Physical alteration with no downtime and visible results in a matter of months may as well be a tagline from the outdated infomercials of the ‘90s – these in-office options seem too good to be true, right? Before getting into aesthetic medicine, I viewed non-surgical [body contouring](https://aedit.com/procedure/body-contouring-solutions) as a gimmick to get people in the door. Often promising instant benefits, it felt as though there was some trickery going on behind the scenes. However, after speaking with countless experts, reading testimonials, and seeing other patients’ results ([here’s one example](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-emsculpt-neo)), I knew I wanted to try a [non-invasive body contouring](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-surgical-nonsurgical-body-contouring-procedures-for-women) procedure myself.

But wait, there's more! The treatments shave 30 minutes off the [45-minute version](https://aedit.com/procedure/trusculpt) of years past. The muscle-stimulation device calls for four 15-minute sessions within a two-week period to improve strength, tone, and tautness. 

For me, the goal has always been to increase strength and add volume to my buttocks, which I haven’t been able to achieve with workouts alone. ## **What Is truSculpt® Flex+?** 
In simplest terms, truSculpt® Flex+ “is an electrical muscle stimulation machine,” Dr. Alvarez explains. It is cleared by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the improvement of abdominal tone, strengthening of the abdominal muscles, and development of a firmer abdomen. It is also cleared for strengthening, toning, and firming the buttocks and thighs. At his practice, the technology is regularly employed on the arms, abs, glutes, thighs, and calves.

For two weeks in January, Dr. Alvarez became my personal trainer of sorts – shaping my buttocks while offering insight into the treatment and, at times, providing me with emotional support during the more intense parts of the glute-building experience. A diplomate of the [American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine](https://www.aaamed.org/) and member of the [American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery](https://www.cosmeticsurgery.org/), Dr. Alvarez informed me that truSculpt® Flex+ uses a proprietary Multi-Directional Stimulation technology “to target specific areas of the muscle imitating the motions we would do at the gym.” What separates this from a workout, however, is that “the Flex+ allows us to do it in 15 minutes,” he notes. 

So, what happens in these 15 minutes of muscle-growing? “It’s 54,000 contractions, different motions of the muscle such as pulling, compressing, twisting, and even bouncing to stimulate them,” he explains. “This replicates the motions we’d do in the gym, but it surpasses that past exhaustion.” 

## **What Is the truSculpt® Flex+ Treatment & Recovery Like?**
Unlike other muscle-building procedures on the market that have one or two paddles, truSculpt® flex+ has the ability to treat eight areas simultaneously. In my case, all eight squares were placed on my buttocks (four on each butt cheek), but they could theoretically be spread out to treat more than one area at a time. “Once a person comes in, and their medical history is assessed, we examine the areas to make sure we don’t treat over bone,” he explains. Then the gel pads are placed on the target areas, followed by the electrodes that contract the muscles. 

During the sessions, Dr. Alvarez increases the intensity of each paddle. He is a de facto personal trainer in the sense that he observes the patient's needs and pain tolerance to determine intensity. Being no stranger to [injectables](https://aedit.com/aedition/qwo-for-cellulite-before-and-after-photos) and other [high-tech devices](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-like-to-get-tracie-martyn-red-carpet-facial), I was game to push myself to the limit in an effort to maximize results. Anyone who has tried a muscle-stimulating body sculpting device knows that it creates a tingling, almost ticklish sensation during the contractions. The body spazzes and releases all on its own. In the first few minutes – the “tone” portion, as Dr. Alvarez explained – the experience was ticklish, but it soon progressed to the “sculpt” setting where a more uncomfortable feeling kicks in. 

At the end of my first session, I managed to progress to 70 percent intensity, which took a while to adjust to. By the end of my last session, I had reached the mid-nineties. If I’m being honest, it hurt. However, as the machine switched off, the pain instantly went away. The best thing I can compare it to is the pins and needles of a leg falling asleep – multiplied by a thousand. Alas, no pain, no gain.   

As far as recovery and post-treatment soreness, there was none. After each 15-minute session, I walked out of Dr. Alvarez’s office and forgot about any discomfort in a matter of minutes. Soreness was also nonexistent for me, unlike the aching inability to walk after a heavy lifting session. Consider me a convert. 

## **Who Is a Candidate for a truSculpt® Flex+ Butt Lift?** 
Apart from those with a recent surgical scar, certain injuries, or metal device in their body (think: pacemaker or internal defibrillator), most people are candidates for truSculpt® Flex+. “This machine is great for someone who has some [sort of injury](https://aedit.com/aedition/emsculpt-for-post-surgery-recovery) and isn’t ready to go back and put in the work, but they need to strengthen those muscles for their mobility,” Dr. Alvarez says. Those seeking improvement in their muscle tone and strength will see gradual enhancement. 

While many might perceive this as a fat-burner, truSculpt® Flex+ does not provide those benefits. Instead, [truSculpt® iD](https://www.cutera.com/solutions/trusculptid/) is monopolar radiofrequency (RF) body sculpting platform for fat reduction, and the procedures pair well together for patients who are candidates. “There is no fat loss associated with truSculpt® Flex+,” Dr. Alvarez says. “You’ll build those muscles, but you have the fat layer on top and the skin.” If you think the treated area looks leaner, it’s just an illusion. “Because the muscle increases, it compresses the fat,” he explains. “So, what you are seeing is not actual fat loss.” 

I am 30, have built a decent amount of muscle on my own, and have no conditions that would prevent me from getting the treatment. My age and relatively healthy lifestyle theoretically set me up for success and speedy results. However, truSculpt® Flex+ isn’t just for the young and fit. During a session, I met another one of Dr. Alvarez’s patients who is in her fifties. Like me, she treated her bum and saw a marked improvement in volume, shape, and even quad definition. Clearly, age isn’t a factor with the multi-directional device.  

## **When Do You See Results From a truSculpt® Flex+ Butt Lift?** 
Because I opted to go higher on the intensity level, I was able to see results quickly. Individual results vary (especially when you consider diet and lifestyle factors), but, for my behind, there was a visible improvement by the two-week mark. A perkier and more volumized posterior were the first signs. And, when it came to function, I was truly impressed.

For the duration of the treatments, Dr. Alvarez told me to lay off any glute workouts. “I usually tell patients to wait 24 to 48 hours before doing any other exercise,” he says. “It is like going to the gym – the recovery period is also important.” Having opted to dial back my workout regimen per Dr. Alvarez’s instructions, I focused the few workouts I did on the upper body during that two-week period. But, after my treatments were complete, I immediately felt the difference and it helped me surpass my plateau. While my quads and hamstrings required a jumpstart to get back on track, my glutes were able to handle more weight. 

When it came to [diet](https://aedit.com/aedition/meal-plans-diet-before-after-cosmetic-surgery) (a huge element of successful body contouring treatments), Dr. Alvarez recommended sticking to high-protein and larger water intakes as my body adjusted and recovered. I followed his specifications and increased my protein intake with a [protein shake](https://aedit.com/aedition/whey-protein-acne-breakouts) immediately after each session.

