About Erik S. Marques, MD

Dr. Erik Marques is an Associate Professor of Surgery and Program Director for the plastic surgery training program in the Division of Plastic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). As a proud New Jersey native, he often longs for the comforts of home including a great slice of pizza and a tasty bagel. Dr. Marques has been a member of the Division of Plastic Surgery since joining the faculty in 2002 immediately after completing his hand and microsurgery fellowship at Yale. He was appointed residency program director in 2013 by the former Division Chief and mentor, Dr. Donald H. Parks. Dr. Marques is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and holds additional APBS subspecialty certification in surgery of the hand. He is a member of numerous local, regional, and national professional organizations including the Houston Society of Plastic Surgeons (Past President), Texas Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, American Association for Hand Surgery, and the American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Marques is passionate about resident education. He has participated in the training of over 75 plastic surgery residents which includes not only trainees from his home program at UTH, but also rotating residents from The Methodist Hospital in Houston plastic surgery training program. He derives a tremendous amount of professional satisfaction working with residents and instilling confidence, encouraging autonomous decision-making, and guiding them through complex reconstructions in preparing them for the independent practice of plastic surgery. Over the course of his career at Hermann Hospital, he has performed thousands of specialized procedures to restore/salvage function of the traumatized hand and upper extremity with a special interest in replantation, revascularization, and complex soft tissue coverage. In addition, he brings his expertise to the underserved community at the Harris County Hospital District where he now devotes most of his clinical time. His wife, Dr. Minsue Chen, is a skilled dermatologist/Mohs surgeon. When she is not curing skin cancer, she can usually be found at the ice rink pursuing her true passion, ice hockey. In addition to being a devoted husband, Dr. Marques is the proud father of 2 cats, Wasabi and Ginga.
