You can’t really overstate the power of a beautiful, healthy [smile](https://aedit.com/aedition/5-dental-treatments-to-enhance-your-smile). And while what constitutes that goes so much deeper than aesthetics, there are some things you can do from a cosmetic dentistry perspective to enhance your smile – from your [teeth](https://aedit.com/concern/damaged-teeth-and-gums) to your lips to the harmony of the face as a whole. Recently, we hosted an Instagram Live with [Anjali Rajpal, DMD](https://aedit.com/provider/anjali-rajpal-428), a cosmetic dentist and founder of Beverly Hills Dental Arts in Beverly Hills, CA, to learn more about how she designs ideal smiles for her patients and the [innovative treatments and techniques](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-dentistry-teeth-whitening-braces-trends) she uses to create them. ### **1. Strive for Proportion, Not Perfection**
In aesthetic medicine, we talk a lot about [proportion](https://aedit.com/aedition/plastic-surgery-results-are-about-proportion-not-perfection) and [facial harmony](https://aedit.com/aedition/facial-harmony-in-aesthetic-medicine) – cosmetic dentistry is no different. “When I am designing a smile, I look at the shape of the face,” Dr. Rajpal says. While doing so, she is looking to determine how wide or long the teeth should be and how that relates to other facial features. “Not only do I have to look at the lines of the face with the eyes, the nose, the [forehead](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-forehead-procedures), the middle of the face, we also look at the position of the lips,” she shares. 

It’s proportion – not perfection – that you’re after. “A natural face will always have a bit of asymmetry,” Dr. Rajpal notes. And the same is true of the teeth you were born with. “Everything will have a slight amount of [asymmetry](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-procedures-for-body-asymmetries), but it’s the beauty of that asymmetry that actually makes everything flow together and makes the smile look natural and beautiful,” she adds.

### **2. Look at Your Lips**
Dr. Rajpal refers to the lips as the “frame” of the smile. “You want to make sure the upper teeth follow the curvature of the lower lip,” she explains. “Then we also see how the upper lip looks to make sure the lips are perfectly framing the teeth.” This examination is especially important for patients who get neurotoxin and filler injections in the lips and/or around the mouth. “Botox® and [fillers](https://aedit.com/procedure/temporary-lip-fillers) are a great complement to whatever I’m doing, but everything needs to be in balance,” she emphasizes. “You don’t want to overdo it because then you will throw off the way the teeth look.” 

As we’ve covered, over-injecting the lips can [negatively change the smile](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-lip-filler-botox-affects-the-smile). “If you do too much filler or too much Botox®, you might drop the lip down too much and then you actually won’t see any teeth,” Dr. Rajpal notes. Instead, she says you want to make sure you can “still see the edges of the teeth even when the lip is at rest” because “that means you have a youthful smile and you have a more proportionate length.” In theory, younger people have longer teeth because they have experienced less wear and tear. If time or teeth grinding have taken their toll, however, it is possible to add length so that you once again see the teeth when the lips are relaxed.

### **3. Position the Teeth First**
What’s the best way to ensure your enhanced smile lasts for years to come? [Properly aligning](https://aedit.com/procedure/teeth-and-bite-alignment-solutions) the teeth first. “My goal is to make sure the teeth are positioned in their best, most ideal, functional position, so that they last years and years and years,” Dr. Rajpal shares. The marriage of form and function is key. “I want to minimize any extra stress on the teeth,” she says. “In order to do that, I have to make sure all the teeth are perfectly in balance.” 

As she explains, the upper teeth are supposed to fit over the lower teeth “like the lid of a box.” If they are resting on eachother or if the front teeth are taking on too much, orthodontics is going to be needed before any other treatment can be pursued. “I have patients who come to me ready to jump right into [veneers](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-really-like-to-get-veneers), but their teeth are edge to edge,” Dr. Rajpal says. “I tell them that, if I do that, the veneers are going to break, and I won’t be able to make them the correct length.” Instead, she recommends “placing the teeth” with [Invisalign®](https://aedit.com/procedure/invisalign) first. “So, yes, you will delay the veneer placement a little bit,” she admits. “But, in the long term, it’s such a smarter way to go.”

