Soft wax strips have long-dominated the [hair removal market](https://aedit.com/procedure/hair-removal-solutions), but more and more methods are becoming mainstream and quickly gaining popularity. Whether it's an updated take on traditional [waxing](https://aedit.com/procedure/waxing) or a modern iteration of ancient sugaring, all of these hair removal options do the job (and have some level of pain — let’s just get that out of the way up front!). 

With that said, some techniques are better suited for particular areas of the body and specific hair types than others. So, if you’ve ever wondered about the difference between all of these wax and sugaring options, we’re answering your burning questions.

## **Soft Wax Strips** 
- **The Method**: Wax strips (a.k.a. soft wax) is probably what you most associate with the term ‘waxing.’ The method involves heating up wax and applying it to the desired area with a wooden stick or applicator. Once the hot wax has adhered to the skin and hair, a paper or cloth strip is used to remove it from the body. Because the process also removes the first layer of skin, you can only go over an area once. To ‘clean up’ any remaining hairs, light tweezing is often employed. Compared to some of the other hair removal options, soft wax is generally considered a little more painful and a little more likely to cause irritation. So, if you have [sensitive skin](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-sensitive-vs-sensitized-skin), you might want to skip the strips!
- **The Ingredients**: As you may have suspected, soft wax is made of beeswax. It also usually has rosin, essential oils, and other ingredients to help soothe and moisturize the skin.
- **The Benefits**: Wax strips are quick and efficient, making soft wax ideal for treating larger areas (think: the arms and legs). It also tends to be the most affordable option on this list. 
- **Best For**: Large areas; those on a budget

## **Hard Wax** 
- **The Method**: If you’ve been a loyalist to soft wax strips, the idea of hard wax may be, well, hard to grasp at first (it was shocking — in a good way — the first time I tried it). Unlike soft wax, which requires a paper strip or cloth to be placed on top of the wax to remove it, hard wax does not. The wax hardens enough that it can double as the hair remover *and* strip. 
- **The Ingredients**: Like soft wax, hard wax is also made from beeswax. At [European Wax Center](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwaxcenter.com%2F), for example, the wax features a proprietary blend of beeswax and other European-sourced ingredients to soothe the treatment areas. “This wax is specifically designed to make waxing more comfortable,” notes EWC manager Gina Petak.
- **The Benefits**: According to Petak, a huge benefit of hard wax is that it adheres to the hair — not the skin. “This allows the wax to be placed over the same spot multiple times without skin damage, ensuring all the hairs are removed,” she says. As a result, many people experience less pain and irritation compared to soft wax, and I would have to agree. Another benefit of European Wax Center’s hard wax is its deep violet color that makes it much easier to see against skin. As a result, I find that there is a lot less waxy residue!
- **Best For**: Sensitive skin; all parts of the body; coarse hair

## **Film Wax** 
- **The Method**: Similar to traditional hard wax, a strip is not needed to remove film wax. At [Amazing Lash Studio](https://go.skimresources.com?id=170670X1638612&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazinglashstudio.com%2F) a wooden applicator is used to apply the film wax. “Stylists create a ‘lip’  — or thicker edge/tab — when applying the wax,” explains stylist educator Mariah. “Once dry, that lip acts as a tab to lift and remove the hardened wax from the skin.”
- **The Ingredients**: Film wax is a hybrid of soft wax and hard wax, which Mariah says offers “the best of both worlds.” At Amazing Lash Studio, the formula features hydrogenated polycyclopentadiene, a synthetic resin that serves as the sticky base for the wax and also allows it to be applied in a thin, film-like consistency. Paraffin, meanwhile, helps soften the skin and prevent irritation. There is no beeswax in the Amazing Lash Studio film wax, but other formulas on the market may contain it. 
- **The Benefits**: “Our pink film wax is very gentle on the skin, as it only clings to the hair,” she explains. As a result, technicians can reapply wax to the same area of the body if there is any hair remaining.
- **Best For**: Sensitive skin; all parts of the body