Technically, the ‘final’ results are enjoyed after three months after your final session. Because it’s a muscle-building treatment, that increased mass [needs to be maintained](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-to-do-after-nonsurgical-body-contouring). Needless to say, you’re not going to be able to replicate 54,000 contractions in 15 minutes at the gym, but bum-sculpting exercises can help prolong the effect. You can also head back in for maintenance truSculpt® Flex+ treatments. The results can only get better (and bigger) with time. 

## **How Does truSculpt® Flex+ Compare to a Traditional Butt Lift?** 
Four sessions of truSculpt® Flex+ gave me the butt lifting effect I was after, but Dr. Alvarez emphasizes that not everyone will see the same results and the results are not meant to compare to a [surgical butt lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/butt-lift) or [Brazilian butt lift (BBL)](https://aedit.com/procedure/brazilian-butt-lift). A traditional butt lift removes sagging and excess skin and places strategic sutures to provide internal support that firms and contours the backside. A [BBL](https://aedit.com/aedition/brazilian-butt-lift-procedure-safety), meanwhile, takes liposuctioned fat from one area of the body and injects it into the buttocks for increased volume and more lifted appearance.

truSculpt® Flex+ builds and strengthens the glutes, which lifts and sculpts the buttocks. Depending on your aesthetic goals, the increased muscle mass may be too subtle for your liking. But, as someone who is not willing to commit to the downtime and recovery associated with surgical butt enhancement, a perkier posterior in two weeks without any impact on my daily life is about all I could ask for.

## **My Takeaway** 
It’s safe to say that, by word of mouth, the 15-minute treatment has gotten a lot of buzz in my circles. Personally experiencing the powers of this technology, I was able to put the gimmick perception I had to rest while converting a few others. With no recovery – and I mean none – I was able to go about my life, feel strong, and have the confidence of knowing I went to the right provider.

The idea of a perfectly round, smooth, and sculpted backside has propelled significant demand for the [Brazilian butt lift (BBL)](https://aedit.com/procedure/brazilian-butt-lift). Despite the fact that the infamous procedure has had its time in the spotlight for a myriad of reasons — celebrities who embrace the bigger-is-better booty push the surgery to the top of many women's surgery wishlists, while the dangerous links to embolisms and even death make the BBL front-page chatter — its popularity has hardly waned. New and improved versions, as well as plenty of [safety regulations](https://aedit.com/aedition/brazilian-butt-lift-procedure-safety), keep the butt-boosting surgery in the public eye.

Aesthetic trends and beauty ideals are ever-changing. For some, a larger-than-life posterior remains the goal. But that level of curvaceousness isn't on everyone's agenda. If a tweak is more your speed, then you'll be happy to meet the so-called skinny BBL. The traditional BBL isn't going anywhere (it's still a much-requested option for those with enough fat to achieve the voluminous look), but the toned-down skinny BBL is better suited for those with a limited amount of donor fat who are desiring a subtler enhancement. 

This time around, it's less about volume and more about contour, says [Alexander Earle, MD](https://www.pureplasticsurgery.com/about-us/dr-earle/), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Miami. “Typically, the skinny BBL patient wants a curvier look – not an exaggerated one – that from the front has more of an hourglass shape and looks like an upside-down heart from the back," he says. So, who is a candidate for this slimmed down version and how does it differ from the original? We’re breaking down everything you need to know about the skinny BBL.

## **The BBL Basics**
The popular BBL brings to life the notion of taking fat from where it's unwanted and putting it where it is. First, your plastic surgeon performs [liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/liposuction) to remove unwanted fat from the lower back, waist, stomach, or other areas. Then, the donor fat is purified and transferred to the hips and butt to create a [lifted, shapelier buttocks](https://aedit.com/procedure/buttocks-enhancement-solutions) with a dramatic difference between the waist and hips.

In order to achieve this result, a decent amount of fat is needed. As such, “it is not uncommon for traditional BBL patients to be a little overweight by medical standards,” says [Zachary Filip, MD](https://www.aiplasticsurgery.com/zachary-filip-md/), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Temecula, CA. This usually means there is enough excess fat for harvesting purposes, especially when a significant increase in volume is the ultimate desire.

## **The Skinny on the Skinny**
A skinny BBL is a modified version of its big sister, the traditional BBL. Its name stems from the lesser amount of fat used and that the procedure accommodates leaner and smaller-framed patients who may not have as much donor fat. The skinny BBL is similar to a traditional BBL in just about every way except for the outcome. It is designed for those who want a more natural, athletic-looking result. 

Another key difference between the two BBLs is the amount of fat harvested and injected, says [Kevin Tehrani, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/kevin-tehrani-md-91), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York City. Less fat leads to more emphasis on shape rather than size. “Similarly to patients who [pick smaller breast implants](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-choose-the-right-breast-implants), those who choose skinny BBL are interested in minor buttock enhancement,” he shares. Rather than completely overhauling the backside and taking it from small and flat to large and voluptuous, the skinny BBL creates more of a ‘booty pop,’ similar to the results of a diligent yet intense workout routine. It also corrects stubborn hip dips.

A standard BBL removes up to 5,000 cubic centimeters (CCs) of fat via liposuction and places 1,000 to 2,000 CCs into each butt cheek. The remaining fat can be used elsewhere, like under the eyes, or discarded. Since there's less fat removal with the modified technique (think 500 to 1,000 CCs), about 500 to 700 CCs or slightly more per cheek is put into the butt to create its new shape. Keep in mind that, in either case, a percentage of this fat will be reabsorbed by the body (more on that below).

Another plus to the skinny BBL is that the added fat addresses [hip dips](https://aedit.com/aedition/cosmetic-procedures-for-hip-dips) (a.k.a. trochanteric depressions). These indentations or inward-facing curves are hard to correct with exercise and diet. In fact, Dr. Earle says that the more you work out, the worse they can get. One thing to note: this area does not ‘hold’ fat like the buttocks, so there is a chance that the hip dips may return at some point.

## **Who Is the Skinny BBL Best For?**
A skinny BBL makes the BBL a viable option for leaner patients who do not necessarily have stubborn or problem areas of extra fat but want to improve the shape of their butt. “Patients usually weigh in the lower half of ‘normal’ for their height,” Dr. Filip says. Most patients have a BMI of about 20 to 24. In the past, plastic surgeons often rejected these patients for BBLs because they were ‘too skinny’ with too little fat for harvesting purposes. However, the procedure is now safe and effective for lower-BMI patients thanks to improved fat harvesting techniques and [cannulas](https://aedit.com/aedition/guide-to-injectable-techniques-needles-for-botox-filler).
 