If you are [compliant](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-to-know-before-starting-invisalign) (meaning: you wear your trays for 22 hours a day as prescribed), Invisalign® can work its magic in as little as three or four months. In the case of patients who are working towards veneers, the benefits of Invisalign® are twofold. For starters, it will put the teeth “where they need to go” to reduce unnecessary stress on them and to allow your dentist to be more conserviative in preparing the veneers. “I don’t want to be trimming extra tooth structure if I don’t need to,” Dr. Rajpal notes.

The second (though no less important) benefit is how proper alignment improves oral health. “If you line your teeth up and put the veneers on, then – from the front and the back – everything is lined up and you can clean them perfectly,” Dr. Rajpal explains. “If you put veneers on while your teeth are still crowded, they might look beautiful from the front but – from the back – you still have crowding.” The risk? “You can develop cavities,” she cautions. “They are just bacteria traps.”

### **4. Don’t Dismiss Veneers**
We can’t have a conversation about smile enhancement without talking about [veneers](https://aedit.com/procedure/veneers), but, let’s be real, we’ve all got preconceived notions about the treatment. Dr. Rajpal admits there are a lot of misconceptions out there ([we’ve debunked some of the most common](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-modern-porcelain-dental-veneers)). One she hears a lot: “People think I am going to have to cut down a ton of tooth structure,” she shares. “I think they oftentimes confuse a crown with a veneer.” While a [dental crown](https://aedit.com/procedure/dental-crowns) wraps around the entire tooth, a veneer is a facing that covers the front and the edge of the tooth. As a result, “you only need to take off a tiny bit from the front and the edge,” Dr. Rajpal explains. “Almost your whole entire tooth is still there.”

Often, patients also have the idea that veneers have to look fake. When designed by an expert, that’s simply not true. “The cases that I do, I make sure that people do not know they just got veneers,” she says. “I don’t want their teeth to be blinding and attract all the attention.” In fact, they should blend right in. “The materials have changed so much throughout the years,” Dr. Rajpal explains. “You can incorporate characteristics into veneers such as shading, translucency, and texture.” This allows the veneer to look natural both IRL and in photographs. 

In some cases, Dr. Rajpal adds just one veneer, and it’s virtually imperceptible. “I have been able to match it perfectly well with the rest of the teeth, and you can’t tell that it’s a veneer at all,” she says. “As long as we’re taking the steps to ensure we are incorporating the right shading properties and texture, there is no reason they need to look fake.”

### **5. Know Your Options**
While veneers can be a game-changer, they are not for everyone. “My patients are really young, so some of them don’t want veneers because they feel like it’s just a little too premature,” Dr. Rajpal shares. “And I agree with them.” In cases where there is minimal wear and tear, a combination of Invisalign®, [dental bonding](https://aedit.com/procedure/dental-bonding), and [teeth whitening](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-teeth-whitening) can completely transform the mouth. “If they have a lot of healthy, solid tooth structure, they don’t have discoloration, and they don’t have a lot of decay, there’s basically no real reason for the veneers,” she says. 

This is why it’s important to find a provider who specializes in smile enhancement. They will know how to use the array of modalities available in the most effective way, so that you see the best results in the shortest amount of time. 

### **6. Remember: Good Oral Care Is Not Negotiable**
So, you’ve invested the time and money in enhancing your smile. All of that work will be for naught if you don’t take the upkeep seriously. “You have to be here regularly for your cleanings and exams,” Dr. Rajpal shares. “If we lose touch with you and you’re building up all this bacteria, you’re much more prone to getting gum disease, getting cavities, all of that.” She likes to see her patients with veneers every three to four months for cleanings (in addition to an annual exam), and she will sometimes recommend a night guard as well to protect the dental work. “[Veneers] can generally last years and years, as long as you’re maintaining them really well,” she notes.