## **Sugaring** 
- **The Method**: While new to many of us, sugaring is actually an ancient method of hair removal that dates back to Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece. Instead of using wax, sugaring uses an organic ball of paste to remove hair — no strips or spatulas required. The technician works in smaller areas than in waxing, removing small amounts of hair more frequently. Overall, the pain level is considered more tolerable compared to traditional wax, but, when I first started sugaring, the constant pulling was a lot. My aesthetician regularly checked in to see if I needed a break, and the sensation became much more manageable after a few sessions.
- **The Ingredients**: “Sugaring utilizes a paste made from just three ingredients: sugar, lemon juice, and water,” explains Jade Haifa, master aesthetician at [DAPHNE Studio](https://daphne.studio/) in New York City. “It has no chemicals, fragrance, or coloring added, and it’s also hypoallergenic.”
- **The Benefits**: Haifa recommends “sugaring over waxing for those with sensitive and reactive skin” thanks to the simplicity of the formula and the fact that it is applied at room temperature (unlike hot wax). And then there are the results. “Sugaring pulls hair out by the root, and, because of this, the bulb will have to regrow and you won’t see hair resurfacing for a few weeks,” she explains. “The more frequently you go, the follicles get weaker with less blood flow to the area. Over time, hair becomes thinner and less noticeable.” 
- **Best For**: Sensitive skin; smaller areas (except eyebrows)

## **Preparing For Your Hair Removal Treatment**
The preparation for all waxing and sugaring treatments is the same. You need to avoid the sun for 24 hours before the session and make sure hair is about quarter of an inch long (think: the length of a grain of rice). “This helps prevent breakage of hair, which can lead to ingrowns,” Haifa says. For most people, that is about five days worth of hair growth, so don’t shave in the days leading up to your appointment. “Don’t worry, your hair can never be too long to come see us,” Petak notes. “All of our wax specialists are expertly trained to work with all hair and skin types.”

For the best possible experience, Haifa also recommends limiting your caffeine and alcohol intake “to prevent your pores from tightening the day of your appointment.” Depending on your pain tolerance, you may also want to consider skipping your workout on the day of your session. 
“[Exercise] accelerates blood flow, which can make you more sensitive to pain,” she cautions.

If you are wondering whether or not you should exfoliate prior to waxing and sugaring, the answer depends on the treatment area. To maximize results, Petak suggests exfoliating one to two days before waxing to remove dead skin and prevent ingrown hairs. So, how can you tell which laser treatments are right for [darker skin tones](https://aedit.com/aedition/the-best-skin-treatments-for-dark-complexions)? Here, we caught up with top dermatologists and an aesthetic nurse to find out why skin tone affects the outcome of certain laser procedures and the best [skin refining](https://aedit.com/aedition/ultimate-guide-to-skin-resurfacing-procedures) and [hair removal](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-use-at-home-laser-hair-removal-devices) laser options for those with darker complexions. 

## **The Relationship Between Lasers & Skin Tone**
Not all laser and light therapies are safe for all skin tones. Generally speaking, those who fall above type IV on the [Fitzpatrick Skin Phototype](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-fitzpatrick-skin-types) scale (the go-to measure of skin type for dermatologists) need to be careful when choosing a treatment. For the uninitiated, the Fitzpatrick scale was developed in 1975 by Harvard dermatologist Thomas B. Fitzpatrick, MD, to classify a person’s tendency to burn (erythema) versus tan (induce pigmentation) — providing an estimation of the amount of melanin present in skin cells. The original scale had four types and was later broadened to six. 

