About Nnenna G. Agim, MD

Dr. Nnenna Agim directs the Division of Dermatology at Children’s Health℠, where she and her colleagues treat everything from common disorders such as acne and eczema, to emergent, rare and complicated disorders of the skin, nails and hair. “Pediatric dermatology can be a great challenge. Some skin conditions that affect children also affect adults but in a different way. Other conditions only affect children,” says Dr. Agim, who is also an assistant professor of dermatology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. “The way we diagnose and treat each child not only makes a difference to the child, but also to the family. That’s a major motivator.” Dr. Agim and her team are a rare breed: There are fewer than 300 physicians in the nation practicing this subspecialty in dermatology. Considering that one of every four pediatric office visits are prompted by a childhood skin condition, the dermatology division at Children’s Medical Center has a constant stream of referrals from primary providers, providing comprehensive diagnostic, consultative and treatment services. “There are many types of skin conditions that affect a child that family physicians or pediatricians are not necessarily familiar with, which makes our expertise in pediatric dermatology critical,” she says. Dr. Agim, who grew up in Nigeria, originally planned to be an architect. But two particular influences guided her toward pediatric dermatology. “A great biology textbook won me over toward medical school,” she said. “Dermatology was my dream goal once I was introduced to it in medical school. Then a rotation in pediatric dermatology with an inspiring mentor led me to my career.” Dr. Agim is certified by the American Board of Dermatology in dermatology and pediatric dermatology. She earned her medical degree from UT Southwestern. She completed her internal medicine internship and dermatology residency at UT Southwestern and a fellowship in pediatric dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine.