So, can someone be too thin for even the skinny version? It is possible (particularly if a patient has a BMI under 20), but plastic surgeons can perform a skinny BBL on thinner patients because the fat removal is from more unconventional areas like the inner knees, arms, calves, and back of the armpits. “We are almost always able to harvest enough fat,” Dr. Tehrani says. “[Water-assisted liposuction](https://aedit.com/procedure/water-jet-assisted-liposuction) is a great option since studies show that the technique allows us to harvest more fat compared to other liposuction techniques.” Another benefit? “There is also better take of the fat, so more of it survives," he adds.
 
Besides fat, other options for thinner patients who want to enhance their rear end are biostimulatory [Sculptra®](https://aedit.com/procedure/sculptra) injections. The downside is that these injections last two years (at most) and require a lot of product, so it gets expensive quickly. There are also [silicone buttock implants](https://aedit.com/procedure/butt-augmentation-with-implants), which work well in thinner patients but are less common today due to their high complication rate. “For these reasons, the best option is to gain weight and reach the appropriate BMI before skinny BBL surgery,” Dr. Earle says. Anyone who is medically underweight for any reason will not be cleared to undergo cosmetic surgery (of any kind) until they can maintain a healthy weight.
 
## **Skinny BBL Recovery**
In terms of [recovery](https://aedit.com/procedure/brazilian-butt-lift-fat-grafting/recovery), the surgery is considered one of the more difficult procedures to recoup from due to the extent of [commitment, protocol, and length](https://aedit.com/aedition/brazilian-butt-lift-bbl-recovery-healing-process). And there's not much difference between the two types of BBLs. “Patients still need to avoid pressure to the buttocks and hips for six weeks, use [compression garments](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-compression-garments-after-cosmetic-surgery) for at least three months, and undergo post-liposuction lymphatic massages,” Dr. Earle says. “The biggest difference is that skinny BBL patients require more [post-surgery lymphatic massages](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-lymphatic-drainage-massages-after-cosmetic-surgery) — about 25 to optimize the results — than the traditional BBL patient.” 

In addition, your plastic surgeon may also place a surgical drain to assist in emptying any [tumescent](https://aedit.com/procedure/tumescent-liposuction) solution used during liposuction, says [Martin Benjamin, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/martin-benjamin-md-34666), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Scottsdale, AZ. And, of course, all patients should maintain a [healthy diet](https://aedit.com/aedition/meal-plans-diet-before-after-cosmetic-surgery) and [exercise program](https://aedit.com/aedition/when-to-start-exercising-again-after-cosmetic-surgery-procedures) (when given the all-clear to do so) post-op to keep up their results.
 
## **Less Fat Does Not Equal Lesser Results**
Just because there's less volume added to the butt during a skinny BBL doesn't mean the results are less striking or short-lived by any stretch of the imagination. Still, there are some nuances to be aware of. According to Dr. Tehrani, the survival rate of a typical fat transfer is about 60 percent. “That means if we inject 1,000 CCs per side, 600 CCs, on average, will survive,” he explains. Fat absorption is one reason why plastic surgeons prefer to over-inject fat. “However, this approach is not always an option for skinny patients, as they may not have enough fat for overcorrection,” he says. “So, we use ACell MicroMatrix®, which contains stem cells that have special growth factors that improve fat survival by 20 to 30 percent.”
 
Regardless of how much fat your plastic surgeon transfers, the outcome should ultimately be permanent. As Dr. Filip shares, “once a patient heals, the results should be stable and long-lasting if they maintain a healthy weight.”

The Popular BBL Is Getting A Major Makeover

We know, the [Brazilian butt lift (BBL)](https://aedit.com/procedure/brazilian-butt-lift) is a highly sought-after surgical procedure that everyone seems to be talking about these days. Those who have spent any time online lately have likely seen documentation of the efforts of many to return home post-op (be it by flight or car). What makes the journey so notorious (and social media-worthy) is the precarious sitting positions required to travel safely without causing damage to the treated areas. However, post-BBL, it appears that all areas are, shall we say, sensitive. And comfort and some semblance of normality are days, if not weeks or months, away. 

If you’re considering a BBL, there is a lot of research to be done. We’ve already covered the importance of [finding a reputable and qualified provider](https://aedit.com/aedition/brazilian-butt-lift-procedure-safety) to give you those hourglass curves. And, now, it’s time to discuss the realities of the [BBL recovery process](https://aedit.com/procedure/brazilian-butt-lift-fat-grafting/recovery) and what to expect once you’ve been nipped and tucked. Spoiler: there’s a lot.

## **The First Few Days After a BBL**
In some ways, the beginning stages of the BBL recovery mirrors other cosmetic surgeries. “Like any surgery, the first week usually entails the most intense pain, [swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery), decreased mobility, and some degree of bruising,” explains [Ryan Stanton, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/ryan-stanton-md-644), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Beverly Hills. Additionally, he notes that, despite minimal incisions (fat is harvested via liposuction from a donor site and then injected into the buttocks), recovery entails a bit of cleanup. “Often, there is also fluid leakage from the areas of the very small liposuction cannula incisions,” he shares. “This is very normal for the first 12 to 24 hours.” 

What makes BBL recovery unique is not just the lack of mobility or the discomfort, but rather the cocktail of considerations. “Patients are expected to change dressings as needed, take prescription pain medication as ordered, and wear provided compression garments,” says [Kurtis Martin, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/kurtis-martin-md-34658), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Cincinnati, Ohio. Your surgeon and/or surgical team will likely check in before then, but “patients should have their first follow-up visit one week following their procedure,” he adds. 

While the exact recovery protocol will depend on your surgeon, here are a few things to keep in mind about the healing process:

### **1. Sitting & Standing**
You probably already know this, but “sitting or laying on the buttock is prohibited for anywhere from two to 12 weeks,” Dr. Stanton shares. Most commonly, the restrictions will last three to six weeks, but clearance will vary by surgeon and patient. 

You may not be able to sit on your butt for any real length of time, but that doesn’t mean you can or should be totally comatose. In fact, Dr. Stanton recommends mindful movement. “Standing and walking within the home is actually encouraged to help fluid and blood circulation and thus minimize the risk of blood clots,” he explains. Dr. Martin also suggests light physical activity – such as standing up or taking short walks within a secure space. 

What can’t be on the agenda? Squatting, [exercise](https://aedit.com/aedition/when-to-start-exercising-again-after-cosmetic-surgery-procedures), sex, and strenuous activities that raise blood pressure. Sitting will also be monitored and limited to under 10 minutes in the first few weeks. In the month following, you can usually bump up to 15-minute intervals. Alternate sitting, standing, and walking with laying face down to prevent blood clots and maintain strength.

### **2. Pain Management**
For pain management, providers usually prescribe specific medication, however, that is not the only factor to consider as it relates to physical discomfort. “I think most surgeons would agree that a caregiver is necessary for the first 48 hours postoperatively or, at the very least, the first night while the patient is still recovering from anesthesia and may be unstable on their feet/ambulating,” Dr. Stanton says. 

