Dysport®

Dysport® by Medicis Pharmaceuticals is a slightly less potent formulation of cosmetic botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) than Botox® by Allergan. Composed of abotulinumtoxinA, the protective proteins unique to the Dysport® formulation make its molecular weight slightly lower than that of Botox®. Due to this slightly less heavy and potent formulation, Dysport® is ideal for treating larger areas of concern such as the forehead. 

Dysport® is composed of human albumin (a protein), lactose, and cow’s milk. Some individuals with dairy allergies, therefore, may not be suitable for Dysport® injections. Dysport® is also shown to have slightly faster noticeable results when compared to Botox®, however, it also generally does not last as long.

Botulinum toxin type A (and all of its specially formulated offshoots like Botox®, Jueveau®, and Xeomin®) generally functions by inhibiting cell transmissions between nerve and muscle cells causing a flaccid paralysis. These are temporary results as the body will naturally degrade the toxin over time.

- Typically, only a few considerations need to be taken prior to treatment
- There are no medication contraindications to receiving neurotoxin injections, but aspirin and supplements like fish oil, ginseng, garlic, and ginkgo biloba (to name a few) can increase a patient’s chance of bleeding and, therefore, bruising
- Exercise prior to treatment, as you'll need to stay upright (read: not lay down or bend over) for about three hours after being injected

Before Treatment

- Topical local anesthetic applied to site of injection
- Injections are made in predetermined areas

During Treatment

- Minimal redness at injection sites
- Ice and/or cold compresses to reduce redness, swelling, and tenderness

Immediately After Treatment

- Avoid touching or excessive movement of the treated area 
- Normal activities can be resumed (sometimes limitations on strenuous activity may be needed)
- Sleep in an elevated position

24 Hours After Treatment

- Initial results visible in three to five days, with full results in two weeks
- Neurotoxin injections usually last three to four months