The best way to determine your Fitzpatrick skin type is to visit your dermatologist, but below are the general classifications for each: 

- **Type I**: Pale skin; light blue or green eyes; red or blonde hair; always burns, never tans
- **Type II**: Fair skin; blue or green eyes; blonde hair; burns easily, tans poorly
- **Type III**: Light brown to olive skin; hazel or light brown eyes; dark blonde or light brown hair; burns mildly, tans gradually
- **Type IV**: Olive to brown skin; dark brown eyes; dark brown hair; burns minimally, tans easily 
- **Type V**: Dark brown skin; dark brown to black eyes; dark brown to black hair; tans easily, rarely burns
- **Type VI**: Dark brown or black skin; dark brown to black eyes; black hair; never burns, tans easily 

Aesthetic lasers target water, red hemoglobin, or brown melanin in the skin. Skin types IV to VI have a higher concentration of melanin, which means there is a greater risk of damage if the laser is used incorrectly. “Patients with darker skin tones and who are tan are more susceptible to complications, which is why it’s essential to see a board certified laser expert and someone with many different tools in their kit,” says [Paul Jarrod Frank, MD](https://pfrankmd.com/), a board certified dermatologist in New York City. The damage caused by improper laser treatments is often permanent and ranges from [burns](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-first-second-third-degree-burns) and [scars](https://aedit.com/aedition/minimizing-scars-after-surgery) to hypo- and hyperpigmentation. 

But that’s not to say there aren’t cosmetic laser therapies that can safely be employed on a wide range of skin tones. When performed by a well-trained professional, there is an array of skin refining and hair removal treatment options. To ensure you’re visiting a provider with the right level of experience, Dr. Frank recommends [asking the following questions](https://aedit.com/aedition/questions-to-ask-your-doctor-during-plastic-surgery-consultation): 

1. Do you have more than one technology in your office to treat the various skin types?
2. Do you have experience with treating people with my skin type?

“Those are the two most important questions you can ask,” he says. And don’t be shy about asking to see before and after photos of patients who look like you — it can help you get a sense of how much experience the provider has. 

## **The Best Laser Treatments for Darker Skin**
Now that you have a better understanding of the relationship between skin tone and lasers, it’s time to learn more about which treatments are safe and effective. When it comes to refining skin tone and texture, [non-ablative](https://aedit.com/procedure/nonablative-laser-skin-resurfacing) (read: non-wounding), picosecond, and Q-switched lasers are the way to go for darker complexions and there have been some notable technological advances in the last decade. “The skin stays intact, so patients can use makeup during recovery and they can be used on darker skin types,” Dr. Frank says.

Generally speaking, Dr. Frank says longer wavelength technologies tend to be safest for darker skin tones. Tara Garrick, nurse and aesthetic laser specialist at [Neinstein Plastic Surgery](https://neinsteinplasticsurgery.com/) in NYC, likes the Lutronic Ultra™ because the non-ablative, thulium laser works deeper in the skin without damaging the surface layer. “It’s a customizable, comfortable laser with minimal downtime,” Garrick says. It can for address fine lines and wrinkles, melasma, [hyperpigmentation](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-treat-hyperpigmentation-with-skincare-cosmetic-treatments), acne and body scars, large pores, actinic keratosis, even [stretch marks](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-stretch-marks) in all skin tones, she notes.

### **Laser Treatments to Avoid**
Those with darker skin tones should avoid [traditional resurfacing lasers](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-ablative-laser-skin-resurfacing), like ablative [Fraxel®](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-fraxel-laser-skin-resurfacing-treatments) and [carbon dioxide (CO2)](https://aedit.com/procedure/ablative-co2-laser) devices, because there is a risk of permanent hyperpigmentation, says [Dendy Engelman, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/dendy-engelman-md-312), a board certified dermatologist in NYC. 

Other light therapies that are best to steer clear of? [Intense pulsed light (IPL)](https://aedit.com/procedure/ipl) and broadband light (BBL). “We need to be extremely cautious, as IPL and BBL are really not safe for dark skin tones,” Dr. Frank says. He often sees complications in patients inappropriately treated with IPL devices by inexperienced practitioners. “You need to have laser-specific technology that works well on darker skin tones,” he explains, adding that those typically include the longer wavelength therapies mentioned above.

## **Laser Hair Removal for Darker Skin Tones**
For many years, [laser hair removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-hair-removal) technology wasn't sophisticated enough to work for dark skin. “Traditionally, lasers work by beaming intense light at the follicle, which causes permanent damage so the hair no longer grows there,” Dr. Engelman explains. “The key was the contrast between the follicle and the skin.” That means people with fair skin and a dark hair follicle enjoyed the best results, while people with dark skin and dark hair or light skin and light hair didn’t have many options. 