At home, [brushing](https://aedit.com/aedition/electric-toothbrush-benefits) and flossing are the name of the game. “The mechanical motion of brushing and flossing is what you need to do to remove plaque from your teeth,” she explains. “The toothpaste is only so important – it’s more your brushing technique.” Both should be done at least twice a day, and people with certain gum conditions may benefit from adding a [Waterpik](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.walmart.com%2Fip%2FWaterpik-Ultra-Countertop-Water-Flosser-Oral-Irrigator-White%2F5740917) or [mouthwash](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-natural-oral-care-toothpaste-mouthwash-brands) to the mix. ## **The Takeaway**
No matter what treatment protocol you choose, the goal of cosmetic dental treatments should be to make the smile look as natural as possible in the healthiest way possible. “I really am focused on making sure the teeth last well through the years whether I am doing bonding or veneers or Invisalign®,” Dr. Rajpal says. Over the years, there have been a lot of misconceptions about [dental veneers](https://aedit.com/procedure/veneers). When we debunked the most common [myths about veneers](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-modern-porcelain-dental-veneers), we were most surprised to learn that veneers are not as high-maintenance or unnatural looking as we once thought. “[Well done] veneers are very simple to maintain,” says [Jack Bodie, DDS](https://aedit.com/provider/jack-bodie-8156), a cosmetic dentist in Dallas. “Maintenance issues are more common with veneers that have poor margins (fit) or are not designed well.” 

But even the best-fitting veneers require a bit of in-office and at-home care for long-lasting results, which is why we reached out to three top cosmetic dentists to learn how you can get the most mileage out of them. 

## **How to Care for Veneers**
Curious about how to extend the lifespan of your dental veneers? Follow these eight tips:

### **1. Practice Good Dental Hygiene**
Needless to day, good oral hygiene is important for everyone, but it’s the biggest key to lasting success for people with veneers. Professionally, you’ll also want to keep up with your semi-annual dental check-ups to monitor the health of your veneers. At home, proper dental care includes brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and using mouthwash as needed. 

Generally, flossing veneers should not be too difficult. If you are worried though about damaging or loosening the veneers, [Stacy Spizuoco, DDS](https://luxsmilesnyc.com/team/stacy-spizuoco-dds/), a cosmetic dentist at Lux Smiles in New York City, offers this technique: Insert the floss the way you normally would, but, instead of pulling it back out the same way, you can pull it through. She suggests using waxed floss, a rubber-tipped gum stimulator, or water flosser.

### **2. Stay Away from Hard Bristles**
Dr. Spizuoco recommends brushing veneers with a soft bristle toothbrush to preserve your beautiful smile. “The toothbrush should be angled 45 degrees into the gums, and, if you use a manual toothbrush, you should make small circles with [the] brush,” she explains. ### **3. Choose a Gentle Toothpaste**
Avoid abrasive toothpastes, as they can damage the porcelain of your veneers. So, what *exactly* constitutes an abrasive toothpaste? According to Dr. Spizuoco, it’s one with small particles in it, like baking soda or pumice. For the most part, these toothpastes have been taken off the market, but it's important to keep in mind. On the flipside, Dr. Spizuoco recommends looking for a gentle formula that promotes gum health. Her picks? ### **4. Steer Clear of Foods that Stain Teeth**
One great thing about modern veneers is that they are not prone to stains. “Veneers are made of porcelain, which is a non-porous sheet of glass,” explains [Anjali Rajpal, DMD](https://aedit.com/provider/anjali-rajpal-428), Beverly Hills-based cosmetic dentist. “They cannot absorb stains, so they hold their color better than natural teeth or composite bonding.” With that said, your natural teeth are not immune to the [damage of acidic foods and drinks](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-wine-stained-teeth). 