We often note that a caregiver is necessary for leaving the OR after anesthesia, but, once you’ve made it to the comfort of your bed, [an aide](https://aedit.com/aedition/plastic-surgery-recovery-nursing-concierge) will prove vital. From providing the medication to helping with bandages, a companion (be it a partner, friend, or professional) can ease stress and give the patient that much less to worry about. 

### **3. Hygiene**
While bandaged up, limited in movement, and feeling sore from head to toe, showers and bathroom visits will be difficult. To prepare for this, Dr. Martin recommends over-the-counter stool softeners, staying hydrated, and eating a [balanced diet](https://aedit.com/aedition/meal-plans-diet-before-after-cosmetic-surgery) with fiber and protein to keep you regular and avoid strain on your digestive system. When you can safely bathe again will be indicated by your surgeon.

### **4. Compression Garments** 
[Compression garments](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-compression-garments-after-cosmetic-surgery) are common in body contouring procedures, and BBL is no exception. “Our patients are provided with a special garment that provides compression in the liposuction areas while allowing for the buttock to be open without pressure,” Dr. Martin says. Experts can’t stress enough the importance of adequate rest as you recover. Sitting or sleeping on the gluteal area can create asymmetrical results, which is why pressure should be avoided at all costs. ## **The First Few Months After a BBL**

From bootylicious backends to perfectly plump and lifted derrieres, the advancements in [butt augmentation and contouring](https://aedit.com/procedure/buttocks-enhancement-solutions) continue to grow as patients demand options. “There are a lot of celebrities these days who flaunt full buttocks and fans, naturally, want to get the look,” says [Norman Rowe, MD](https://www.normanrowemd.com/), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York City. “While celebrity surgery inspiration isn’t new, the rate at which social media plays into the popularity of full buttocks is driving demand for buttock-enhancing procedures through the roof.”
 
One such method that has taken social media by storm? The butt thread lift. This newer, non-surgical treatment option purports to provide more lift and contour, but these dissolvable threads are not necessarily an equal substitute for other long-standing butt augmentation procedures, like butt implants, filler, and the oh-so-popular [Brazilian butt lift (BBL)](https://aedit.com/procedure/brazilian-butt-lift), which uses fat to augment the size and shape of the behind. 

With many plastic surgeons calling the safety and efficacy of the butt thread lift into question, we decided it was time to investigate the controversial procedure. Here’s what you need to know. 

## **All About Threads**
Let’s take a step back for a moment. In general, [thread lifts](https://aedit.com/procedure/thread-lift) have come and gone, and they are currently back again. In the early 2000s, permanent threads were problematic and posed significant issues, including visible bunching under the skin, perforations, and breakage. These older threads were made of barbed sutures and used firm, unforgiving materials that should have never gone into the face. Case in point: They were said to be so fragile that a simple sneeze could dislodge one.

The threads used today have come a long way. “There is a constant evolution of threads ranging from permanent to absorbable, smooth to barbed, sharp needle insertion to a cannula,” says [David Shafer, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/david-shafer-md-153), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in NYC. Today, both NovaThreads and [Silhouette InstaLift](https://aedit.com/procedure/silhouette-instalift), two of the most popular manufacturers of threads for lifts, are approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and far more reliable than past options. These threads (and others) use dissolvable [polydioxanone (PDO)](https://aedit.com/procedure/pdo-thread-lift) and poly-L-lactic acid (the same material used in Sculptra®). “Certainly, the current absorbable barbed threads with cannula insertion are a great leap forward over older generations of threads,” he notes.

Threads are essentially impermanent sutures that give an understated yet visible lift to the skin, but they also have a longer-term effect. Over time, they work “by creating collagen within the skin,” says [Paul Jarrod Frank, MD](https://www.instagram.com/drpauljarrodfrank/?hl=en), a board certified cosmetic dermatologist in NYC, which helps to offset the natural decline in collagen production we all experience with age. Most doctors use threads to lift the cheeks and eyebrows and to define the jawline and other facial areas. More recently, threads are being experimented on lifting the breasts, [knees](https://aedit.com/aedition/best-cosmetic-procedures-for-knees), arms, and buttocks. Butt thread lifts make use of threads to create a rounder, shapelier, and more lifted backside. 
 
There is, however, plenty of misinformation about just how much the treatment can accomplish. Instagram videos and images of multiple threads and needles coming out of a person’s face or body can be very dramatic. “Threads give the option for instant results,” Dr. Shafer says. “Unfortunately, there is a misperception by patients — and I think a purposeful deception by some — that threads are equivalent to surgery.” This is simply not the case. “They are not equivalent to what can be accomplished with surgery, especially not in terms of longevity,” he notes. 
 
So while these second-generation dissolvable threads are considered safer and more effective than their predecessors, there is only so much a thread lift can do on any part of the body.
 
## **What to Expect from a Butt Thread Lift**
Regardless of where on the body threads are used, the details and steps of the procedure are the same. Before the threads (different lengths, sizes, and thicknesses are available based on the treatment area and desired results) are inserted using either needles or cannulas, [the area is marked](https://aedit.com/aedition/purpose-of-a-plastic-surgeons-markup-pen-during-cosmetic-surgery), paying close attention to naturally occurring fat regions. 

Next, [anesthesia](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-anesthesia) is injected and applied topically to the skin’s surface to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Then, the threads are inserted under the skin (the thread must pass through the fat that lives between the skin and muscle) and pulled from the insertion point through to the ending point — the threads will act as a scaffolding of sorts. 

As with any procedure, the skill of the provider is paramount. To avoid complications, it is important that the threads are not placed too superficially or too deep. Initial results take a few weeks to notice, and the full effect is visible after a few months. 

After the first four to six months, the threads will begin to resorb (no need to worry, it’s completely safe). As they break down, collagen forms to add volume that lasts upwards of two years. If you’re not happy with your new booty, the threads can be surgically removed before they dissolve. 

## **Threads vs. Other Butt-Enhancing Procedures**
Ever since the rear end became a point of significant focus, women across the globe are taking to butt-enhancing procedures and treatments to increase the size and shape of their back side. Brazilian butt lifts, buttock implants, butt fillers, and butt thread lifts all add volume, but each works differently. Depending on your anatomy and aesthetic goals, some are better options than others. Here’s how all of the popular options stack up:

### **Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)** 
Perhaps the most notorious surgery for creating a dramatically shapelier backside with more projection, [BBLs](https://aedit.com/aedition/brazilian-butt-lift-procedure-safety) make use of your own fat. “That’s one of the biggest upsides to the procedure — besides more projection — is the removal of unwanted fat via liposuction,” says [Finny George, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/finny-george-md-98), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York. After harvesting the fat from the stomach (or elsewhere), it is purified and spun down (so that only pure fat remains) and then re-injected into the butt. It should be noted that not everyone who wants the procedure is a contender for it. “The ideal candidate is healthy, does not have any clotting or bleeding disorders, has a BMI between 22 and 35, can avoid sitting on their buttocks for two weeks, and has a lack of buttock projection or desires more projection,” Dr. George says.

