About James D. Whalen, MD

Dr. James Whalen earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry with high honors and received his medical degree magna cum laude at the University of Louisville. He stayed in his hometown of Louisville completing his internship in a combined program of medicine and pediatrics and a research fellowship in wound healing at the Price Institute. After completing his dermatology residency and Mohs micrographic surgery fellowship at Brown University, he started the dermatologic surgery and Mohs micrographic surgery fellowship at UConn Health. Prior to co-founding Central Connecticut Dermatology, Dr. Whalen served the University of Connecticut as a Professor of dermatology, vice chair of the department of dermatology, director of dermatologic surgery, director of Mohs micrographic surgery, director of dermatologic surgery section of the dermatology residency, director of the micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology fellowship. He has published in peer reviewed journals and served in all roles in the Connecticut Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery Society including President. He is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology and a fellow of both the American Academy of Dermatology and the American College of Mohs Surgery. Dr. Whalen’s specialty is caring for patients with skin cancer, particularly with Mohs micrographic surgery. Born in the warm climate of Miami, FL, Dr. Whalen soon moved to Louisville, KY where he lived until finishing his early educational career. His training brought him to the northeast, settling in the southern-most state of New England where he began his Mohs microsurgery dermatology practice. He strives for excellent skin cancer cure rates and is genuinely motivated by the ability to restore function and appearance post-surgery for his patients. In his downtime, Dr. Whalen enjoys learning new things, travel, home and landscaping projects, admiring nature and playing golf. He loves to spend time with his family.