When your porcelain veneers are placed, your dentist will match them to the shade closest to your natural teeth. Acidic beverages and foods (think: [red wine](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-prevent-wine-stained-teeth), coffee, soy sauce, and soda) can discolor natural teeth, making them a different shade than the veneers. Use a straw or immediately brush your teeth afterwards to limit any discoloration, and, when all else fails, leave it to the pros. “Generally, it’s the natural teeth that can be whitened every so often to match the shade of the porcelain veneers, since the veneers are more color-stable,” Dr. Rajpal notes. 

### **5. Skip Hard Foods or Objects**
Just like good oral health, this tip is for everyone. As a rule, you should avoid chewing on hard foods or objects, but it’s extra crucial with veneers. That means steering clear of everything from ice cubes to hard candies, as they can chip or crack the veneers or, even worse, your teeth. You’ll also want to kick bad habits like nail biting or pencil chewing to preserve your new smile.

### **6. Avoid the Grind**
“Probably the most important thing is to wear a custom fabricated [night guard appliance](https://aedit.com/aedition/dental-appliances-for-better-sleep) to prevent tooth movement and damage from clenching and grinding,” Dr. Bodie explains. As it turns out, teeth grinding doesn’t just cause headaches or [jaw aches](https://aedit.com/aedition/botox-to-treat-tmj-disorders-and-jaw-slimming), it can also wear down your dental veneers. “The mouth guard will reduce the amount of muscular force on the teeth and cover their surfaces, which will prevent them from being worn down,” Dr. Rajpal explains. “The veneers should be adequately protected from wear while the mouth guard is in place.”

### **7. Don’t Smoke**
There are a million reasons to [quit smoking](https://aedit.com/aedition/impact-of-cigarette-smoking-vaping-on-skin-hair-teeth-health) and getting veneers is one of them. Just like acidic food and drink, tobacco can discolor veneers and natural teeth, in addition to negatively impacting your oral health in general. Consider kicking the habit before investing in veneers. 

### **8. Find the Right Provider**

With the holidays (and a long winter) around the corner, we might be pouring ourselves an extra glass — or two — of wine. While there’s nothing quite like a good, full-bodied glass of red, it can leave our pearly whites stained. “Red wine is famously high in tannins, an astringent biomolecule that can give wine ‘body’ and make your mouth pucker,” says [Alina Lane, DDS](https://www.allsmilesnyc.com/), a cosmetic dentist at All Smiles in New York City. “As delicious as they are for flavor, tannins have some characteristics that can make a drinker's teeth look darker.” 

To add insult to injury, red wine also contains acids and anthocyanins (pigments) that contribute to teeth stains. “The acid erodes the enamel making it more porous, and the tannins bind the pigments to the porous enamel,” explains [Stacy Spizuoco, DDS](https://onsitedental.com/location/nyc-midtown-1), a New York City-based cosmetic dentist with Onsite Dental and clinical instructor at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. While the tooth discoloration can be shocking at first, it's usually just temporary when addressed immediately. Follow these seven steps to prevent wine-stained teeth this holiday season.   

## **1. Brush First**
A quick and easy way to prevent wine stains (or any stains for that matter) is to brush your teeth right before pouring a glass of wine. “Before going out for the night, it is a good idea to [brush your teeth](https://aedit.com/aedition/electric-toothbrush-benefits), which will help to eliminate plaque, a soft biofilm that the tannins can cling to,” Dr. Lane shares. “When teeth are smoother and plaque-free, it is harder for the wine molecules to cling to the tooth surface.” While you can’t necessarily remove *all* the plaque from a single brush, you can remove most of it and minimize your chances of the dreaded purple teeth.

## **2. Don’t Start With White Wine** 
When in doubt, don’t mix your whites and your reds. “Some people believe that drinking white wine before red can stain your teeth faster,” Dr. Lane says. And there may be some truth to it. “Since white wine is generally more acidic and acid will roughen tooth enamel when it is exposed for long enough, the roughened enamel will catch the wine stains faster,” she explains.