In the case of patients with darker complexions, Dr. Engleman says the devices weren't able to distinguish between the skin pigment and the pigment of dark hair follicles. As a result, there was a risk of damaging the skin and causing hypopigmentation (light spots), blisters, or even scarring. Fortunately, the technology has come a long way. “I'm excited about the Nd:YAG laser, which safely penetrates deeper into the dermis, totally bypassing the pigment of the skin,” she shares, adding that the Q-switched device is the safest option for laser hair removal for darker skin tones.

The Deka Motus AX is another Q-switched laser that can effectively remove light *and* dark hair from all skin tones. “The one-of-a-kind wavelength used by the Motus AX allows for the treatment of fine and light hair, whereas most lasers are only effective for dark hair,” Dr. Frank explains. “Additionally, it is also effective for darker skin tones, which are not able to be treated with some other lasers.” Another benefit? It’s painless and requires half the number of sessions compared to standard treatments. “This laser is unique because it treats and heats the area very slowly, instead of the classic stamping technique of hair removal,” he says. “It also features a cooling system for increased comfort.”

## **The Takeaway**
While patients with darker skin tones should take special care in finding a provider, laser treatments (of all kinds) carry risks for everyone. “They are just instruments that rely on the performer,” Dr. Frank cautions. Generally speaking, you need to be careful using lasers on people with a history of [eczema](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-skincare-products-to-treat-eczema-flare-ups-in-the-winter) and [psoriasis](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-live-with-and-treat-psoriasis) or any type of skin disease, he says. The Best Laser Treatments For Darker Skin Tones

The stand-off between the two big light therapy therapies — [intense pulsed light (IPL)](https://aedit.com/procedure/ipl) and laser — may be most often associated with hair removal, but the truth is these two options come up against each other in other categories, too. These include skin resurfacing, acne treatments, facial rejuvenation, and more. While they both employ light, there are key differences that set them apart and dictate their pluses and minuses — but picking the one that’s right for you isn’t always as straight-forward as you may think. 

If you find yourself faced with a choice between the two (meaning you meet the skin and hair coloring guidelines for the IPL usage you’re considering), the preference tends to come down to your feelings about your pain threshold, time commitment, recovery, results, and price. Here’s how they measure up.

## **What Is a Laser?** 
‘Laser’ is actually an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.  Lasers “use one strong wavelength targeting a specific chromophore,” explains [Julie Russak, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/julie-russak-md-4645), a board certified dermatologist and founder of Russak Dermatology Clinic in New York City. That means they give a more concentrated pulse of light that penetrates deeper than their cousin, IPL, and they’re particularly good at stimulating [collagen](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-collagen-in-skincare-supplements-aesthetic-medicine). 

And, as we covered in our [guide to laser skin resurfacing](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-ablative-laser-skin-resurfacing), there are an array of tools to choose from. “Specific color wavelengths can better address certain skin issues,” Dr. Russak shares. “At the lower end of the color spectrum, [blue light](https://aedit.com/aedition/difference-between-professional-at-home-led-therapy) combats acne, targeting a more superficial depth of penetration into the skin where these lesions reside. At higher wavelengths, light can penetrate deeper into the skin, targeting brown pigment and even deeper for skin tightening.”

There are also subcategories of lasers to be aware of. “Skin resurfacing lasers can be [ablative](https://aedit.com/procedure/ablative-nonfractional-lasers) or [non-ablative](https://aedit.com/procedure/nonablative-nonfractional-lasers),” explains [Hadley King, MD](https://www.drhadleyking.com/), a board certified dermatologist and a clinical instructor of dermatology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in NYC. “The basic difference is that ablative lasers remove the top layer of skin, while non-ablative lasers work by heating up the underlying skin tissue without harming the surface, so that your body will produce new collagen.”  

