? “It can commonly cause dermatitis where applied,” she says.

As we’ve established, things are less clear in the OTC market. Any product that contains a prostaglandin analog will likely carry similar risks to that of Latisse®. Consumers should always check the ingredients list and consult with their dermatologist before introducing new products into their skincare regimen. “While sensitivity is rare, there is always a possibility whenever introducing a new beauty product,” Grande explains. “We suggest testing our products on your hand first to determine if you have a sensitivity to it.”

More often than not, sensitivity or irritation occurs when products are not used as intended. “If irritation occurs, feel free to use the product every other day or so for a week or two,” she advises. “Then, resume daily use as instructed. A consumer study [of GrandeLASH-MD] was performed on 35 participants and the side effects were very minimal.”

### **Can You Use Lash Serum with Lash Extensions?**
Let’s dispel a common myth: If you’ve got [eyelash extensions](https://aedit.com/procedure/eyelash-extensions), you can — and should — use a lash serum to help prevent the loss and breakage of your natural eyelashes. Make sure, however, you choose a product that does not break down cyanoacrylate (i.e. the glue used in most lash extension treatments). Steer clear of products containing coconut oil or other oils (olive, jojoba, etc.) and look for lash serums that say “safe for lash extensions.”

Dr. Lombardi generally recommends foregoing lash extensions altogether in favor of Latisse®, as long as the patient is a good candidate. “Lash extensions are harmful to the overall health of the eyelash,” she explains. “Whenever you apply traction/glue to a hair follicle, you run the risk of causing irreversible damage to that follicle.” That damage can lead to hair thinning and loss, and the same holds true for eyebrows. “[Microblading](https://aedit.com/aedition/microblading-treatments-for-fuller-thicker-eyebrows) is done by creating trauma or micropores to the eyebrow area and placing dye,” she says. “This also has the potential to cause damage to the hair follicles in this area.”

## **How to Find the Best Lash Serum**
So, how do you decide whether to opt for a prescription or over-the-counter lash serum? It really comes down to your needs, budget, and biology. “Not all serums are created equal and what that means is, not all serums have the same ingredients,” Grande says. “But keep in mind, more expensive doesn’t always mean better.” 

If dramatic growth is your goal and you’re willing to accept potential side effects, prescription Latisse® could be a good option. If you’re looking for something more natural but still noticeable, an OTC brand can likely do the trick.

Approaching double-digit growth and generating nearly one billion dollars a year in the United States alone, [eyelash extensions](https://aedit.com/procedure/eyelash-extensions) have become big business. Between the price point (a full set costs between $175 and $500 for first timers) and maintenance (monthly touchups running $80 and $150), finding the right technician to perfect your lash look is so important. But it’s not just about cost, cleanliness, or comfort level — it’s about connecting with an experienced pro who’s able to evaluate your anatomy and create a design that enhances your unique features.

Developing the ideal lash look is more complicated than it may seem. A lash extension artist must consider everything from eye shape and lid height/depth to natural lash length, texture, curl, and direction. Oh, and then there is the client’s desired result to consider. This is especially true for clients of Asian descent and those with monolid or hooded eyes. To learn more, we talked to Mydygma Nimbueva, a premiere lash specialist and owner of [Beautyful Lashes Salon](https://www.beautyfullashes.com/) in Beverly Hills.

## **The Relationship Between Lash Extensions & Eye Shape**
Eye shape plays a big role in lash extension techniques, and this is particularly true for clients with monolid and hooded eyes. “As an Asian lash artist and educator, who also wears lash extensions, it’s very easy for me to understand our struggles and our needs,” Nimbueva shares. “A lot of Asian women try to find an Asian hairstylist who knows how to work with Asian hair and a makeup artist who specializes in Asian makeup because our faces and our beauty is different.”

Technically, there are a half dozen different classifications for the Asian eyelid, but Nimbueva breaks it down more simply:

- **Monolid**: This is an eyelid without a visible crease. There are variations within this category, Nimbueva explains, with some lids closed along the entire eye, some closed toward the beginning (near the nose) and more open at the outer corner, and some with a combination.
- **Partial Monolid**: Eyelids that show only a portion of the crease are known as half, partial, or demi monolids. “In the majority of cases, these eye shapes are a little bit asymmetric,” Nimbueva says. “We can correct that with different styling on each eye.”
- **Open Eye**: Open eyelids have a distinct crease that visibly separates the lower and upper portions of the eyelids. This can be either genetic (“I have an open eye type,” Nimbueva says.) or obtained via [blepharoplasty](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-really-like-to-get-eyelid-surgery-blepharoplasty) — one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures in Asia.