## **3. Drink Sparkling Water** 
Alternating your refills with water isn’t just good for warding off a headache, it’s good for your teeth, too. “It’s a good idea to drink water between glasses of red wine to help remove stains from sticking,” Dr. Spizuoco suggests. “The water washes away the tannins and pigments.” 

If you have the choice, opt for sparkling. “It’s believed that sparkling water is best, as the carbonation will fizz to scrub away any stains similar to using club soda on clothing stains,” she adds. The bubbles from the sparkling water will help release the stains from the plaque. Swish it around your mouth (like mouthwash) for best results.

## **4. Use a Straw** 
Normally we advise skipping straws. They are an [unexpected cause of wrinkles](https://aedit.com/aedition/unexpected-causes-of-wrinkles-fine-lines-face-neck-chest), and the plastic ones aren't good for the environment. But drinking wine through a straw can help prevent staining. We can’t promise no one will judge you, but it will minimize the wine’s contact with your teeth *and* [preserve your lipstick](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-apply-lipstick).

## **5. Pair Your Wine With Cheese** 
Need an excuse to eat more cheese? Dr. Spizuoco has one. “Eating cheese while drinking red wine is not just tasty but beneficial in preventing stains,” she says. “Cheese has calcium in it that minimizes acidity in the mouth. Proteins also help in that they create a stain-blocking barrier on the enamel.” Music to our ears.

While cheese is definitely our first choice, Dr. Spizuoco notes that eating any food that is high in calcium will help. Leafy greens, legumes, or seafood are just a few calcium-rich foods to have on your radar. She also encourages people to strengthen the enamel to prevent stains. Vitamin D helps with absorption of calcium and [vitamin A](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-vitamin-a-retinol-retinoids-in-skincare) builds strong bones and teeth. 

## **6. Eat Fibrous Foods**
“Foods that have a lot of fiber also help prevent stains,” Dr. Spizuoco says. High fiber foods typically require a lot of chewing, and chewing causes you to make saliva. “Saliva is the natural way to wash your mouth and remove stains, bacteria, and plaque,” she explains. “Also, its pH is neutral, which combats wine’s acidity.” Celery is her top pick because it can also act as a natural floss and clean hard-to-reach places while eating. 

## **7. Use Wine Wipes**
A convenient way to instantly remove wine stains is to use wine wipes. The over-the-counter pads usually contain [whitening ingredients](https://aedit.com/aedition/professional-vs-at-home-teeth-whitening) like baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and calcium. While they are no more effective than brushing, they are certainly more portable. “Brushing your teeth and carrying a toothbrush around is probably not the most ideal when you travel, so a wine wipe is better than nothing,” Dr. Lane admits. 

## **Avoid This DIY Whitening Trick**
Theoretically, rubbing a lemon or lime on the teeth is a way to remove stains, but it does far [more harm than good](https://aedit.com/aedition/the-impact-of-candy-sugar-sweets-on-teeth-and-skin). “Although lime or lemon slices may effectively clean your teeth of wine stains, I would never recommend using this technique,” Dr. Lane warns. “The acidity of the juice will destroy the enamel, which will result in worse long term stains.” Instead, Dr. Lane recommends using one of the other methods outlined above, like eating a small piece of cheese or crunchy vegetable, to help cleanse your teeth without interfering with your [oral health](https://aedit.com/aedition/treat-prevent-mask-mouth-bad-breath-tooth-decay).

Ultimately, nothing will replace regular professional care. “The best way to prevent stains from red wine or anything else is to have a professional teeth cleaning at least every six months,” Dr. Spizuoco says. “The dental professional can remove any surface stains in a safe and effective way.” If semi-annual cleanings aren’t enough, [professional and at-home teeth whitening](https://aedit.com/aedition/professional-vs-at-home-teeth-whitening) is always an option to recover a brighter smile.