- **The Pros**: No use of implants or foreign materials in the body; minimal scars are faint and well-hidden under bathing suits and underwear.
- **The Cons**: According to Dr. George, the downsides to BBL are bruising, pain, and generalized discomfort. “There is a small risk of developing a blood clot or a fat embolism,” he cautions. “However, your surgeon can mitigate these risks with careful planning and technique.”

### **Butt Filler** 
This non-surgical butt enhancement uses [biostimulatory fillers like Sculptra®](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-dermal-fillers). Injecting Sculptra® off-label into the upper part of the butt creates a rounder, fuller, more lifted derriere. The filler also prompts the body to kickstart its collagen production. “If the patient is thin or does not want surgery, Sculptra® is an excellent alternative,” Dr. George says.

- **The Pros**: Minimal downtime and recovery 
- **The Cons**: A series of about three treatments spaced several weeks apart is usually required, and the results generally become visible at around six months. Another factor? The price. “Keep in mind that fillers, although great, can be cost-prohibitive,” Dr. Shafer says.

### **Butt Implants** 
Silicone butt implants are surgically inserted under the muscle of the butt through an incision in the butt crease to augment its size and shape. These days, many patients opt for filler or BBL over a [traditional butt implant](https://aedit.com/procedure/butt-augmentation-with-implants) because they tend to yield a more natural look.

- **The Pros**: Silicone implants do not usually rupture or leak
- **The Cons**: There is a high risk of displacement and infection. “Implants have fallen out of popularity due to their complication profile and revision rate,” Dr. George notes. “As a result, they are not something that I, and many other plastic surgeons, offer.”

The most notable difference between threads used in the buttocks and other butt-improving treatments is that the threads require no harvesting, incisions, or injections. “Unlike other methods, there is no physical addition of volume directly to the area,” Dr. Rowe explains. The tiny collagen-based threads can somewhat lift the skin and, according to Dr. Shafer, help boost the tissue. “Threads may be an option for a very thin patient with slightly loose skin,” he says.

However, just like all other butt-enhancing procedures, threads are not without risk. “The risks are similar to threads used in other parts of the body in terms of depth of placement,” Dr. Shafer shares. “Unintentional superficial placement can lead to visible threads or indentations, while unintentional deep insertion has a higher risk of bruising, pain, and lack of efficacy for the threads.” As he explains, there often is a disconnect between patient expectations and what the threads can achieve. “Once the patients start walking, moving, and pulling, the treads just can’t hold up,” he says. For these reasons, he does not perform thread lifts in the buttocks region. 

## **Are Butt Threads the Way to Go?**
Despite all of their attention lately, many doctors do not feel that backside threads are the best option. “In my practice, we use threads on the knees and arms but not on the butt,” Dr. Frank says. “I just don’t see a current option for them in the butt because, in my opinion, they are not thick or strong enough to suspend tissue in that area with that type of weight.” Additionally, the results just aren’t enough. “I don’t think threads significantly lift the tissue or create the amount of collagen development for improvement in the texture and tone like heat and fillers,” he explains.

Seeing as thread lifts have already come a long way, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that they will one day be a reliable butt lift alternative. “As technology and innovation continue, threads or some similar derivative will improve with longer-lasting results, a more dynamic rather than static material, and, hopefully, an enhanced biostimulatory effect to build natural tissue and help rejuvenate aging tissues,” Dr. Shafer says. 

## **The Takeaway**
While the butt thread lift is still very new, most doctors feel there is much improvement and fine-tuning needed to make it a viable and comparable enhancement option for all body shapes and types. For those in good shape and at an ideal weight, threads may help smooth and lift the buttocks, but the results won’t last as long as something like a BBL or even filler. For now, a butt thread lift is probably not worth the investment, but that’s not to say all is lost. “Thread technologies may change, and it will probably improve,” Dr. Frank says. “I hope we can use them in the future for greater suspension.”

So-called ‘hip dips’ — indentations found along the side body below the hips and above the thighs — are natural and harmless, but we all seem to be obsessed with them. [Google trend data](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%201-m&geo=GB&q=hip%20dips) shows that searches for the term (and it’s sister expression, ‘violin hips’) have soared this year. So, what’s driving the interest? We’re breaking down everything you need to know about hip dips and hear from two patients who chose different procedures to correct them.

## **What Causes Hip Dips**
Hip dips or violin hips refer to the inward curves that sit just below the hip bone. Instead of the outer curvature of the hip being rounded, it’s indented. Hip dips are generally caused by the skin being tethered to a deep part of the thigh bone, and how visible they are depends on the width of the hips and the shape of the pelvis. For some, this indentation is barely noticeable. For others, it’s more prominent. 

Despite living healthy and active lifestyles, people often find these dips won’t budge due to the anatomy of the indentations themselves. No matter how many times you do exercises that purport to target hip dips (think: squats, lunges, and deadlifts to increase muscle mass around the thighs and buttocks), those who are genetically predisposed to having them are unlikely to see much of a change because the lack of volume cannot be addressed. 

## **Hip Dip Treatment Options**
We said it before, but it bears repeating: Hip dips are natural, and there is no medical need to treat them. But, if they bother you, that doesn’t make them any less frustrating. Diet and exercise are unable to provide a whole lot of assistance, but there are some cosmetic procedures that can address the contour of the hips. With both non-surgical and surgical solutions available, we’re rounding up the most common hip dip treatment options.

### **1. Fillers for Hip Dips**
- **Average Cost:** $800 to $1,000 per vial
- **Downtime:** No exercise for 24 hours
- **Anesthesia:** Local

The same fillers that you turn to for facial rejuvenation and contour can also be used to sculpt and volumize certain areas of the body, too. In the case of hips dips, providers can employ the filler to, well, fill out the indentations for a smoother, more streamlined silhouette (note: there are currently no fillers approved by United States Food and Drug Administration for hip augmentation, though some are used ‘off-label’ to improve hip contour). [Sculptra®](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-dermal-fillers), a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) injectable, is often the go-to for addressing hip dips because it is considered a collagen stimulator (meaning it helps the skin rebuild collagen and, thus, improve volume loss). 

Both on the face and body, a series of treatments (spaced about four to six weeks apart) are needed. For hip dip correction, six to 10 vials of Sculptra® may be needed per session, which, if you are doing the math, can quickly become costly. It should also be noted that results are not immediate — they gradually reveal themselves over the course of four to six months. The benefit of Sculptra®, however, is that those results can last two years or more. 

There is no downtime associated with Sculptra® injections, though your provider will likely tell you to refrain from exercising for the first 24 hours. The most invasive and permanent procedure to correct hip dips is hip implants. The implants are usually custom-molded for the patient and made of silicone. Instead, they are more solid, do not leak or rupture, and are designed to look and feel like natural muscle tissue. Patients typically return home the same day.