## **What Is IPL?**
IPL stands for intense pulsed light. Like lasers, IPL uses light to treat the skin, however, “in the case of IPL, we use multiple wavelengths of light to address red and brown pigment in the skin, to tackle hair removal, and to stimulate neocollagenesis,” Dr. Russak says. 

While not as mighty as the laser, the pluses here are that IPL is usually less painful, is considered a ‘lunchtime treatment’ with little to no downtime, and, thanks to the use of different light wavelengths, can sometimes deliver dual results in one treatment. And because the ‘head’ of the device is larger and can cover more surface area, the sessions themselves tend to be shorter. It should be noted that IPL can only be used on lighter complexions, as “the risk of burning the skin increases with darker skin tones,” Dr. King explains.

## **What Do Lasers & IPL Do for Skin?**
Research shows IPL can be effective for improving [wrinkles](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6983864/), [blood vessels and vascular lesions](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6983864/),  [sun spots](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15004823/), [acne](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3051300/), and [skin texture](https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamadermatology/fullarticle/407425). And the list for lasers is even longer, with more benefits seen in correcting [acne scars](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4134658/), [tattoo removal](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4411606/), and overall resurfacing ([one study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7118506/) finding that after a two year follow-up 100 percent of patients reported feeling the treatment had improved their skin). 

When both are an option, the decision is often a trade-off between the degree of results people are seeking versus the intensity of the treatment. For instance, Dr. King says that for “true resurfacing” she recommends lasers. But, for the right candidate, IPL (sometimes called a photofacial) is her treatment of choice for sunspots. There are exceptions here, though. Dr. Russak points out that IPL is not recommended on patients with melasma or who tend to [hyperpigment](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-treat-hyperpigmentation-with-skincare-cosmetic-treatments) easily. “The heat can cause overproduction of pigment,” she says.

Now that you generally understand what they can do for the skin, here’s what you need to know about the treatments:

### **IPL vs. Lasers:** What’s the Difference in Downtime?
IPL is usually said to have [less downtime](https://aedit.com/aedition/category/recovery), but there are cases where lasers outrun it. Dr. King insists the amount of time it takes for side effects to subside “will depend entirely on the laser and what settings are used for either the laser or the IPL.” Dr. Russak agrees, explaining that just because lasers reach deeper does not mean you always have a longer recovery period. However, if you’re talking ablative lasers, IPL is the clear winner in this department. “Typically, if you are comparing a skin resurfacing laser that compromises the surface, yes, you would have more downtime than IPL,” she says. 

On the flip side, some uses of IPL can end up with a more substantial recovery than you might expect. An example: “In an aggressive setting where the goal of using an IPL is primarily to address brown spots on the skin … in order to get those great results, you will require more downtime,” Dr. Russak notes.

### **IPL vs. Lasers:** How Many Treatments Will You Need?
When going head to head, laser therapy tends to require fewer treatments to see results — but it really depends on your specific case. “IPL will usually require a series of several treatments,” explains Dr. King. “With laser treatments, it will depend on the intensity of the particular laser.” Some require a series while others may only be performed, at most, once a year at most.

### **IPL vs. Lasers:** What’s the Difference in Price? 
If you’re under the assumption that IPL is less expensive, you’re not wrong. But it doesn’t always work out that way. “Price always varies depending on strength of IPL or laser, downtime, results associated, number of treatments to achieve results, and technician experience,” Dr. Russak says. So, you might want to price out your options with your doctor to see which is better for your wallet *and* your needs in the end.  

## **Which Is Best for Hair Removal?**
While this article was to focus on lasers and IPL for skin resurfacing, we’d be remiss not to mention how each can be used to [remove unwanted hair](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-use-at-home-laser-hair-removal-devices). First, a note: The way IPL interacts with melanin is why it isn’t recommended for darker skin tones — and it also means that folks with naturally light hair are not candidates to use it for hair removal either, as it won’t ‘find’ the hair. You also can’t have a sun tan, even if it came from a bottle. “IPL can not tell the difference between pigment within the skin caused by damage or pigment within the skin making up the patient's natural skin tone,” Dr. Russak shares. 