The Surprising Way Clear Aligners Can Define Your Jawline

A few months ago, I finally took the plunge and decided to get braces again. Yes, *again*. I had ‘train track’ (i.e. metal) braces when I was a teen, but they were removed early because I needed them off for scheduled surgery. Because I didn’t finish the protocol, I ended up with a gap between my front teeth. To make matters worse, I left my retainer on a seat in a Parisian departures lounge, and, despite my desperate emails to the lost and found department, my retainer (along with a makeup bag full of brand new [French pharmacy skincare](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-french-pharmacy-skincare-hair-care-products)!) was lost forever. 

After that episode, I never got around to getting a new retainer, and my teeth began to relapse into their pre-brace positions. Earlier this year, I decided to sort out my teeth nightmare once and for all with the help of [Invisalign®](https://aedit.com/procedure/invisalign). For the uninitiated, the system is an alternative to [traditional fixed braces](https://aedit.com/procedure/traditional-metal-braces) and is made up of a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually work to realign teeth. 

I’m now a few months into wearing the trays, and my experience has been largely positive so far. I have, however, learned a few things that would have been useful to know from the get go. Here are the things I wish I’d known before I started Invisalign®:

### **1. You May Not Need Molds**
Getting molds taken for my braces the first time around is one of the main things that put me off getting braces again. But, thankfully, my orthodontist now uses 3D scanning technology instead of molds, so you may not need to go through it at all. It should be noted that some practitioners still do use classic molds. If that’s a particular sticking point for you, it’s worth finding a practice that uses alternative methods.

### **2. The Discomfort Is Different Than Fixed Brace**
When I put my first tray in, the overwhelming sensation was tightness as opposed to pain or aching. I can distinctly remember my first few days with braces as a teenager being tinged with a constant ache — one that was only made worse when trying to eat. With Invisalign®, there wasn’t any pain at all. Instead, the tightness lasted a few hours, and I was able to eat as usual after taking the trays out. My teeth are a little sensitive when I take a new set of trays on and off, but it’s not enough to make me rethink what I’m planning to eat. Unlike traditional braces that would ache, prevent me from eating normally, and stab me in the cheek regularly, Invisalign® is a walk in the park.

### **3. If There Is Any Tightness, It Doesn’t Last Long** 
When changing trays, the tightening sensation usually lasts half a day at most. I was told by friends who had Invisalign® in the past to change my trays [before bed](https://aedit.com/aedition/sleeping-better-after-cosmetic-surgery-aesthetic-procedures), so you sleep through the worst of the tightness, and that’s a piece of advice that has been super helpful to me.  

### **4. Attachments May Be Needed**
Little ceramic ‘buttons’ are placed on teeth to add extra pressure points for your orthodontist to be able to move your teeth in the right direction as needed. The attachments stay in place throughout the period of your treatment. Once you get used to them, they’re barely noticeable, but they did feel a bit strange for the first week or so.

### **5. Your Mouth Can Get Really Dry...** 
...Or you might have a lot more saliva than usual. This is particularly the case during the first few days, but I do still find it’s an issue on occasion. It’s not a huge problem to have to deal with, but [dry mouth](https://aedit.com/aedition/treat-prevent-mask-mouth-bad-breath-tooth-decay) did make working out with my aligners a bit uncomfortable for the first week.

### **6. It’s a Commitment**
I’d forgotten how much of a commitment having braces was, and Invisalign® somehow feels more time consuming than fixed braces. Some days, I feel like all I’m doing is brushing my teeth (it’s usually around four to six times a day). Add in the visits to the dentist and hygienist and it does take up a decent chunk of time. At this stage of my life, I can accommodate it, but it’s something that needs to be considered if you have a hectic lifestyle or travel often. 