And then there is the growth pattern of the lashes themselves. Nimbueva explains that having lush locks on the head (“we are blessed with great hair,” she quips) doesn’t necessarily translate to the brows and lashes. Women of Asian descent often have sparse brows and fragile, straight lashes (short or long in length) that grow downward. It’s not hard to understand then why many Asian women turn to lash extensions as a semi-permanent substitute for traditional eye makeup, like [mascara](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-lengthening-curling-volumizing-mascaras), strip lashes, and eyeliner.

## **Lash Extension Techniques**
It’s clear when talking to Nimbueva that applying eyelash extensions is a combination of both art and science. Each look is highly customized to the individual client, but there are some commonalities she’s noticed over the years. “Forty percent of my clients are Asian,” Nimbueva estimates. “Some prefer a really natural, almost flat curl that is a little bit thicker than her natural lashes.” The second group, she explains, is just the opposite. “Those women who aren’t blessed with long, strong, curly lashes and want to feel like they’re maximizing their investment want a very long, very full, almost mega-volume technique.”

### **Volume**
- **Classic Technique**: Traditionally, the most subtle, natural looking lash extensions use a 1:1 ratio, where a pro glues one individual lash extension onto each natural lash.
- **Russian Volume/Megavolume Technique**: This ultra-lush look is achieved by creating a “fan” of multiple lashes (anywhere from two to 16) that is paired with one individual natural eyelash. “A megavolume look can be amazing on Asians with monolids,” Nimbueva says. “It can cover the monolid if we choose the right length and can create the illusion of the open eye.” Those with small, round eyes, however, should avoid megavolume, as it can make the eyes appear even smaller.

### **Shape**
- **Doll Eye**: This look focuses the attention on the center of the eye. The longest eyelash extensions are placed at the center of the eye, and the length gradually decreases towards the corners. This shape is best for almond-shaped eyes because “a doll eye look on round eyes makes them look smaller,” Nimbueva notes.
- **Cat Eye**: The longest lashes are placed towards the outer corner of the eye to achieve an elongated appearance, and it’s ideal for those with round and small eyes. 
- **Asian Eyelid Lift**: Nimbueva is uniquely trained in the method developed in Kazakhstan by lash pioneer Malika Nauryzova, which creates a ‘double lid’ look on a monolid, without eyelid surgery. It also works well on slightly hooded and aging eyes, because it gives a little bit of lift. Due to the added complexity, this treatment takes three to four hours.

Anecdotally, Nimbueva notes that she has noticed sensitivities and allergic reactions (most commonly to cyanoacrylate, the main ingredient in lash glue) are less common among her Asian clients.

## **Lash Extension Types**
Because the lash extension industry isn’t regulated, Nimbueva warns that the same false lash type produced by different manufacturers will vary. If you’re aiming for a specific look, it’s best to defer to your lash specialist.

To achieve a natural effect, Nimbueva relies primarily on three lash extension types. “C is the most classic curl in lash extensions, more of a natural curl,” she explains. “J and B curl is a flatter curl.” For clients with open eye types looking for a more dramatic effect (and lots of volume), CC curl and D curl tend to offer the best results. Those with downward-facing lashes, meanwhile, benefit from L+ curl extensions because they have “a longer leg and an extreme curl that goes up,” she says. But that doesn’t mean they are for everyone. L+ lashes may feel heavy and can twist as they grow out.

To avoid weighing down the natural lashes, Nimbueva favors very fine eyelash extensions — those with a thickness of 0.03 millimeters. These lashes, particularly in a CC curl, create a “very natural, wispy, feathery look,” she shares. Her preferred L+ curl lashes are just a fraction thicker at 0.05 millimeters. For perspective, most salons in the U.S. use extensions that range from 0.10 to 0.15 millimeters. The ultra-light lashes tend to be favored by elite pros to create more volume without weight, though you’ll pay a bit more for the service.

## **The Takeaway**
No matter your eye shape and eyelash type, it is important to find a professional who has extensive training treating clients with similar needs. Nimbueva says that any reputable lash artist will ask you about your goals and ideas during your consultation. “I often end up doing a combination that elongates and opens up the eyes at the same time,” she explains. In her experience, clients are extremely loyal once they find a lash pro who really understands their unique anatomy and objectives. “I educate and make it fun for them,” Nimbueva explains. “Each of my clients is her own designer. She can’t stop looking at herself in the mirror afterwards — it gives her a boost of self confidence.”

