At this point, we’ve all heard about the injectable weight loss craze, but these medications were initially intended for the medical management of type 2 diabetes by healthcare providers. Glucagon-like peptide-1 inhibitors are injectable medications administered into subcutaneous (fat) tissue to alter blood glucose, change insulin secretion, slow gastric emptying, and increase satiety for weight management and also blood sugar control. In clinical trials these prescription drugs have also shown reduced body mass index when compared to placebo.
Ozempic (by Novo Nordisk) is food and drug administration approved to treat patients with type 2 diabetes. Ozempic, which is the brand name for the GLP-1 receptor agonist semaglutide, is also marketed as Wegovy for weight management in those with BMI measurements in the overweight or obesity category.

- Simple blood tests to check blood sugar and kidney function.

Before Treatement

- Ozempic is injected into subcutaneous skin once a week.

- Patients should expect mild discomfort at the injection site that resolves quickly.

Immediately After Treatment

- The first 24 to 48 hours after an injection may cause more significant nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea in some patients.

1 to 2 Days After Treatment

- Blood glucose control will evolve over time
- There are not yet clear controlled trials on long term use of these medications 
- Some patients who have stopped taking Ozempic injections have shown weight gain above and beyond what was lost during treatment