I can’t sugarcoat it: It was painful and having to avoid sitting and sleeping on your hips is more of a problem than I first expected it to be. There was a decent amount of bruising, too. The discomfort and swelling mostly eased within four or five days. I was able to start going on long walks at 10-days post-surgery and gradually built back up to my normal activity over six weeks in total. Once the swelling went down, I was so happy to see the results — especially because I don’t need to keep having injections to keep up this fuller appearance! My biggest advice would be to get a complete list of things you can’t do after surgery when you first consult your surgeon. That will give you time to plan your life a bit to make sure everything is in place and you can just rest and recover.

Often, much of the discourse around cosmetic procedures comes down to risk versus reward. The [Brazilian butt lift (BBL)](https://aedit.com/procedure/brazilian-butt-lift) has risen in the zeitgeist as a [body contouring](https://aedit.com/procedure/body-contouring-solutions) option for those in search of a curvier backside. The procedure, used to enhance the posterior and shrink the waist, saw a spike of 28 percent [from 2014 to 2015](https://www.plasticsurgery.org/news/blog/recovering-from-a-brazilian-butt-lift?_gl=1*1wkvtap*_ga*MTI1OTk5Mjg2Mi4xNjIyMDMyNTQ5*_ga_2N9PTXXTDN*MTYyNDM5MTIxNS4yLjEuMTYyNDM5MTU1MC41OQ..), according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), and it’s shown no signs of slowing down since. 

Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, and Kim Kardashian have all been credited with popularizing the hourglass figure in recent years, while stars like [Cardi B have admitted](https://www.gq.com/story/cardi-b-invasion-of-privacy-profile) to seeking a [butt augmentation](https://aedit.com/procedure/buttocks-enhancement-solutions) through dangerous means. No matter how mainstream it becomes, it’s impossible to ignore the headlines that call the safety of the BBL into question. With a mortality rate once reported at one in 3,000, the procedure had the dubious distinction of being the most deadly cosmetic surgery. 

So, when countless glute sessions and a strict diet can’t carve out your desired rump, a body contouring procedure can do the trick. But – and it's a big butt – are the risks of BBL worth the reward? We ask the experts for everything you need to know about the Brazilian butt lift procedure, the ideal candidate, the risks, the recovery, and more. 

## **What Is a Brazilian Butt Lift?**
In the simplest of terms, a [Brazilian butt lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/buttocks-enhancement-solutions) is a fat transfer procedure. It consists of performing liposuction on one or more areas of the body (think: thighs, abdomen, flanks) to harvest fat that is then transferred to another (i.e. the buttocks). It’s a minimally invasive, two birds, one stone procedure that offers a solution for those wanting to slim down certain areas while augmenting another. 

But, as [Nima Naghsihneh, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/nima-naghshineh-md-600), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon and director of Dr. Nima Plastic Surgery in Pasadena, California, explains, the name ‘Brazilian butt lift’ is a bit of a misnomer. “In plastic surgery, ‘lift’ typically implies incisions,” he says. “In this particular case, there are no incisions. Instead, the ‘lift’ is a result of adding volume in the form of one's fat.” 

Unlike a traditional [butt lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/butt-lift), which requires the removal of excess skin (often after major weight loss), a BBL does not require surgical dissection because it solely addresses the volume of the buttocks via fat transfer. It can, however, provide a more lifted appearance for patients who are experiencing drooping as a result of volume loss. “It is essentially a [buttock augmentation](https://aedit.com/aedition/what-its-really-like-to-get-a-butt-augmentation),” Dr. Nima notes, and some prominent surgeons have even argued for [officially changing the name](https://journals.lww.com/plasreconsurg/Fulltext/2020/01000/A_Changing_Paradigm__The_Brazilian_Butt_Lift_Is.58.aspx).

## **What Happens During a Brazilain Butt Lift**
During a BBL procedure, “fat is harvested via liposuction from various body areas (a.k.a. ‘360 lipo’),” says [Ryan Stanton, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/ryan-stanton-md-644), a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Beverly Hills. Once it’s retrieved, “the fat is prepared by a wide variety of modalities – because there is no proven best one – then re-injected into the buttock cheeks and/or hips,” he adds. What lures many patients in is the minimal scarring that accompanies this procedure because “no surgical dissection required,” Dr. Stanton says. But he is quick to add that the benefit is also “why many uncertified plastic surgeons can and do perform it” (more on that below).

When it comes to anesthesia, [Kevin Tehrani, MD](https://aedit.com/provider/kevin-tehrani-md-91), a double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon and founder of Aristocrat Plastic Surgery and Medaesthetics in New York, says he typically uses [general anesthesia](https://aedit.com/aedition/everything-you-need-to-know-about-anesthesia) because it “is safe in young, healthy patients.” 
It also is the best way to ensure patient comfort. “The biggest problem with local anesthesia is that there is a limit of how much can be used,” he explains. “If it’s not enough, the patient will be in pain.” Local anesthesia may be an option, however, for patients undergoing what Dr. Tehrani calls a “small” or “skinny BBL.”

## **Recovering from a Brazilian Butt Lift**
To ensure a smooth recovery from a Brazilian butt lift, some thoughtful planning is in order. Dr. Nima recommends getting fitted for a [compression garment](https://aedit.com/aedition/benefits-of-compression-garments-after-cosmetic-surgery) prior to the procedure. “These garments are critical and decrease swelling and bruising but can be difficult to put on if they do not fit properly,” he cautions. Once you get home from surgery, don’t expect to be sitting around much — if at all. “Sitting is prohibited for at least two weeks (six weeks for some surgeons’ protocol), except for 10 to 15 minutes sitting up for eating or using the restroom,” Dr. Stanton explains. Because this procedure involves multiple areas of the body, the first few weeks can be uncomfortable. [Swelling](https://aedit.com/aedition/how-to-treat-minimize-swelling-after-cosmetic-surgery) and bruising are to be expected, and Dr. Stanton says that “several different types of pain and anti-inflammatory medications are prescribed” to ease discomfort. Another tip? “Icing around the clock is also extremely helpful,” he adds.

As it relates to resuming normal movement and activities, Dr. Stanton says some patients are cleared to sit up for 20- to 30-minute intervals around the two-week post-op mark. They are also allowed to stand up and take short walks “for at least 30 seconds before sitting back down.” By week three, patients can move around for up to an hour, and “unlimited walking” returns at four weeks.

Patients can usually return to work after two or three weeks (as sitting and basic daily activities become easier), but you will be advised to be careful with exercise and sexual activity until the six-week mark. At that point, most restrictions are lifted. If introduced gradually, more intense [physical activity](https://aedit.com/aedition/when-to-start-exercising-again-after-cosmetic-surgery-procedures) (think: squats, lunges, and sports) can be resumed as well, Dr. Stanton says. 