For millennia (yes, it’s really been that long), humans have been searching for the most effective way to achieve the illusion of [long, lush lashes](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-eyelash-treatments-are-right-for-you). And the rise of face masks and facial coverings during COVID-19 has put the eyes firmly in the spotlight. Cosmetic dermatologists and plastic surgeons have seen an uptick in [eye-related procedure requests](https://aedit.com/aedition/popularity-of-eyelid-surgery-cosmetic-eye-procedures-during-covid-19), [eye creams and serums](https://aedit.com/aedition/eye-creams-serums-to-treat-crows-feet-dark-circles-puffiness) claim to lighten dark circles, decrease puffiness, and minimize the appearance of crow’s feet, and [mascaras](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-lengthening-curling-volumizing-mascaras) promise expertly curled, lengthened, and defined fringe that rival [eyelash extensions](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-eyelash-extensions). But what about a salon treatment that offers long-lasting color? Here, we take a closer look at the benefits of lash tinting.

## **The History of Lash Tinting**
As we mentioned, ancient civilizations — most famously the Egyptians — darkened their lashes with a substance called ‘kohl’ that was made by grinding the mineral galena (lead sulphide) into a fine powder and mixing it with oil. South Asian cultures, meanwhile, formulated ‘kajal’ by blending ash with castor oil. Later, Europeans used everything from sulfuric acid and saffron to the soot from the fireplace to tint their lashes.

In 1917, a Chicago chemist named Thomas Williams introduced the [Maybelline Cake Mascara](https://www.maybelline.co.uk/about-maybelline#:~:text=The%20product%20worked.,cosmetic%20made%20for%20everyday%20use.), which evolved from a formula of petroleum jelly and carbon dust that was favored by his sister. About a decade later, in 1933, the Cosmetic Manufacturing Co. of Los Angeles introduced [Lash Lure](https://www.aao.org/senior-ophthalmologists/scope/article/lash-lure-paraphenylenediamine-toxic-beauty), a “new and improved eyebrow and lash dye,” which may have been “new” but it certainly wasn't “improved.” Almost immediately, users experienced severe dermatitis of the eyelids and surrounding areas that, in some cases, required the removal of all eyelashes.

Investigations found that Lash Lure contained 30 times the safe human exposure of p-phenylenediamine (PPD). As a result, several states banned eyelash tinting, and the scandal was instrumental in the passage of the [1938 Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act](https://www.fda.gov/about-fda/histories-product-regulation/1938-food-drug-and-cosmetic-act), which, for the first time, allowed federal oversight of cosmetics.

### **Eyelash Tinting Today**
Even today, the rules governing eyebrow and eyelash tinting vary from state to state. The controversy surrounding the treatment centers mostly around the safety of the dye. While semi-permanent and vegetable-based dyes are considered acceptable in states that allow the service, permanent dyes tend to be banned. [According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA)](https://www.fda.gov/cosmetics/cosmetic-products/eye-cosmetic-safety#:~:text=Permanent%20eyelash%20and%20eyebrow%20tints,dyes%20containing%20coal%20tar%20colors.): “No color additives are approved by FDA for permanent dyeing or tinting of eyelashes and eyebrows. Permanent eyelash and eyebrow tints and dyes have been known to cause serious eye injuries.” 

All the while, both impermanent lash and brow tinting remain popular salon treatments — even in states where the practice is technically prohibited. 

## **So, Is Lash Tinting Safe?**
“This is a bit of a loaded question,” says Alisandra Tobia, a licensed aesthetician and the founder of [Beauty Mood](https://www.beautymood.com/). “There are some lash tinting dyes that are safer than others, and there is some controversy around whether lash tinting should be allowed.” Tobia tells us that, in New York, semi-permanent (but not permanent) dye is permitted. In California, all brow and lash dye is prohibited.

Hold on: You can’t have your eyelashes or eyebrows tinted legally in California? It’s surprising news when you consider the fact that a simple Yelp search for “best lash tinting Los Angeles” yields a top-10 list, complete with customer reviews. As it turns out, lash and brow tinting was outlawed in California in 2001, but the state didn’t start enforcing the law until 2015. “These laws caused us to have to hide our coloring agents and be very secretive about it,” says Alisha*, the owner of a high-end Los Angeles salon that still performs the services. “When we were caught just having a tube of coloring agent in a drawer, we got a $500 fine.”