If you happen to qualify for both [laser hair removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-hair-removal) and [IPL](https://aedit.com/procedure/ipl-for-unwanted-hair), studies have shown both IPL and laser treatments to have an impact on halting hair growth. One [study found](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25229781/#:~:text=The%20diode%20laser%20was%20more,results%20in%20axillary%20hair%20removal.) that, in separate groups receiving one of the two treatments, both saw a significant reduction after six sessions (though the IPL treatments took place over a longer period of time). The study’s authors noted that while “the diode laser was more effective,” it was “more painful than the IPL.” Yet another reason why pain tolerance is often a determining factor in this decision for patients. 

## **The Takeaway**
Both lasers and IPL can have skin resurfacing and hair removal benefits, but it’s important to determine whether you are the right candidate. IPL for any purpose is usually only an option for those at the lighter end of the [Fitzpatrick scale](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-fitzpatrick-skin-types), while those with light hair are not a good fit for hair removal. Lasers, meanwhile, may come with a higher price tag and more downtime but often offer more variety. Needless to say, hand-held hair removers are not as powerful as their in-office counterparts. But, as I look at my dull razor, I can’t help but wonder: Do at-home hair removal devices live up to the hype?

Professional [laser hair removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-hair-removal) is a type of laser therapy that employs pulsating, highly concentrated light deep into the skin to target and destroy the hair follicles. Treatments are scheduled around the hair growth cycle, which is why sessions tend to be scheduled every four to six weeks. It can be used on most parts of the body to remove unwanted hair with semi-permanent to permanent results. Larger limbs like legs and arms are commonly treated, as are smaller areas like bikini lines, underarms, the upper lip, and chin.

But following the directions is key for achieving the best and safest results. “At-home lasers generate light energy that, when not used properly, can also burn the skin,” he says. “Because lasers must pass through our skin to reach the hair follicle, the skin necessarily absorbs some of that energy.”

Because of this, Dr. Adar recommends avoiding photosensitizing medication (think: antihistamines, tetracycline antibiotics, oral contraceptives) and skincare and minimizing sun exposure four weeks before introducing the at-home hair removal device and for an additional two weeks after.

### **2. Don’t Forget a Patch Test**
As a best practice, Dr. Adar recommends doing a small test spot and waiting a few days to see how your skin reacts. “Never double pulse on the same spot,” he warns. “Most devices have sensors that will only allow you to fire it when there is full contact with the skin.” That sensor is also meant to protect your peepers. “Never point any laser toward your eyes, as the back of the eye (i.e. the retina) has light-sensing cells that can be damaged and in extreme cases cause permanent blindness,” he says.

### **3. Never Pluck or Wax** 
Since the lasers target the pigment in the hair follicles, they need to be present in order for the treatment to be effective. Instead, Dr. Adar recommends shaving before each treatment to prevent the hairs above the skin from being too long and absorbing the light energy, thus diminishing effectiveness of the device.

I recommend starting at the lower setting and working your way up.”

### **6. Prepare for Some Discomfort** 
Since the energies used in at-home devices are lower than in-office options, they are generally better tolerated with lesser side effects. Most patients feel a zap (similar to snapping a rubber band), and some mild discomfort may be involved. Dr. Adar recommends icing the area beforehand, pointing a cool fan at the targeted area during treatment, or applying a topical anesthetic to ease pain. 

### **7. Maintenance Is Key** 
IPL hair removal delivers long-term hair reduction, though maintenance will likely be needed to keep the target area free of fuzz. After your initial four to eight sessions, touch-ups can be spaced out four to six weeks apart. Dr. Adar explains that this timing is due to the life cycle of the hair follicle. “Each treatment destroys the hair follicle in place, and the hair that regrows comes in thinner and lighter,” he says. “So, these procedures are better named ‘laser hair reduction’ rather than ‘laser hair removal.’”

### **8. Avoid These Areas** 
When it comes to treating skin around the eyes, tattoos, moles, or other types of skin lesions, be sure to consult with a board certified dermatologist first to avoid any unintended damage.

