About Amy S. Ranger, MD

Dr. Ranger was born and raised in metropolitan Detroit, the youngest of seven children. Graduating with a 4.0 GPA from Our Lady of Mercy High School in Farmington Hills, she studied Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering at the University of Michigan. Dr. Ranger attended University of Michigan Medical School from 1991-1995 and spent the summer of 1992 at Northwestern University with a team of biomechanical engineers and orthopedic surgeons, implementing CAD robotics to guide total knee replacement surgery. During a medical school research rotation, a fascinating project at the Henry Ford Hospital, in which she studied the effects of nitric oxide on intraocular pressures, finalized her decision to become an ophthalmologist rather than an orthopedic surgeon. She completed her internship and ophthalmology residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. Having a particular interest in oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery, she published papers and presented her research in Endoscopic Dacryocystorhinostomy at state and national meetings. Before moving to Traverse City, she spent one year in New Orleans developing a refractive surgery practice for an established ophthalmology group. In 2000, Dr. Ranger began a private practice in Traverse City joining the medical staff at Munson Medical Center. Along with general ophthalmology, Dr. Ranger focuses on oculoplastic and eyelid surgery, Botox, cataract and refractive surgery, as well as medical diseases of the eye, including diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and dry eye. After work, Dr. Ranger spends time with her children, Max, Emma and Isabelle, and her husband, Dr. William Ranger. She enjoys the outdoors, recreational sports and supporting any extracurricular activity in which her children participate (dance, soccer, ski racing, trumpet, piano, violin). Having spent a summer in Mexico as an exchange student, she speaks Spanish fluently and loves to travel internationally.