California law prohibits salons from using any products not FDA approved, and it’s currently the only state in the U.S. that has banned both lash and brow tinting. “It makes absolutely no sense to me that the law also banned eyebrow tinting because there’s no real danger there,” Alisha says. Our experts agree that, when performed by a trained professional using semi-permanent dye formulated for the face, eyelash and eyebrow tinting is generally safe. But it’s not meant to be done at home. “It should never be attempted as a DIY or at-home treatment,” Tobia warns. “The lashes and skin on the eyelid are so [delicate and sensitive](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-the-skin-around-the-eyes-with-skincare-and-non-surgical-cosmetic-procedures) and, therefore, more susceptible to irritation and infection.”

## **What Lash Tinting Treatments Entail** 
Usually, a lash tinting appointment begins with a brief consultation to determine the client’s desired look. As Tobia explains, the entire procedure takes about 30 minutes, but you’ll only spend a portion of that with the dye on your lashes.

Once you’re situated in the salon bed or chair, your practitioner will place a pad beneath your eye to catch excess dye. After the dye is applied, you’ll lay still with your eyes closed for about 10 minutes while the tint processes. After the tint is set, your practitioner will use a cotton swab to carefully remove the dye from your lashes and gently cleanse the area with a saline solution.  “It’s very important that you remain relaxed during this part of the procedure and avoid squinting your eyes or flinching,” Tobia shares, adding that both are common reflexes.

The tint lasts for up to four weeks, at which point the natural shedding and regrowth of the lashes brings them back to their natural color.

### **Side Effects of Lash Tinting**
Though the semi-permanent and vegetable-based lash dyes used by salons today cannot legally contain PPD (the toxic substance found in Lash Lure), some of them do contain its gentler cousin, toluene diamine. This substance and others in dyes (even those touted as ‘vegan’ and ‘natural’) may cause irritation, which is why some people experience stinging and watering during lash tinting treatments. Many salons require clients undergo a patch test prior to treatment to help prevent any adverse reactions.

### **How to Find a Reputable Lash Tinting Professional**
Choosing the right aesthetician and salon for your lash tinting treatment is critical. Tobia recommends people take these steps to ensure your visit goes smoothly:

- **Ask About Experience & Licensing**: Don’t be shy about asking your lash professional to disclose their training and experience. After all, we’re talking about your eyes and, in the age of COVID-19, salon safety is about more than just your face. “You should feel comfortable with the salon or spa itself, especially their cleanliness protocols nowadays,” Tobia says.
- **Find Out What’s in the Dye**: Steer clear of permanent products in favor of semi-permanent and plant-based dyes. Those with allergies or sensitivities should request for a patch test.
- **Seek Out Referrals**: “Just like you would ask friends and family for recommendations for things like auto mechanics and dentists, referrals and recommendations can be a good way to find a lash tinting practitioner that you can feel comfortable with,” Tobia shares.

As with all salon services, [coronavirus-related regulations](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-a-facial-during-covid-19) vary by state. “Right now, lash tinting is allowed in many places, with masks required for both the client and the provider,” Tobia explains. “Providers are also required to wear face shields and gloves.” Even if salons are open in your state, they may not be able to perform your requested treatment(s) right now. So, be sure to call ahead to learn more about their service offerings and safety protocols.

### **Best Treatments to Combine with Lash Tinting** 
According to our experts, it’s quite common for clients to combine lash and brow treatments. “Getting both your lashes and brows tinted at the same time is a very convenient pairing, since the dye can be applied to the brows while your lashes are processing or vice versa,” Tobia says. In Alisha’s L.A. salon, lash and brow tinting often accompany a brow-shaping session.

A [lash lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/lash-lift) (a process akin to perming lashes to create curl) is another natural pairing. “Getting a lash lift in combination with a tint tends to work well because you’re already physically situated for the tint once you’ve gotten a lash lift,” Tobia shares. “And, obviously, if you’re trying to make a wow statement with your lashes, getting both a lash lift and tint definitely achieves that.”

## **The Takeaway**
Despite its checkered past, lash tinting by a trained professional using ingredients safe for the face can provide a big — and time-saving — beauty boost. “There’s a huge convenience factor,” Tobia says. “Rather than applying mascara every day as part of your makeup routine, a lash tint can last around a month.” As she explains it, a half hour in the salon can streamline your makeup routine for weeks at a time.
