About Kelly S. Keefe, MD

Dr. Kelly S. Keefe has been providing the finest ophthalmological care to the San Diego community for 21 years. She is dedicated to keeping her patients' eyes heathy and their vision as sharp as possible. Her areas of expertise in eye care include cataract surgery, oculoplastics surgery, ocular tumors, and comprehensive ophthalmology (treating glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, dry eye, etc.). A retired United States Navy Captain after 26 years of active duty service, Dr. Keefe received her Doctor of Medicine from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1985. She completed an Internal Medicine internship at Naval Hospital, Bethesda, completed her Ophthalmology residency at Naval Medical Center, San Diego, and completed her Ophthalmic Pathology fellowship at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C. Dr. Keefe has held faculty positions and academic appointments at multiple training hospitals including: Loma Linda University Medical Center; Naval Hospital, San Diego; University of Texas, San Antonio Health Sciences Center; Naval Hospital, Bethesda; Brooke Army Medical Center; and Wilford Hall Air Force Hospital. She is also a nationally-recognized speaker and educator in Ophthalmic Pathology and has been an annual invited speaker and instructor for various board reviews and national courses. Dr. Keefe also currently serves as a consultant for eye pathology cases at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Dr. Keefe is also an educator in third-world ophthalmology practices and has conducted annual humanitarian medical missions to Guatemala with HELPS International for over 12 years, restoring vision in the setting of advanced cataracts. Her other volunteer work consists of helping San Diego City Schools Nurses' Vision Program, caring monthly for school-age children with financial need and vision needs. Dr. Kelly Keefe is a member of the Scripps Mercy Physicians Medical Group, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Association of the Ophthalmic Pathologists, the Society of Military Ophthalmologists, the Theobald Ophthalmic Pathology Society, the Hogan Ophthalmic Pathology Society, the San Diego County Eye Society, and the San Diego Eye Bank. When she is not practicing, Dr. Keefe enjoys gourmet cooking, gardening, and caring for her multiple pets. Her husband, Michael Keefe, M.D., is also a surgeon, specializing in ENT/Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery with a Facial Plastics & Reconstruction subspecialty, practicing at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group in San Diego.
