About Urmen Desai

Dr. Desai has had an impressive journey to become a Plastic Surgeon. He was born and raised in a suburb outside Boston in Newton, Massachusetts. While in high school, he was involved in pre-college coursework at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before completing his undergraduate education with Honors in Neuroscience in New York. During one summer in college, Dr. Desai worked at Harvard Medical School-Massachusetts General Hospital. The following summer, he was selected among a highly competitive pool of applicants for a summer research program at NASA in Cape Canaveral, Florida. After graduating from college, Dr. Desai travelled to India to work for the World Health Organization (WHO) in New Delhi. He returned to Boston where he studied Art at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He remained in Boston where he received a graduate degree (MPH) in Health Policy from Harvard University while simultaneously pursuing his medical degree (MD) from Tufts University School of Medicine. Initially, Dr. Desai was on a course to become a Neurosurgeon, after spending a summer in medical school in the Department of Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School-Massachusetts General Hospital. However, his experience as a medical student participating in a cleft-lip and cleft-palate reconstruction mission project treating children born with congenital malformations in China let him to the field of Plastic Surgery. He went on to complete his surgical internship in General Surgery, followed by a rigorous surgical residency training program rotating between Brown Medical School, Children’s Hospital Boston - Harvard Medical School and Tufts Medical Center. During residency, Dr. Desai was active in research in the department of Plastic Surgery at Children’s Hospital – Harvard Medical School in Boston studying congenital deformities in children and applications in Craniofacial Surgery. He went on to complete a second residency in Plastic Surgery at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. Dr. Desai was also selected for the coveted fellowship in Advanced Aesthetic Plastic Surgery at the Beverly Hills Institute of Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, California. Dr. Desai has always been dedicated to academic research in Plastic Surgery.