### **Resuming Normal Activities After a BBL**
- **2-Weeks Post-Op**: Sit up for 20 to 30 minutes; stand up for at least 30 seconds 
- **3-Weeks Post-Op**: Stand up and move around for up to an hour; return to work
- **4-Weeks Post-Op**: Unlimited walking resumes with limits on more strenuous activity 
- **6-Weeks Post-Op**: Most restrictions lifted

Each surgeon has their own unique recovery protocol, so recovery looks different for everyone. It’s also important to note that your healing will also be influenced by where your fat was harvested from. “If we do liposuction on several areas like arms, thighs, back, the recovery may take longer,” Dr. Tehrani says.

## **The Ideal Candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift**
As with any cosmetic procedure, not everyone will be a candidate for a Brazilian butt lift, and, as Dr. Tehrani says, “safety comes first.” As such, “patients with high BMI are generally considered to be at a higher risk of complications after any surgery, and BBL is not an exception,” he explains. After all, “liposuction is not a weight loss but a contouring procedure,” he adds.

The best candidate for a BBL is a patient who is close (within 10 pounds) to their [ideal weight](https://aedit.com/aedition/why-you-should-lose-weight-before-plastic-surgery), is active, and takes the necessary health precautions given by their surgeon of not smoking, drinking, and [monitoring their supplement intake](https://aedit.com/aedition/vitamins-supplements-to-avoid-before-cosmetic-surgery) pre- and post-op. This will help to ensure the surgeon can perform “the procedure safely” and the patient “gets the best results after the procedure,” he notes.

## **The Risks of a Brazilian Butt Lift**
While all procedures come with risk, the Brazilian butt lift has a somewhat dangerous reputation. Below are some of the potential risks, complications, and short- and long-term effects of the procedure: 

### **1. Volume Loss & Asymmetry**
Volume loss is to be expected after any [fat transfer](https://aedit.com/aedition/comparing-dermal-fillers-vs-fat-grafting-for-facial-rejuvenation-contouring) procedure, including a BBL. Dr. Nima says you can “expect to lose 20 to 40 percent of the volume that is injected” during the initial establishment period. The benefit of fat grafting is that there is no risk of the body rejecting it, but, on the flip side, the body will continue to reabsorb the tissue. “For most patients, only about 20 or maybe 30 percent of the fat survives and is permanent,” Dr. Stanton says. 

Additionally, asymmetric results can occur as a result of uneven sitting post-procedure or the surgeon’s technique. While it may be possible to correct, it will depend on the health and stability of the patient.
 
### **2. Fat Necrosis**
Fat necrosis occurs when an area does not have adequate blood supply. It manifests as “firm lumps of fat that have turned to scar,” Dr. Nima explains. “These can be tender but often improve over time.” The lumps are not cancerous.
 
### **3. Oil Cysts**
These small cysts are “composed of liquefied fat as a result of fat that did not ‘take,’” Dr. Nima says. They are typically not painful, but, if they begin to cause discomfort, it is recommended to speak with your provider. 
 
### **4. Death** 
The controversy surrounding BBL and its mortality rate mostly centers around the placement of fat. “The real killer, literally, with this surgery is where the surgeon is transferring the fat into,” Dr. Stanton says. “After extensive research over the last five years, it is now well known and globally accepted that fat injected (a.k.a. ‘transferred’) into the gluteus muscles is the fat that embolizes into the bloodstream up into the lungs, heart, or brain and causes death in approximately 3,000 to 10,000 patients.” 

Plastic surgery societies around the world do not advise placing fat into the gluteus muscles but rather the subcutaneous buttock cheek fat layer. However, he acknowledges that “fat survival is quite poor in the fat layer when compared to the muscle layer.” Herein lies the BBL conundrum: “[Surgeons are] damned if you do, and damned — but life-saving — if you don't,” Dr. Stanton says.
 
Data indicates that these new techniques have gone a long way toward increasing patient safety. While a 2017 survey from the [Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF) determined](https://academic.oup.com/asj/article/40/8/864/5822125?login=true) the BBL mortality rate to be one in 3,448, it decreased to one in 14,952 in 2019. The 2019 figure indicates mortality has reached an acceptable level that is similar to that of [abdominoplasty](https://aedit.com/procedure/abdominoplasty) (one in 13,193).

## **A Note on Finding the Right BBL Provider**
[Finding the right provider](https://aedit.com/aedition/finding-the-right-plastic-surgeon-dermatologist-or-cosmetic-dentist) is crucial for any procedure, but it is of added importance for BBL. As we mentioned above, the minimally invasive nature of the procedure paves the way for uncertified providers to offer it, yet proper training and technique are a matter of life and death. “There were several cases all over the news when unqualified practitioners performed BBL and their patients died,” Dr. Tehrani says. “As long as your board certified plastic surgeon takes all precautions, uses a blunt cannula, and stays superficial, death should never happen.” As all surgeons should, he also recommends the patient is in optimal health at the time of the procedure.   

## **Alternative BBL Treatments**
A Brazilian butt lift isn’t the only way to enhance the buttocks. Reasons for seeking cosmetic surgery vary, as we found out when we spoke to three patients who have had butt augmentations. Here's what they had to say.

### **Naomi*, Long Beach, CA** 

Naomi had a fat transfer procedure a year before deciding to undergo butt implant surgery. She noticed the results from her initial procedure diminishing around six months after the operation and sought a more permanent solution. “I was so happy with the result of my fat transfer, but as time went by the results became less pronounced. I didn’t want to get into a cycle of having fat grafting surgery frequently, and also didn’t have enough fat to transfer over and over, so I started looking into butt implants as an alternative.”

**The AEDITION**: *As someone who has had both surgical procedures, how would you say the recovery time compares?* 

**Naomi**: “The pain from the implants has been much less than from the [butt lift](https://aedit.com/procedure/butt-lift). The day after surgery, the pain was pretty similar for both procedures, but I slept most of the time after I got home from the clinic. After that, it is painful, but this time it was not as bad as last year’s (BBL) procedure. The main difficulties I found were getting out of bed and using the bathroom. I did get some dizziness when I stood up for too long during the second to fourth days of recovery, but that could have been from the anesthesia.”

**The AEDITION**: *How were the results of each procedure?* 

**Naomi**: “The results from both procedures were initially very similar. The volume increase was similar – I had shown my plastic surgeon photos of the results of the first procedure before deciding on the size and shape of the implant for the second. The biggest difference is the longevity. A year after the BBL procedure, the results had more or less disappeared, but I had my implant surgery over a year ago and the results are still the same. I am so happy to know that these results will last for the foreseeable future, it’s a big relief.”

**The AEDITION**: *Do you have any advice for patients considering having a buttock enhancement?* 

**Naomi**: “My main piece of advice, purely based on my experience, would be to seriously consider the longevity of the augmentation surgery. Aside from that, definitely have someone on hand to help you out during the first week or so after surgery. It’s a pretty inconvenient recovery process and having someone there to help with basic tasks made a big difference for me. Mine gave me a recovery schedule to follow detailing what I could start doing week by week.”

