About Winnie M. Tong, MD

I am interested in enhancing personal appearances and transforming lives using surgical experience gained over years of education and practice. I come to my current practice with a solid history of medical knowledge. I completed a categorical general surgery residency and pursued a fellowship in laparoscopic surgery before deciding to pursue plastic surgery. I completed my plastic surgery training at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill while also providing guidance and leadership to residents. Prior experience at a large surgery center gave me an understanding of how reconstructive surgery can help improve people’s lives. I also trained at MD Anderson under the guidance of world recognized leaders in microsurgery. MD Anderson provided the opportunity to further practice microsurgery skills and to develop the skills needed to manage complex reconstruction cases after oncologic resection. My training and experience helped me gain better perspectives on solving surgical problems and enhanced my ability to perform under pressure. I have developed a very meticulous approach to problem-solving that is directed toward a good outcome for the patient. My passion for breast and trunk reconstruction, microsurgery, and aesthetic surgery is fueled by a deep-seated desire to make the world a better place by improving people’s lives. I perform surgeries and participate in the care of transgender patients. I enjoy the collaboration with colleagues on how to address medical problems and provide the best care for patients. I have been involved in research projects on various topics including abdominal wall reconstruction and microsurgery, which resulted in publications in peer-reviewed journals. I am also involved in national organizations because I believe in giving time and effort to improve the progress of plastic surgery residents.