For people with the optimal complexion and hair color, at-home laser hair removal systems can deliver quite a bit of bang your buck. The one-time investment of $200 to $500 for the device is less than the cost of a series of professional hair removal sessions, though patience will be key. “Although these devices have a favorable price point relative to in-office lasers, there is a considerable time investment for the DIY approach,” Dr. Adar says. “This is due to the smaller spot size on the devices and the lower energies.”

Permanently removing unwanted body hair is more affordable and easier than ever before. But before you throw away your razors and cancel your wax appointment, you need to decide which method of hair removal is best for you. We interviewed board certified dermatologist Jeanette Black, MD, on what the differences are between the two most popular methods: laser hair removal and electrolysis. 

## **Laser Hair Removal** 

### **How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?**
[Laser hair removal](https://aedit.com/procedure/laser-hair-removal) is a type of laser therapy treatment that works by pulsating highly concentrated light deep into the skin, which is absorbed by the hair’s pigment. Believe it or not, laser hair removal is one of the most [common cosmetic procedures](https://aedit.com/aedition/8-non-invasive-cosmetic-treatments-that-save-you-time) in the U.S. and is similar to [Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)](https://aedit.com/procedure/ipl), but is not the same. This treatment creates heat which kills the hair follicle, preventing further hair growth. 

Treatments are scheduled around the hair growth cycle, which is why sessions need to happen every four to six weeks. When the hair is in its active growth cycle, it absorbs more of the laser’s light, which in turn creates sufficient heat to destroy the follicle. Each session targets new follicles until most of the hair has been destroyed.

### **What Is the Laser Hair Removal Process?**
The laser hair removal process has been compared to the feeling of having a rubber band snapped against the patient’s skin. Getting laser hair removal can be uncomfortable, however, so can other procedures such as [waxing](https://aedit.com/procedure/waxing). While it is mildly uncomfortable, the sessions typically don’t last long. Depending on the area being treated, it can take anywhere from 15 minutes (for smaller areas like the lip or underarms) to an hour or two (for a longer treatment like both full legs).  

“Laser hair removal sessions should be performed after a new cycle of hair growth grows back,” Dr. Black advises. “In areas with dense hair and faster regrowth, treatments can be done monthly. Patients should wait until hair has grown back before re-treating and this might mean that treatments start to become more spread out as hairs start to regrow slower. Many patients start with treatments every four weeks and progress to treatments every six to eight weeks, and eventually progress to treatments every to eight to 16 weeks.”

Preparation for the procedure is minimal. You should shave one to two days before the session, avoid tanning including sunless tanners, and skip skincare products the day of the treatment. According to Dr. Black, “it is ideal to have short hairs that have been recently shaved or trimmed, but it is important that patients are careful and avoid getting irritation from shaving prior to laser hair removal treatments.”

While it is not mandatory, some patients find taking ibuprofen an hour before the treatment can reduce the pain. If you are especially sensitive to pain, you can even apply a numbing solution to your skin ahead of time, just make sure to run it by the clinician first. 
 
### **Who is the ideal candidate for laser hair removal?**
One of the ideal candidates for laser hair removal would be patients with darker colored hair, due to the energy in the laser being attracted to the follicle pigment. The ideal laser hair removal patient has fair skin with darker hair. 

That is not to say that people with blonde hair cannot see benefits from laser hair removal, but those people might be better off with specific lasers like Diode or Ruby that are specifically designed for people with less pigmentation. As for people with darker skin, they are not recommended to use laser hair removal therapy since the lasers cannot distinguish the pigment in the hair follicle from the pigment in the skin. As a result, the laser can possibly cause permanent discoloration. 

Since complexion is a critical factor in the success of the treatment, it is important to get a consultation to discuss your specific skin tone and hair color. If laser hair removal is not for you, they may be able to refer you to a different treatment that would be more suitable for your coloring. 

Regardless of your complexion, it is important to note that results are not always guaranteed. Some people see hair regrowth after several months or years whereas others never have to pick up a razor again. 