**Josie**: “I was considering both procedures, but I also wanted liposuction. I discussed options with my surgeon and after weighing them all, I decided to go with the BBL. It just made more sense for me and I’m really pleased with the decision I made.”

**Josie**: “The first couple of days were painful, but after the fourth day things got better really quickly. It was great because I got to see results pretty much straight away. There was swelling initially which emphasized the results, but once the swelling had gone down, my butt was the perfect shape. The only downside was that my job involved a lot of sitting so I had to get up regularly. It was an issue for ten days or so after I went back to work. After about a month, I was back to normal.”

**Josie**: “I had my initial procedure seven years ago and had revision surgery four years later. I knew to expect potential revision surgery, so it didn’t come as a surprise. I decided to have revision surgery because the initial lift effect had worn off a little bit and I wanted a boost. I had gained weight, so liposuction to graft the excess fat was very welcome! The second procedure tired me out more than the first one, but the recovery was pretty similar. I’m still happy with the results right now and don’t think I’ll be going in for another revision for a couple of years.”

**Josie**: “Yes! It has really boosted my self-esteem and made me feel younger. My body changed so much from having my kids, that I didn’t really feel like me anymore. And even though the procedures were quite painful in the few days after, it’s definitely been worth it for me. ”

A keen athlete, Laura tried every trick in the book to achieve the butt she wanted by working out but didn’t have much luck. “I had tried to achieve my perfect body through exercise, but I just couldn’t get my butt to look how I wanted it," she says. It was the one area of her body that she wasn’t happy with, so she decided to look into getting surgery. "I did my research and found out that implants would probably be the best option for me, so I researched doctors near my hometown so I could stay with my parents while I recovered.” 

**The AEDITION**: *Could you talk us through the procedure itself and your first week post-surgery?* 

**Laura**: “I had my gluteal implant procedure as an outpatient, so I just went to the clinic on the morning of my surgery and came home right after it was done. When I got home I had to sleep on my front to avoid putting pressure on the buttocks area, but I wasn’t in much pain because of the drugs. The following day I had a call with one of the nurses at the clinic. I was doing ok and made sure to take the painkillers as instructed. During the first couple of days there was no way I would’ve missed a dose, it was pretty painful! Day by day it got easier. It was pretty restrictive initially and I definitely needed my mom there to help me with basic tasks, so I was happy I decided to have the surgery near my hometown.”

**The AEDITION**: *Do you have any tips for people who are going to have the procedure?*

**Laura**: “Find a board certified plastic surgeon you completely trust and do your research about the clinic. See if you can get a personal referral from someone you know. Follow your surgeon’s patient care instructions to the letter and expect discomfort. It’s annoying to have to adapt your routine right after the surgery but keep the results in mind when you’re uncomfortable in those first few days.”

**The AEDITION**: *How did the experience differ from what you expected?* 

**Laura**: “I underestimated how much I sit down! The buttock area is a pretty inconvenient part of your body to have surgery on, but once you get used to doing things in a different way, it’s not so bad. I was able to drive the five-hour drive home after a week, but I had to stop every half hour to get out and walk around. Still, I think the most surprising thing has been how realistic the final results look and feel!”

We also spoke to Beverly Hills board certified plastic surgeon Ryan Stanton, MD, who specializes in buttock implants, to find out more about butt augmentation procedures and what to expect from recovery. 

**The AEDITION**: *Are both fat transfer and implant procedures viable for most patients?* 

**Dr. Stanton**: “Technically both options are available but relatively few patients are truly good candidates for the BBL compared to buttock and cosmetic hip implants. I have performed buttock implants on all types of patients – skinny, lean, muscular, medium, obese, young, and old – and this cannot be said about BBL.”

**The AEDITION**: *How do you advise a patient to prepare their body for the procedure?* 

**Dr. Stanton**: “Like for any surgery, a healthy lifestyle with healthy nutrition (especially a high protein diet), mental preparation, avoiding blood-thinning medications and herbal supplements, and not smoking are optimal for health and a smooth recovery after surgery.”

**The AEDITION**: *Could you outline the recovery process for butt augmentation procedures?*

**Dr. Stanton**: “Keep in mind that every patient is unique and has their own unique experience. That being said, here is the most typical recovery process: The first two weeks after surgery is the most challenging with swelling, tightness, and discomfort. Several different types of pain and anti-inflammatory medications are prescribed. Icing around the clock is also extremely helpful. Sitting is prohibited for these two weeks, except for 10 to 15 minutes for eating or using the restroom. Patients that have traveled long distances (to get the operation) may fly back home after only five days by following a strict sitting/pressure release routine. The majority of patients are most comfortable laying on their tummy for the first two weeks, but it is possible to place yourself into a fairly comfortable position on your back with your knees and ankles elevated thus transferring some of your weight from the buttocks to the mid-back region. With buttock and hip implants, sleeping on the side is prohibited for three weeks. 

Patients may return to work after two to three weeks as sitting and basic daily activities become easier. For those who work from home, return to work resumes much sooner if they can work standing, kneeling, or reclining. After two weeks patients may sit for up to 30 minutes at a time, then stand or take a short walk for at least 15 to 30 seconds before sitting back down, after three weeks for up to an hour, and at four weeks unlimited time. At four weeks patients can resume upper body exercises while standing only. By six weeks, all restrictions are lifted. Exercise (including squats and lunges) and sports may be resumed but at low intensity, gradually building week by week to full strength in about another six weeks.

**The AEDITION**: *Are there any revision surgeries to be expected for implant procedures?* 

**Dr. Stanton**: “Because buttock and cosmetic hip implants are made of soft semi-solid silicone rubber, not gel-like breast implants, they cannot rupture and leak and so are considered permanent. Buttock or hip implant patients may eventually decide to upsize or, rarely, downsize their implants, just like with breast implants.”

**The AEDITION**: *What are the potential risks associated with this particular procedure?*

**Dr. Stanton**: “If performed by a buttock implant specialist, buttock implants are no more dangerous than breast implants. In my experience and as studies have shown, the risks and potential complications of silicone implants are very similar to breast implants: approximately one percent risk of infection, approximately two percent risk of wound healing complications, approximately one percent risk of bleeding or fluid collections. Due to postoperative swelling, patients commonly have temporary indirect sciatica symptoms for days to weeks after surgery. (I have never damaged any patient’s sciatic nerve in about 1,000 cases.) While breast implants have a nearly 20 percent risk of hardening from excessive scar tissue formation surrounding the implant (called capsular contracture), in my experience buttock implants have only approximately two percent risk of this. Also, because buttock implants are made of soft semi-solid silicone rubber and do not have a silicone shell containing liquid, as breast implants do, they cannot rupture or leak. Therefore, they are considered a permanent implant that never have to be changed at certain intervals, unlike breast implants.”