### **7. You’ll Become Really Aware of Your Coffee Intake** 
As you may know, you’re only supposed to drink water and clear liquid with your trays in. This doesn’t always mix well with a coffee habit. That being said, having Invisalign® is absolutely helping with cutting my caffeine intake. I’m snacking less, too, which is a welcome bonus — especially while working from home.

### **8. The Lisp Is Real** 
I read somewhere before deciding to go ahead that the system should actually be called *Invithalign* because the lisp is so bad when you first start out. They kind of had a point. The lisp is something I dealt with for about a month, it was particularly noticeable when I got tired. It didn’t necessarily interfere with my daily life, but I did have a couple of important phone calls during that I took them out for. In my case, it was really about adapting to the braces, and, after a while, the lisp pretty much disappeared.

### **9. Discipline May Be Fleeting**
Invisalign® takes more discipline than fixed braces. I thought I’d have no trouble keeping my trays in for 22 hours a day. But, a couple of weeks in, there I was leaving them out after eating breakfast because it wouldn’t be long before I had another coffee or taking them out in the evening because I was tired of trying not to have a lisp. Whenever I was particularly frustrated, I took a look at my predicted results and got back on track. 

### **10. The Attachments Can Get Stained**
Remember those little ceramic buttons I mentioned? They can get discolored by things such as — you guessed it — coffee, red wine, and other foods and drinks that are known to stain the enamel on your teeth. This means that, if you aren’t careful, the invisible effect of Invisalign® could be reduced because the ceramic gets stained. Cutting out the stain-inducing food and drink is the best solution. But, if you must drink coffee or wine, do so through a straw (with your aligners out, of course).

### **11. My Lips Look Fuller**
I’ve been putting off getting [lip fillers](https://aedit.com/procedure/temporary-lip-fillers) for years because I hate needles, but my lips look nice and plump when I’m wearing my clear aligners. I like them so much that, when I’m finished with Invisalign®, I will finally take the plunge and get my lips done. For now, though, it’s a nice bonus to have a fuller pout, even if they’re hidden under a mask most of the time!

### **12. Long Nails Are A Burden**
Getting the trays in and out can be tricky, especially when you switch to a new set. I found having [long nails](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-damaged-dry-brittle-finger-nails-cuticles) made it even more difficult to maneuver. There are little plastic hooks you can buy to help with that, but I decided to keep my nails short for the next few months. I also found that regular nail polish gets chipped easily when you’re removing trays, so gel polish has become my go-to.

### **13. Lipstick Can Be Annoying**
Lipstick wearers be warned, Invisalign® and bold lipstick don’t mix too well. Matte formulas tend to wear okay, but others make my mouth look like a crime scene. There are, however, tons of blog posts on the topic with lists of [battle-tested lipsticks](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-apply-lipstick) that are compatible with clear aligners. This being said, lip gloss is having a moment so you may just want to give that trend a try.

### **14. Your Teeth Feel Tiny When Your Trays Are Out**
It doesn’t take long to get used to having the Invisalign® trays in. In fact, when I don’t have them in, my teeth feel really small by comparison. For those of you who have had fixed braces in the past, it’s a similar feeling to that first day after you get your braces removed. Your teeth feel quite far back in your mouth. 

### **15. Results Come Quick**
I don’t remember noticing results very quickly with metal braces. I wore them for around three years and only started to see cosmetic improvements at the end of my treatment plan. This time around, I’m already seeing results. The gap between my front teeth is closing up and my bottom teeth are better aligned, too. Seeing those results makes the minor inconveniences all the more worthwhile.

A good electric toothbrush will beep every 30 seconds to encourage you to move on to the next quadrant of your mouth.”

The foaming agent may create the illusion of polishing teeth, but “studies show it can cause canker sores, dry mouth, gingivitis, and allergies – so really, not an ingredient you want lurking around in your mouth,” she cautions.   

But it’s not just toothpaste. Mouthwash and breath sprays can also feature irritants. Aloe and tea tree oil are common natural swaps that leave the mouth clean but not dry.
