Acne Scar Treatment: Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers, while commonly thought of for their applications in wrinkle reduction or lip plumping, can also be used to treat certain types of acne scarring. Rolling scars, which are wave like depressions in the skin, as well as some boxcar scars, which are circular and deep indentations, can both be treated with fillers with great improvement. Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane are commonly used in this application. Significant scarring that doesn't respond well to fillers may better benefit from subcision.

Treatment with dermal fillers will begin by thoroughly cleansing the skin and determining which scars will be filled. The amount of filler used will vary and depend on the number of scars being treated and the severity of the scars. The type of filler will depend on the recommendation by your provider. A needle will then be inserted underneath the scarred area and the filler deposited until all scars have been treated.

Before Treatment

Results are typically visible immediately after treatment. Treated areas may be red and swollen. Treatment should not affect ability to work unless profession requires strenuous activity which should be avoided for 24 hours. 

Immediately After Treatment

Results will continue to improve as natural collagen production is increased. Skin will appear more smooth and even.

1-4 Months After Treatment

Maintenance treatments are typically necessary and are performed at 6 month increments or as needed depending on the filler used.