### **How do you choose a provider for laser hair removal?**
When it comes to choosing a salon or clinic for laser hair removal, price is obviously an important factor, but it should not be the only one. Depending on the area you are looking to treat, laser hair removal can cost anywhere from $100 to $2,000 per session, not including tax. Do your due diligence when researching and remember that you should only work with a board certified dermatologist or a licensed technician. 

### **Is there maintenance involved after laser hair removal?**
The primary maintenance post-laser hair removal is keeping up the sessions until you achieve the desired results. After each session, it will take about two weeks for the targeted hair to fall out. While you will see results after your first treatment, it typically takes around six sessions to see significant reduction. “If the skin is more pigmented, the laser settings will need to be decreased for safety reasons and this may mean that the patient will require more treatment sessions,” Dr. Black says.
 
Most report seeing about a 75 percent reduction in hair growth after six sessions. That said, the procedure does require maintenance. For best results, it is advised to go in for additional sessions once a year for the first few years. 

## **Electrolysis**

### **How does electrolysis work?**
[Electrolysis](https://aedit.com/procedure/electrolysis) is another type of hair removal procedure that disrupts hair growth with the use of shortwave radio frequencies instead of light. Unlike laser hair removal, electrolysis is considered a permanent solution, according to the FDA. A device called an epilator, which is a very fine needle usually thinner than a strand of hair, is placed into the skin through the natural opening of the hair follicle. The epilator emits a small electrical current to destroy the follicle and prevent growth.  

### **What is the electrolysis process?**
The electrolysis process will come in sessions that last from 15 minutes to one hour, depending on the size of the area being treated. Like with laser hair removal, electrolysis can provoke mild pain or discomfort. Many patients have described the sensation as a prick or a shock. Precautionary measures are the same as laser hair removal where patients can take ibuprofen or apply numbing cream ahead of time. 

Dr. Black also advises that patients avoid any kind of stimulants including caffeine. They “may make sitting through electrolysis sessions more difficult,” Dr. Black says. “It is best to be relaxed and well-rested before any kind of hair removal treatment to minimize discomfort.”

Like with laser hair removal, there is also a proper procedure for maintaining your hair. “The hairs can be trimmed, but they need to be long enough for the technician to easily pick up the hairs with tweezers,” Dr. Black shares. “It is best to avoid pulling out hairs in any way including tweezing, threading, and waxing between either laser hair removal or electrolysis treatments as these hairs won’t be available to be treated during their next session and will grow back untreated.”

The biggest difference between electrolysis and laser hair loss is the number of sessions required. Electrolysis is a big commitment. Depending on the area and the person, some patients may need up to 30 sessions to remove all hair. 

### **Who is the ideal candidate for electrolysis?**
Since electrolysis uses radio frequencies rather than light, it attacks the follicle itself and does not rely on pigment making it a viable option for all types of complexions. However, it should be warned that previous tweezing and waxing can make the process a little more difficult. Tweezing and waxing can alter the shape of hair follicles, making it harder to get the epilator into the root. Additionally, electrolysis is only for the committed since it can take around a year and a half to see full results. Talk to your technician ahead of time to understand what you can expect. 

### **How do you choose a provider for electrolysis?**
Because so many sessions are required for electrolysis, prices run lower than laser hair removal. Depending on the area, each session can range from $30 to $200. As with any other cosmetic treatment, it is critical that you work with a board certified dermatologist or trained technician. Always ask for a consultation before committing to a treatment plan.

### **Is there maintenance involved after electrolysis?**
Like laser hair removal, electrolysis depends on the hair growth cycle so maintenance will be in the form of follow-up treatments. “As only one hair can be treated at a time with electrolysis, the number of treatments required depends on many factors including the amount of hair being treated, the speed of the technician, and the thickness of the hair,” says Dr. Black. “Large areas with dense hairs may require more time to treat and this might mean that these areas are broken up into several treatment sessions.” However, once the unwanted hair is gone, it is gone forever.
